"When you walked into the room, never seen your face before... Won't follow you there anymore" the Trees. Thanks for making the NW so great back before all of these morons moved up here
i was at this show...i think they were opening for fIREHOSE or dinosaur. truly a transfiguration for me. lanegan has the best voice/lyrics on earth. pickerel's loss was when it all went awry. barrett martin is/was steady but too R-O-C-K. they started to sound like a bar band. also, gary lee switching from his firebird to a les paul changing their sound from punk to ROCK! yuck. at least lanegan still writes and records some truly wonderful music. hope he doesn't get stupid.
@immobilepreacher I know what you mean, but I think when i saw them the first time he had a black LP, but they still had "that sound", so maybe it's just a matter of attitude??
Well, Pickerel had his own style, that added to the others MADE the trees sound, just retro enough for psychedelia, but not dated by any measure. I was disappointed with his replacement being overly modern and not getting the psychedelic aspect of the trees.
@wanderlander this what i wish i'd written...the psych/punk they invented built on base of songs that were as musical as the beatles, just made me go bizots when i saw this show.
uh, no...pickeral was and is great too.two different styles...and he had plenty of energy. as i recall they were always tellin him not to speed things up too fast.
mark's beat was great for dancing, although not as technically dazzling as barrett. ...pickeral was also constantly throwing sticks up and catching them on beat. listen to the buzz factory album for perhaps his best drumming, or any Truly record.
At the time, one of the BEST bands live bar none... could burn the damn house down. Saw them when they opened for firehose on their first big tour. Just insanely great when they were ON. The Conner brothers were characters. Personally, I think they lost some of their innocence when they ditched Pickeral. I'll never forget that Cats Cradle Show in Chapel Hill... standing ovation wouldnt let Mike Watt and firehose hit that stage (and it was their FIRST time, too). Amazing.
ho-ly shit. this was the first trees song i ever heard (on cassette). even if and especially when, bleach and louder than love changed my life. i was 18 when i first saw them in '89 w/soundgarden. i can't remember shit from those days so thank you liveboots, thank you.

@blackyfloyd i agree. and technique aside Mark's a real nice fellow, too. they both are of course i know Mark better than i know Barrett.

Mark Pickerel was nothing compared to Barrett Martin. Mark Pickerel had no energy and used practically the same technique in every Trees song.

I'd kill for a Screaming Trees live show from '89/'91 in Seattle or Olympia.
And you should too.
Amsterdam74yeah 3 years ago 15
Yeah! You're so right!
TenenteDinamite 3 years ago 2
Screaming trees was the greatest band in the world at that time for me.
The crowd looks terrible.
I don't think
those people even knew them, they were there out of curiosity. And didn't even get the band. They didn't get the band at all.
I would pay $300 million for a show in Seattle or Olympia 1989/91.

then you would be wasting your money....
but yeah it would be great!!!
