if the ship capsizes there is a high chance of cordite igniting as it is rolled about and if the safety procedures were not followed with regards to flash protection (often the case in wartime) then the exploding cordite can ignite the magazine completely.
there is quite clearly flames in this explosion, indicating an explosive or propellant (cordite), NOT a boiler explosion which would be a rapid expulsion of steam

I've always been amazed by the fact that over 300 of her crew survived. To look at this footage, you'd think that she went down with all hands, or close to it. I have been told that the reason so many survived was that the ship was not at battle stations when she was sunk, and that this was why so many lived through this disaster.
Looks like the boilers exploded from the cold seawater touching them. That would have been the first place to fill with water from a torpedo hit. Her final wake making a turn to port to slow the inrush of water. Being deep in the ship as she capsizes in those terrifying last seconds of life. Im guessing a number of those dots are actually Barhams sailors as well. You can really feel that explosion too, like you were standing underneath it yourself!
@HelmutVillam If the boilers can propel a 35,000 ton battleship at 25 knots I am quite positive a steam buildup in the engine room is what caused it. Cordite explosions are very bright as well. Most of the expolsive debris actually appears to be steam pressure escaping. More than enough pressure for the armored belt of a battleship.

According to Wikipedia, U-331 was sunk almost exactly one year later by a British plane. The captain and 15 men of the crew survived and ended as POWs.
Captain von Tiesenhausen died - age 87 - in August 2000 in Vancouver.
HMS Barham was one of "only" two ships that were sunk by U-331.

If the german torpedos weren't a joke at the beginning of the war, there would have been a lot more capital ships damaged or sunk by german submarines. Even Prien, a very experienced and capable commander, shot a complete salvo of 4+1 torpedos on the Royal Oak and not a single one did explode. So he has to reload his tubes in the Bay of Scapa Flow!
Barham wasn't a big loss for the Navy, Churchill wanted to use her as a blockade ship in 1940. The only real loss was the crew.

@lionel200000000 I think in the Hood's case it was because the Navy hadn't gotten around to replacing its wooden decking, so when the Bizmarcks shell hit it punched through the deck and into the magazine.
If that hadn't of happened it's thought the Hood probably would have won the battle as it had crossed the Bizmarcks bow.

@gotsda There are many theories as to what happened, but the initial thought that a shell from Bismark penetrated directly through the armoured deck is thought of as unlikely since the discovery of the wreck. A theory which I can believe is, one of Bismark shells, by a freak chance, fell directly down one of the aft magazine feed tunnels, which took the shells from the magazine up to the guns on a lift. Hence the massive instant explosion and loss of the ship.

@gotsda Sadly, not accurate. There have been some studies of the wrecks and they've found that the RN crews were leaving the blast doors open. It most likely was a secondary magazine that went. Having better horizontal protection most likely wouldn't have helped, but containing the flash fire would have definetly saved the ship. I too wish the outcome had been different.

There was no 720p or resolution. There was only film sharpness. You record an image on film and project it. The better the film, the larger you could make the projection and not see blurriness.
Getting 480p or 720p or any resolution from film is the result of someone scanning the film and making a computer file. The better the scanner, or the better format they decide to scan the film in = better resolution of your old fashioned video

My Grandad ,John McHugh,survived this (just) he was a loader in A Turret.The poor souls that you can see sliding down the hull of the ship met a gruesome fate, the hull was covered in barnacles which 'shredded' and lacerated the sailors.Von Tiesenhausen (U331 Kaptain) was the luckiest,most un-professional sailor ever to set sea..fortunately his luck ran out a year later whilst stalling for time to crash dive using a white flag..a Fairey Albacore torpedoed him .

@TheHorloge Yes, at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. It is still there as a war grave but visitors are not allowed. Locals say you can just see her dark outline under the surface. After the sinking avy frogmen reported finding bodies halfway out of the portholes where people had tried to get out. Horrible!

If you listen, the commentator tells you that the Aft Magazine blew up although the actual cause is unknown, it seems obvious the cause is the event of the torpedo thus the sinking but this doesn't explain the ignition and frankly, the importance of this clip is the poor chaps that lost their lives and their fellow ship mates who lost their mates. if the ship capsizes there is a high chance of cordite igniting as it is rolled about and if the safety procedures were not followed with regards to flash protection (often the case in wartime) then the exploding cordite can ignite the magazine completely.

I've always been amazed by the fact that over 300 of her crew survived. To look at this footage, you'd think that she went down with all hands, or close to it. I have been told that the reason so many survived was that the ship was not at battle stations when she was sunk, and that this was why so many lived through this disaster.

Looks like the boilers exploded from the cold seawater touching them. That would have been the first place to fill with water from a torpedo hit. Her final wake making a turn to port to slow the inrush of water. Being deep in the ship as she capsizes in those terrifying last seconds of life. Im guessing a number of those dots are actually Barhams sailors as well. You can really feel that explosion too, like you were standing underneath it yourself!

@HelmutVillam If the boilers can propel a 35,000 ton battleship at 25 knots I am quite positive a steam buildup in the engine room is what caused it. Cordite explosions are very bright as well. Most of the expolsive debris actually appears to be steam pressure escaping. More than enough pressure for the armored belt of a battleship.
