Just found this today. Welcome to the very real (and often totally frustrating) world of fire starting. I've had to start a few fires using the magnesium block. NOT my favorite method. Most people aren't brave enough to show their initial failures. Thank you for showing everyone that it's not always as easy as it looks on Survivorman/Dual Survival/etc.
Look up a fire piston. always have a fire bundle on hand and a LARGE amount of kindling on hand to work with. set up your bundle and set up your fire before trying to start your fire. If you think you have enough kindling YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH.
-I like the fire piston because the fire piston is usable as long as it lasts! you just have to have some dry tender. Use an Altoids tin with a nail hole in it, fill with cotton balls and burn in fire. this makes "mini" charcloth pieces that burn well.
I dont use the blast match, but a hint on the mag stick. I like to have a nice tinder bundle ready to go, then collect my magnesium shavings on a seperate medium. It takes sufficient pressure to get good shavings, then place the tender on top of shavings, covering about half. Try to hold the blade still and pull the flint across it. This way you still get spark but dont disturb the delicate shavings or tender bundle. Great video tho. Glad to see your preppin.
this is just painful to watch in the begninning, but u made me smile all the same=) its good to see u didnt give up, thats the most important part in survival mode. it just goes to show it easy to watch, and hard(er) to do. many people think that if they know the theory of how its done, that they can do it.....untill they try it!But the arogant ones will only learn, when its too late! i bet u felt soooo good when u actualy made fire, and i can see how your technique was getting better'n'better
DEMCAD,.. your not suppose to use the sharp blade part of the knife to scrape the magnesium fire starter, use the other side of the knife!. and also you should consider a "ar7" and a hobo stove for your bug out bag!,. just suggestions,.
All you need is more fluffy material that has more surface area for the tinder and you're set to go. Bushcraftusa . Com has off great help for many people.
Well I have to say I give you a ot of credit for not giving up. The problem with the first try was some things in the wild dry and dead or not does not take a spark very well Bro. I will tell you one of the best things to keep in your bag would be dryer lent. It will take a spark the first try usally. Keep up with and thanks for the laugh and don't mean anything bad by that.
That is the funniest video i have watched all week! Ok though with the blast match, magnesium block and even the matches and lighter what your mistake was is that you didn't create whats called a tinder bundle things like dry grass, cotton like plants, cedar, burch bark and pine sap, or even lint from you pocket. There has to be alot of surface area to catch the spark thats why the paper went up and the grass and leaves did not. BIG A for the effort! Oh yea and becareful with the knife.
Thier was a guy that posted a video saying you could make a fire with the back of a pocket knife and flint I think it was. Wow, thought you're hair was on fire thier for a minute. Who knew making a fire could be so differcult
LOL! You get an "A" for effort, but you seriously need to pay closer attention to the
details in the videos you have been watching on this subject. You are not using any of these fire starting tools correctly. You are not scraping the magnesium with the knife correctly in the beginning and you just need to practice. There are many, many sources of fire kindling and it is not cheating to use them. Cotton balls and Vaseline, Jute twine, dryer lint, are a few to get you started. Good luck!
Hi, you should use the back lower part of your knife. Then with some force on it the sparkles will start the fire. I have those fire starters and they are very reliable. Also there are good videos on how to use them on these web page. Keep practicing you will do better. Good luck
Hey, I found your video when it was re posted on a forum. You should check out Bushcraftusa (dot) com. They have a ton of info on camping and wilderness skills.
Personally I am deeply proud of you to try and learn any new skill. Getting fire is never easy unless you try and learn the basics. Kudos to you - and if you would like some advice - please contact me - let's learn some more together. ;)
Personally I am deeply proud of you to try and learn any new skill. Getting fire is never easy unless you try and learn the basics. Kudos to you - and if you would like some advice - please contact me - let's learn some more together. ;)
ok that was entertaining...... for an instant light try a cotton ball with a little Vaseline on it Jute twine also works well. In the wild if you don't have these things try Lichen of dry mosses... the stuff that looks like black or green hair. good luck and stay warm!
The tinder is as important as the firesteel. I have tried using many different kinds of tinder. Cotton works the best. In the wilderness, if you don't have cotton, you can cut off a piece of your cotton clothing and use it as tinder. All you need is a tiny little piece. Put that cotton in the middle of a "bird nest" made of hay. One strike, and you will get fire!
I forgot to add heres a tip for getting fire from low to high.. take any candle and throw it onto the fire it will melt and get the firegoing alot faster then fire tinders stuff like that.. fire going out just throw it on works very well..
It is surprisingly hard to start a fire without the right preparation. I uses cotton balls with vaseline on them as my tinder. It lights easily with the tools you are using and it burns a surprisingly long time. It is also inert enough and easy to carry without accidentally igniting. Give it a try.
dont always need cotton just need time finding and gathering the right tinder.. also getting the fire off the ground helps alot.. fire is 3 things Heat Fuel Air you need all of them to make a fire heat is harder when its cold or when the ground is wet because is comes up and effects the fire so makeing a base to start the fire or even doing it in your hands helps..
Please show me were I said you "always need cotton" because as far as I know I didn't. I simply said that advance preparation can make the job a lot easier. If you are going to carry a fire starter it makes your life a lot easier to carry a little tinder too. At least I though my advice was more helpful than "fire needs heat fuel and air" No shit??? Thanks for the insight.
No matter what, u can't survive if you give up. U were pretty funny getting started and you were not sure of how to proceed, but you are not a quitter and you got the job done. We must first learn from our mistakes and failures in order to achieve success...you good sir were successful!!!
All you need is a little more preparation before actually sitting down and starting your fire. Save yourself a lot of frustration.
Take some of that toilet paper, maybe more of those twigs, some dried grass if possible and/or anything else you might find laying around and grind it up really fine with your hands. What you want to do is make a tight bundle that resembles a bird's nest so any ember you do make can spread easier.
Im glad to see you ended up getting it to work. It feels good to learn how to do something our ancestors learned over ten thousand years ago with nothing but sticks and rocks. I just taught myself how to make fire with a fire bow last year. It feels like you really accomplished something when you get it right. keep it up and have fun.
