  • Pretty hilarious and educating. Don't know that I'm convinced by the ramble on steampunk. Either way, not speaking to 'Boys of My Youth' was disappointing. Eitherway, thanks for recommendations on the Non-Fi.

  • I agree with girlcrazyhorse! It is a wonderful piece of writing.

  • @roblespaty It's a fabulous piece of writing, and I certainly meant no disrespect in bringing it up in my video. Most of the reactions I've had re: nonfiction have been that it is "very serious" and I was merely trying to contrast a more serious book with something more light-hearted.

  • ....BTW It is EWINGS SARCOMA that Lucy Grealy had!!! not "Jaw Cancer" IF YOUR GOING TO TALK ABOUT A BOOK OR PERSON AT LEAST GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT Lucy was a great person and she battled hard and she didn't fight "Jaw Cancer" she fought EWINGS SARCOMA! You blow her off like she is nothing and her book wasn't "kind of sad" everything in her life was sad and unfortunate and I'm sure if you lived it you wouldn't have thought it was "kind of sad" you would be devastated. Give her more credit.

  • I really appreciate your passion for Lucy Grealy. It's been a really long time since I've read the book, though, and since I was doing this on the fly and from memory, I was sure to not get all my facts straight. (Plus I rather spontaneously brought up Lucy Grealy so I didn't really "prepare" myself for talking about her.)

Having said that, I met Lucy about eight years ago and was very inspired by her grace and kindness.

  • What steampunk should I start with? I've never read any, although I know what it is (ty to nano). Also - CNF is fun to write. (Creative non-fiction). Blur the details of your life, but base it there!

  • Surprisingly I haven't read a lot of steampunk. Right now I'm in the middle of a book called Mainspring by Jay Lake. I'm enjoying that one quite a bit.

You might consider starting with an anthology, though, to get a grip on the genre. I recommend one called Steampunk (edited by Ann & Jeff Vandermeer). The thing about steampunk is it's likely you've read something without knowing it. The genre is pretty wide. (Recently discussed that Firefly is very steampunky.)

  • Did you say FIREFLY? It's like you know just what button to push. :)

I'll look around for an anthology. I've actually been intrigued since I read about it at Nano. I'm not reading anything (besides Elle) so it's a good time to branch out. LOL

  • The last non-fiction book I read was all about the creation of the constitution... and that was incredibly dull and full of dates and facts. Informative, though.

  • Sooooo, do you like Steampunk then? =P

Also I LOVE non-fiction! Have you read Frank McCourt's books yet?

  • I SAY! Facts are for losers. Actual facts.

    GEARS 4 EVA.

WITH THE CUNNING USE OF FLAGS!

  • You have recced both those books to me when I visited you and I have read and enjoyed them!

Also, I haven't seen you in over four years. :(

Why do you live so far away?
