I've always thought this was one of the most boring songs I've ever heard. I haven't played int years but it looks as though I'm going to get stuck playing it again. I can probably play it in my sleep, or at least I hope so, because sleeping in the only way I can get through this song. The music of the mid 60's was fantastic. It was doesn't disco that drove the music off a cliff. The music had already been killed by the guitar gods like Clapton and Hendrix.
That second solo break is beyond description. Clapton has always struggled with allowing himself to let go...to go for it. I heard a fairly recent interview with Jeff Beck and Clapton. Beck described himself as a risk taker and Clapton said he was quite the opposite. In my opinion, his best playing has been in those times when he was driven in the moment by great players i.e. Bruce, Baker, Allman, to name a few. The dynamics caused him to let go and play instead of over thinking.
It's the bass that makes this song. The lead guitar and the drums are awesome, totes obvi. But it's the bass, quiet and insistent and subtle that provides the rock solid yet flexible spine that holds this song together, enriches the sound, gives it depth and keeps it from getting too shrill and noisy. Without the rich and low tones of the bass, this song would be a little painful to listen to. It would be too high-pitched and very two dimensional. The bassist here is doing the best job of all.
This is live....flawless...1 in a 1000 when compared to other live cuts. Listen to Stairway live....guitars out of tune.....Spoonful live is another amazing cut...They weren't kidding....
Oops! my bad--didn't notice the quotation marks! And if I had had my trusty sidekick here, he could have told me it was Eric Clapton talking about the song and how he was (according to himself) "f***ing wrong". (I would call it a serendipitous moment, 'cause it worked perfectly) Hey, blame it on Ginger Baker if you want, for coming in late with the cops on his tail, but I think it was just meant to come out that way. Again, we should all play with our heart and not always our head. Peace!
“I've always had Crossroads held up as one of the great landmarks of guitar playing, but most of that solo is on the wrong beat. Instead of playing on the two and four, I'm playing on the one and three and thinking, 'that's the off beat.' No wonder people think it's so good-because it's wrong!"
@gahzeyboe noooo, eric clapton did not mess up, period. (except for getting hooked on substances for a while) but he is playing on the back beat on purpose. It's called "soul", and you should try playing with your heart instead of analyzing everything and trying to make it perfect. It will set your music free...

The song has a real thick southern flavor. Cream did a great job in remaking the song; although the original blues singer of this song is the real lyrical master of this masterpiece.
This song came out in approximately 1968; the year that I was born. For some reason, everytime I hear or think about this song (I love this song), it reminds me of Paul (Bear) Bryant and the University of Alabama football team; and the south in general.
@WHITEMANDINGO actually rock and roll was derived from many more genres of song than just blues. It was created by blues, soul, country and western, and many more.
@WHITEMANDINGO Rock n roll had a baby, they named it rap. Sorry to say but it is true "all three are black man's music. But the white people have country.!!
Rock came from blues rather than soul. Everyone who ever picked up an electric guitar and played it well is influenced by people like Robert Johnson without even knowing it sometimes. You're right about rap, though, That has ties in the Mississippi Delta.
@ciaobellakate No i fully agree with you there about rock developing from the blues, i just believe that didn't necessarily make it black mans music, rock i think transcended such divisions
Why are people saying Robert Johnson WOULD be proud? He sould his soul to the devil and there's no proof he ever died including the fact that no one knows where he's burried. It's quite possible he's still alive and was granted immotallity by the devil.
@ReallyRottenLionel Except that the legend of a blues musician who sold his soul to the devil is actually about Tommy Johnson, not Robert Johnson. The two were simply confused over time due to having the same last name

