Yup, eastern coyotes can get pretty big. Unfortunately, in our neck of the woods, they prey on sheep. Even worse, their pups (who are raised on the mutton/sheep) grow up with a (genetic) propensity for eating them. Then livestock owners end up on the losing end. So, all that to say, if you've never seen sheep disembowelled by the (increasingly urbanized) eastern coyote.... well, I guess you haven't. I have no problem hunting them at all!

@pathfinderrob Sorry but this is just silly. If coyote pups grow up eating mutton, it's a learned (acquired) taste - NOT a genetic propensity. Eating mutton doesn't alter their genes. So it doesn't become a "genetic propensity" that they automatically pass to their offspring, solely by inheritance. Please learn a little science before you make "scientific sounding" claims.

It may have lost its leg, while a young pup, by a farmers sickle bar while cutting hay. I have actually witnessed this twice. A trap did not do this. A trap catches them by the foot,not the leg. Both animals I witnessed this on were red fox that made a full recovery and acted normal while coming in to my calls.

they are HUGE here in Northern Indiana! my guess with his leg (I've seen it with Dogs working in vets office) is ppl setting wire traps and regular traps.the animal gets caught and because of the pain chew their own legs off to try and stop the pain and get away.sadly not getting medical attention they will die from infections going in the blood stream.

I admire coyotes. They're basically very brainy, very adaptable wild dogs and they have really beautiful fur also. I know they prey on livestock and sometimes ranchers or farmers have to shoot them to protect their livlihood but I hate to see them killed. If you like dogs how can you not like coyotes?

Deer and small game hunters kill coyotes so there will be more game for them. Humans think they own all wild animals. They can't allow the coyotes to eat game because they think the game belongs to them. I'll tell you what......get a better hobby and leave all wildlife alone. I think if you don't eat them you are a thrill killer. You are a discrace. I hunt and I eat what I shoot. I was taught growing up if you aint going to eat it...Don't kill it. If I shot a dog,cayote,ect My grandpa would make me eat it. If I shot a skunk he would have probably made me eat it. Other creatures have a right to live. Coyotes have no other predator so it's up to the hunter to thin them out. If the coyote is left to over-populate then you my friend will have nothing to hunt, coyotes kill, rabbits, pheasant, fawns etc. No we are not thrill killers, we know what has to be done to manage the population so all animals can thrive.
