Me and two friend got caught at the border with 1/4 of a kilo of Hashish that the driver did not tell us he had on him. Me and one other were facing charges of consumption and the driver with consumption,

possession and intent to sell/promote (10-25 years).

We spent 2 months in jail until the final hearing where we left innocent on 31/12/09 - The last people to be tried in the Uae for that decade.

The government is still holding my passport almost 3 months after the Judge found us innocent and after having a family member visit the jail to get back our passports (She had to put her's down as "insurance" while the Diwan, the Sheikh's office, was deciding weather to deport me or not) and although the Diwan had sent a paper a week ago saying that I would not be touched, they sent a different letter to the jail holding my passport. What that letter said, we do not know..

But the officers at the jail had been asking suspicious questions as to my whereabouts and had not handed over my passport.

Just to warn anyone living in the UAE, the laws here are shit, 1 year for pills, 4 years for anything else. The real jail time does not exceed 3-12 months but it can last 3 years if you do not get the pardon that comes twice a year. If you are not a local of the country you will get deported after you leave the jail. If you are a national you get 2 years of testing.

er no, the reason i turned down a job is because of the 'beyond' zero tolerance laws. I have never touched any kind of illegal drug and would even have no problem with not even drinking for several months. The fact is that many people arrested in dubai had trace amounts of drugs on them that you could easily get from shaking someones hands or brushing against someone. One guy convicted even had some in the tread of his shoe. everyone i asked told me to not take the risk of going there.

Every big holiday in the Muslim calendar all the possession and use cases get pardoned and everyone is deported. Most people like me, will do a max of half a year.