There are easier ways of starting a fire, even in damp and cold weather. If you would like to know more please leave a message on my freedom page bro.
5 stars man. Glad to see you practice this and figure out the short comings. Anyway, I carry three lighters, one in my ALICE pack, one in my LBE, and one in a pocket. I carry a magnesium for back up along with a bag of dryer lint. Soaking cotton balls in petroleum jelly is also an excellent help. You can save your TP too.
I have that same magnesium block (chain and all) and it will ruin a perfectly good blade. Like everybody else said, buy a bunch of Bics. It is however, fascinating to see the mag burn though, but for me it took a bic lighter after I got pissed to set it off. Very hot, but hard to spark to ignition in my experience.
A very good nartual tinder is bark from a Birch Tree. They are common in the woods in Michigan. The layers can be peeled to where it's actually thinner than paper.
You need tinder. How to make tinder. Take petroleum jelly and put it into an old pot you don't use much. Place on electric hot plate or electric stove on lowest setting. Melt petroleum jelly. Once melted, take large cotton balls and soak them in it. Use salad tongs or something to roll them around in the melted petroleum jelly. Take them out once soaked and put on paper plate to dry. Once plate is full, put in freezer to speed up cooling. Then place in zip loc bag and seal. One burns 8 mins.
the best way to learn is by trial and error...congrats...you have a leg up on a lot of B.O.B.ers that have never used their equipment...it does no good to have gear if you can't use it...vids like this are why i like you DEMCAD...you're not trying to be an "expert"...just the average guy trying to make a fire without a match....keep it...i like your usual vids and i especially like these survival and preparedness vids...keep em coming
A useful thing to carry for fire starting is cotton balls dipped in vaseline. I keep some in a small zip lock bag. A small medicine bottle would hold several of them also.
have you seen the film 'the edge' Reg? love that movie - my work sent me on a survival course in canada [fort mcmurray], it's not so easy to start a fire!
decad we would all starve with this one it is funny mate still a good vid i have still lerned o this one aswell as all your vids thanks man keep it up for life
the blastmach will lite anything with ease if it white like ....tissue......toilet paper..... napkins ........cotton........ you get the idea When you want to lite grass make a bird nest with the grass you want to set on fire then open a hole in the middle to put your magesium(I always put my magesium on a tree leaf to keep it off the ground) from there use your flint or bastmatch to lite the magesium and you have firer
Futureevent comments about my $20 GERBER fixed blade (non-serrated) knife i show in my vid (RAMBO BAGS PT2 ) he's got the same one and loves it .Wallymart $20 bucks man
Dem take that folder put it in your pocket. that's where it belongs, for every day use personally i don't like serrated for thier difficulty in sharpening take it from me 20 yrs wood working
go to the 99 cent store or dollar tree and you can pick up 4 bic lighters for a buck ..put about 4 or 5 or even 6 in your survival gear lighters are cheap why use a match blaster thing..you can put the lighters in a zip lock bag and there you go...
My sentements and philosophy exactly (shnozzel12) thats what i'm saying in my upcomming vid (FIRE TROUBLE) We are all gonna help eachouther out to become self reliant YEAH !!!
here is a tip if you want it. get a small camera film container put cotton balls that have been soaked in patrolium jelly. those make very fast fire starters. your strike force will start that up fast in nearly any weather condition.put a bunch of soaked cotton balls in it. i think Vaseline will work too
You need to use finer starting material. Try taking cedar bark and rolling it in your hands till it is fuzzy. It works pretty well. In my experience bow drill fires are easier, but that is only after many hundreds of hours of learning how to do it.
those thick, hard grass stems won't ever light with firesteel. you need thin or shredded grass. the finer the fibers, the better chance you have. in your firestarting kit you should have as many lighters as you can afford/cary, a firesteel, and a small magnifying glass.
A small Fresnel lens is what you need. They make them in wallet size that would easily light that stuff. Then there is the big 8.5x11 ones that can light a stick on fire in a couple seconds.
Only use the blade on the magnesium side of the block, and the Back of the blade for the sparker, I've started fire with it in windy misty conditions (pine).
5 stars for having the guts to do the video.reminds me of Jack London's great short story "To Build a Fire" all you needed to best the video was a tree overhead loaded with snow or maybe a forest fire lol
Take 25 large cotton balls place in a 1 gal ziplock plastic bag, add three tablespoons of petroleium jelly, zip bag close and squish the jelly into the cotton balls. Keep coated cotton balls in a plastic bag until needed. Use any sparking device to ignite. One cotton ball remains lit for 5 minutes and it lits the first time! Hope this helps your preps. Buy silver on the dips! I'm getting more Ag today! Keep stocking food as well. Note: Jasmine rice & sugar in short supply due to crop failures
People laugh, but don't until you try it. I have given up on those stupid made in China blocks of magnesium. They just do not work well. The main trick is getting better tinder. If your tinder is good, you won't need all of the toys. Those toys are really only useful to avoid the wet match or broken lighter situation anyway...
Hey abdmali I hope Reggie stands over your face and slowly dunks his chocolate balls into your mouth after he hikes for 5 miles in 2 pairs of sweet pants.
Ok you were serious. Thank you for this video. There is much value in it. Make a part 2 of this video showing what you learned and it will benefit a lot of people.
The best thing to use is old bicycle tires. Make strips of the old innertube and put it in your bag. It starts very quickly and burns very hot and long. Seriously!!! I learned it just a couple of weekends ago camping/trout fishing with some of my buddies.
YES! Humbling, isn't it? This is what happened to me! I ordered a set of firesteels and decided I needed to practice. I was able to make the fat sparks, but they wouldn't catch the grass/leaves on fire. I thought it would be easy. Nope. Plus, in my area "dry" tender is not really dry enough. I made up a baggie with Vaseline soaked cotton balls and one with newspaper. Try using an old steel key to strike against your firesteel. Press pretty hard and flick your wrist downward.
So your in mission mode trying to get the matches to start the fire? I know how it feels. It is cold where you are with all the fog coming from yo head bro!
try building a fire kit and put stuff in like trioxane, wet fire, cotton balls, cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, dryer lint, dryer lint covered in wax, fat wood, fire past, fire dust, a lighter, pieces of inertube, tampons, etc.
You rule! One good tip I got with the magnesium fire starter is to cut a small piece off of a hacksaw blade. It's hardened steel and will flake off the magnesium and strike your flint just fine, all with less risk of cutting yourself or damaging your knife. The little piece of hacksaw blade weights almost nothing and can be secured to your magnesium fire starter using the included chain.
Demcad that was totally hillarious. I had tears in my eyes. Nice demonstration. I heard having cotton balls soaked in vasaline starts fires in an instant... Try that one...