This is one of the best live rock cuts of this era - Clapton's two leads are amazing. On Wheels of Fire, this song is followed by Spoonful which is the greatest rock\blues\jazz fusion song of this era, possibly of all time.
@trekkian88 If you want to post stupid shit like "inventing/perfecting" at least grow a set of balls and use your real name. You've got mine, I live in Sacramento, CA. Come and see me sometime, we won't be talking, you cowardly coon-ass piece of shit. I might even buy your plane ticket.
Robert Johnson was a blues singer/guitarist and wrote this song. Eric Clapton has called Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." to quote Wikipedia. Clapton has said many times "I am, essentially, a blues guitarist." I guess that settles it.
@KENZOWAL - well, not quite. This is white-guy blues as imagined by British Invasion musicians. It's a great, great track - but it's rock all the way. It may be what commercial "blues" has become - as marketed by recording companies - but if you listen to Robert Johnson, you're not going to hear too much in common with this style of music.
@sensei48 You are correct, but this version still uses many blues elements, albeit with a more rock-oriented attitude. Robert Johnson's version, as you said, is more of a "true blues" song, but you have to admit, this song is fun as hell to listen to!
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is particularly keen on this track.
Okay guys lets get this straight. All rock (100%) came from the blues, but of course different people have added new components to make the crap head bangy thing there is today. So this is real music.
"If I have rocked ever so harder, it's it because I have rocked on the shoulders of giants" Or something like that. Point being that rock music has roots and a LOT of it's roots stem from Delta blues. There are other influences but had those early artist and musicians not existed music would be very different today.
Thing is, back in those days, people played music because it meant something. It had soul. It was a great hobby to pass time. It was fun.
@FreddyGuy925 I love it when somebody makes a remark about the two top comments that manages to garner enough votes to displace one of said comments, so now I have no idea what it was in the first place.
@cosmicgorilla113 cream actually didn't write this song. this song was written by a man named Robert Johnson who many consider the greatest blues player..this song was written by him about how he sold his soul to the devil standing on the corner of a dirt road hence the name "crossroads"
yes but that doesnt mean that he created it. rock evolved from blues after many years the same way humans evolved from apes. without the species homoerectus humans wouldnt be here, but homoerectus didnt CREATE humans. get what i'm saying?
@Glassandcandy .....evolutionary theory doesn't say that humans evolved from apes. It says that they share a common ancestor :P I get what you're saying, however, and would like to add that Blues wasn't the only form of music that lead to Rock and Roll. Country and Western music was a big factor, as was Tin Pan Alley music. Blues was a big part of it, but Rock and Roll is more a combination of styles than a direct ancestor of any one type of music.
@Glassandcandy Human beings didn't evolve from apes, they have a common ancestor. There's a difference. Rock and other types of music also have a common ancestor; the blues.
Just some advice, read the origin of species next time you visit the library. Explains the basics of evolution inside and out. Also contradicts creationism with out contradicting god. its a good read.
@zeppelin1996 lol evolution crap, cus creationism makes a lot more logical sense. but you're right, this no place for such a debate. and thats what she said.
are u sure Humans came from apes and why apes don't produce Humans anymore? How can you prove this and what about GOD? GOD is the creator of Humans, OKAY?
The reason apes dont create humans today is because the ape your thinking of (orangatangs goriilas chipanzes etc) we're hardly even related to. Evolution has already been proven, if you do about 10 minutes of research you would know that. Also i dont happen to believe in god. What makes you so sure your god is the real god. There are plenty of other gods, what makes you so sure yours is the correct one? a book written over 2000 years ago?
How did I spell god incorrectly? Because i didn't capitalize it? That's not a spelling error buddy, it's a grammatical error. Also if you are going to criticize me for misspelling stuff, make sure you can spell correctly. Athesist? The word you are looking for is atheist. There's only supposed to be one S. Also, evolution doesn't contradict a belief in god. God still could have created the world and then created man through the process of evolution.
@Glassandcandy and the reason i probably mispelled so much is because i dont sit and read over every word on a freaking YouTube comment smarty pants...Are you one of those douchebags that just try to pick on 13 year olds to make yourself sound smarter btw??? WELL GO AWAY WITH THESE STUPID "EVOLUTION" BELIEFS IM AGAINST THEM im actually an excellent speller when it comes to school work to moronic nub
I criticized your spelling because you criticized me for misspelling god (which I didnt.). Do tell anybody that talks about there beliefs to go away because you don't believe them? When you see an islamic man, do you say "GO AWAY WITH THESE QUARAN BELIEFS I'M AGAINST THEM!" Or when you see someone who practices hinduism, do you say GO AWAY I'M AGAINST POLYTHEIST BELIEFS!
@TheAerosmith3 i don't know where you're from but here in America we're entitled to our own opinions and beliefs...so let the guy have his opinion, if he wants to state it ( I'm not really sure why, it's a video for Crossroads not a Darwinism forum but oh well), who cares? Let him. If it offends you, find another video. Who really cares? Are you ever going to see the guy in real life or anywhere other than a Youtube video? Unlikely. If you don't like it, ignore it. Live and let live man.
@TheAerosmith3 You neglected to punctuate ANYTHING and you misspelled nonsense. You also forgot to use any commas, and you didn't capitalize the first word of your sentence. I must ask you, sir. Are you high or just incredibly stupid?
@dcwitzke well we all have our own opinions and errors but just stuff that annoys me or just stupid ignorant stuff like all these comments are nonsence that shouldve never been started...Check my spelling on nonsence please? it doesnt look right...i like to learn from mistakes
@Glassandcandy dude i totally feelya, im in highskool n just tryin t figure things out. What i've come across is that different religions r th same stories told by different ppl. Obviously sumthin divine happened a long time ago, but diff ppl saw it, andretold th story in diff ways. But they all share th same principles
I've always thought this was one of the most boring songs I've ever heard. I haven't played int years but it looks as though I'm going to get stuck playing it again. @KENZOWAL - well, not quite. This is white-guy blues as imagined by British Invasion musicians. It's a great, great track - but it's rock all the way. It may be what commercial "blues" has become - as marketed by recording companies - but if you listen to Robert Johnson, you're not going to hear too much in common with this style of music.
sensei48 5 months ago 3
@sensei48 You are correct, but this version still uses many blues elements, albeit with a more rock-oriented attitude. Robert Johnson's version, as you said, is more of a "true blues" song, but you have to admit, this song is fun as hell to listen to!

