Yeah, I'm sure nearly a million of us* would be watching this on YouTube almost a decade later if it had been a bland, forgettable commercial about sending data. And I'm sure such a classic, well-remembered commercial doesn't look as good on a resume as something everyone ignored when it aired.
*if you put the views of all the copies of this same ad on YT together.
ok mr. i know everything about marketing, they tell you what they do, they gather information and send it where you want..hince herding cats, they're just trying to make it funny
I love this commercial, my second fav, only Nozulla is funnier. The odd thing is that most people I ask remember this commercial but can't recall what company it was for. Too bad EDS spent millions to run it during a Superbowl, huh?
Um... are you for real? This is CGI. There were probably 4-5 cats that were near horses, and those are shots where the cat is being carried by a person. You can bet they were trained cats being handled by trained people on trained horses. The thousands of cats on the open plains are actually something like 30 cats shot on a sound stage, and then digitally composited A LOT. Isn't that obvious?
Of course there werent all these cats beign chased by hroses on the wide open plains but at some point there has to have been acouple of cats near a horse, or a couple of cats ona wide open space, in either case they could run away or get hurt.
It's terrific -- especially for one who frequently uses the expression. But, is anyone else having trouble with the sound?

That's amazing! How do they control all of 'em? There's so many!!!

The ad is memorable and funny due to the CATS and the imagery associated with cowboys and cattle herding, not EDS and their products/services.
Everyone who saw that Superbowl remembers,"Oh yeah, the cat ad, it was great!" See how many people remember EDS.
I stand by my previous comments without amendment.

I remember EDS because I use to work in one of their call center slave-pits.
Worst job I have ever had.

What we do.
Who we are.
Once does not need to have interned at Saatchi & Saatchi to know this much you daft insipid jackass.
If you charge enough, it has to be important.
If it's not what the client wants, then making the shit gratis won't make them any happier or likely to give a referral.
If the product sells itself, get out of the way in 30 seconds or less.
Keep the script short, the text large and the talent twice as hot. If you have to explain it to your audience, then it's not funny.

Great ad... huge problem, wtf is the product and wtf is EDS?
At the time this was Ross Perot's company, I think.
(The cats crossing the "water" was actually a small hot tub shoot that was added in seamlessly.)
Great no so many levels.
Crappy in that it does nothing to promote or sell the EDS services and brand.
Marketing 101 people: If the client is willing to pay, any kind of ad is "great!"
