Relatively progressive areas of the world when compared to the U.S., like Canada mentioned here, are a threat to Grover Norquist and the like-minded on the political right.

He would love to erect a wall around America and keep everyone inside it's protective walls while keeping different ideas out. That way, the masses stay dumb and continue to follow those who at least sound more informed, like him, and continue to vote against their own economic interests; like they've been doing.

He's a conservative lobbyist who has worked with/for the likes of Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich and George W. Bush. Similar to religion, his power and appeal derives from those who willingly give it to him from a grass-roots level upward, that he as cultivated into one of national political importance. To no surprise, he also gets grown adults in politics to sign onto childish pledges.

His positions are the classic ones of the political right: tax cuts, deregulation, and the NRA.
