Ah, the memories. This is were I grew up. I'm considering moving back just because of the railfanning. My father (RIP) used take me to this yard all the time, especially around the time this video was filmed. The gentleman singing the song at 3:49 is Al Dana, the narrator. I found reference of the song in Google but still can't find the actual recording to download in I-Tunes.
The BN is the largest user of diesel fuel in the US behind the US Navy. This is going to change. Warren Buffet just bought the BN and his also owns Northern Natural Gas whose natural gas pipeline runs right along the BN line. For over 25 years the BN and NNG have been cooperating on running locomotives on conpressed natural gas. Very clean, efficient with less mechanical problems.
@exenrontexas The BN doesn't exist anymore. They merged with ATSF back in the early 1990's. He bought the BNSF railway fromerly the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. He also owns Xtra, a major trucking and trailer company.
@WesBNSF Old names die hard. I rode a BN taconite train from Minneapolis to Duluth. It had been running on Compressed Natural Gas for over a year and had better fuel and maintenance records than diesel. Buffett now owns both the fuel source and the end user.
Did You notice, except for brief shots, how careful they were to keep the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, CB&Q,SP&S loco's, that were so numerous back then, out of the production??
The old heads are hard to work with now, can`t imagine working with them at this time, well guess I could`ve worked with some of these guys. A guy I worked with hired out on the Great Northern back in 1969 and just retired December 2006. Awesome flash back to BN long before BNSF.
Back then, it probably wasn't as back then the racks were wide open. Later in the 70's, they added side panels which then lead to the enclosed racks we have today. Sometime in the evolution of the autoracks, it was probably figured that humping the racks with new vehicles wasn't probably a good idea for smooth handling of the loads.
ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD THE SONG AT 3:49??!!!!

Yes! But I don't know if it would be funny. There's a lot of shots with just trains moving.

The Leslie S3K air horn at the beginning of the video was a BN trademark, and a real jewel.

Yeah it probably was pretty hard, those were the ''rainbow years''. I didnt see any Alco's either.
hallsflat 4 years ago 4
The Only Alco's that was recieved during the Merger was from SP&S. And most ended up scrapped or on switcher duty.

Excellent addition to the BN series. Hump yard activity is amazing. The 1970's documentery style brings back memories too.

Holly cow, they were humping loaded auto racks. I thought that was a HUGE no no!
