Notch hasn't yet fixed all the ladder glitches. If you use a water ladder, with one ladder for every two blocks, you will still move up like a regular ladder and also with almost the same speed as the original speed of moving up a water ladder before the 1.5 update. Now, its a fraction of a bit slower.

@zombadude They are not doggies 1st of all They are wolves... and to get them you have to find them like you have to find pigs, cows, etc. To tame them you must have 2 bones with you... have thouse bones out and right click on the wolf and it gets a collar... you will also see at least 5 hearts fly out of it... thats when you know its tamed... Does that answer your question?

the only reason i ever used missing pieces on ladders had nothing to do with conserving wood. i enjoyed placing my "hidden paths" directly above door entrances. jump and grab the bottom section and pull yourself into the room above. Apparently he moved the "grip" from the face block area to the leg block area.

Regarding the new ladders, you can also hold shift on them to stay stationary, so you can like hang off a ladder and mine, or add ladders below you.

Ladders cannot be placed on glass, glass is transparent and will let you view objects and terrain behind the block. Use that information and make a conclusion.