@ThePondDogs - oh my, yes! One of my favorite cuts from the 60s, blues elements all over the place.

While we all recognize the greatness of EC on the guitar, dear God, listen to the runs of Jack Bruce on the bass! He's playing a second lead!

It was fun.
Today people just want to get rich.

@cosmicgorilla113 i love how this is the standard definition for robert johnson songs now. the media's job is done.
TheAniman5000 6 months ago
@cosmicgorilla113 cream actually didn't write this song. this song was written by a man named Robert Johnson who many consider the greatest blues player..this song was written by him about how he sold his soul to the devil standing on the corner of a dirt road hence the name "crossroads"

@Glassandcandy ROCK N ROLL CAME FROM BLUES!!! THREFORE IF BLUES WASN´T CREATED , ROCK WOULD NEVER EXIST
ROCKKERFAT 6 months ago 58
@ROCKKERFAT
yes but that doesnt mean that he created it. rock evolved from blues after many years the same way humans evolved from apes. without the species homoerectus humans wouldnt be here, but homoerectus didnt CREATE humans. get what i'm saying?
Glassandcandy 6 months ago 4
@Glassandcandy .....evolutionary theory doesn't say that humans evolved from apes. It says that they share a common ancestor :P I get what you're saying, however, and would like to add that Blues wasn't the only form of music that lead to Rock and Roll. Country and Western music was a big factor, as was Tin Pan Alley music. Blues was a big part of it, but Rock and Roll is more a combination of styles than a direct ancestor of any one type of music.

Go argue with your wife that is what mariage is for :p
S7E4L7H 6 months ago
@Glassandcandy Human beings didn't evolve from apes, they have a common ancestor. There's a difference. Rock and other types of music also have a common ancestor; the blues.

@Glassandcandy Humans evolving from apes? Hahaha, what a bunch of bull shit! I agree about the rock blues thing though.
zeppelin1996 5 months ago
@zeppelin1996
Just some advice, read the origin of species next time you visit the library. Explains the basics of evolution inside and out. Also contradicts creationism with out contradicting god. its a good read.
Glassandcandy 5 months ago
@Glassandcandy I don't believe in that evolution crap. But this is no place for a discussion like this so let's just enjoy some Cream!
zeppelin1996 5 months ago
@zeppelin1996 lol evolution crap, cus creationism makes a lot more logical sense. but you're right, this no place for such a debate. and thats what she said.
greensp4rk 5 months ago
@greensp4rk Well not everything has to make logical sense. And I knew that last part would be taken the wrong way. lol

are u sure Humans came from apes and why apes don't produce Humans anymore? How can you prove this and what about GOD? GOD is the creator of Humans, OKAY?
Anders1135 5 months ago
@Anders1135
Glassandcandy 5 months ago
@Glassandcandy how bout shutup spell God right and get off an amazing song with your stupid athesist nonsence
TheAerosmith3 5 months ago
@TheAerosmith3
Glassandcandy 5 months ago
@Glassandcandy and the reason i probably mispelled so much is because i dont sit and read over every word on a freaking YouTube comment smarty pants...Are you one of those douchebags that just try to pick on 13 year olds to make yourself sound smarter btw??? WELL GO AWAY WITH THESE STUPID "EVOLUTION" BELIEFS IM AGAINST THEM im actually an excellent speller when it comes to school work to moronic nub
TheAerosmith3 5 months ago
@TheAerosmith3
Glassandcandy 5 months ago
@TheAerosmith3 i don't know where you're from but here in America we're entitled to our own opinions and beliefs...so let the guy have his opinion, if he wants to state it ( I'm not really sure why, it's a video for Crossroads not a Darwinism forum but oh well), who cares? Let him. If it offends you, find another video. Who really cares? Are you ever going to see the guy in real life or anywhere other than a Youtube video? Unlikely. If you don't like it, ignore it. Live and let live man.

Glassandcandy 5 months ago 2
@TheAerosmith3 You neglected to punctuate ANYTHING and you misspelled nonsense. You also forgot to use any commas, and you didn't capitalize the first word of your sentence. I must ask you, sir. Are you high or just incredibly stupid?

@Glassandcandy No my rather sir of no nobleness I am human. I just have OCD with spelling some things YOU FREAKIN' MORON