Demcad the paper lights up because the fibres are small and catch alight easier.
Think about how large the fibres are in a dry leaf or the other small debris you have..
Grind up the leaves first and they will light like toilet paper. No magnesium required, just flint.

the blastmach will lite anything with ease if it white like ....tissue......toilet paper..... napkins ........cotton........ you get the idea When you want to lite grass make a bird nest with the grass you want to set on fire then open a hole in the middle to put your magesium(I always put my magesium on a tree leaf to keep it off the ground) from there use your flint or bastmatch to lite the magesium and you have firer

go to the 99 cent store or dollar tree and you can pick up 4 bic lighters for a buck ..put about 4 or 5 or even 6 in your survival gear lighters are cheap why use a match blaster thing..you can put the lighters in a zip lock bag and there you go...

here is a tip if you want it. get a small camera film container put cotton balls that have been soaked in patrolium jelly. those make very fast fire starters. your strike force will start that up fast in nearly any weather condition.put a bunch of soaked cotton balls in it. i think Vaseline will work too
kchomer1 2 years ago
you need a dime sized pile of that magnisum to get it to start

dude get a cotton ball and add it to the pine needles. use the fire starter on the cotten ball

You need to use finer starting material. Try taking cedar bark and rolling it in your hands till it is fuzzy. It works pretty well. In my experience bow drill fires are easier, but that is only after many hundreds of hours of learning how to do it.

How sharp is your knife blade now?
Its a good thing your practicing now, with the practice one learns what works and what does not. When the SHTF you will know what to do.
Thanks for posting, and being honest.
good video Demcad.

malkirah 2 years ago
those thick, hard grass stems won't ever light with firesteel. you need thin or shredded grass. the finer the fibers, the better chance you have. in your firestarting kit you should have as many lighters as you can afford/cary, a firesteel, and a small magnifying glass.
ronaldoelpaso 2 years ago
A small Fresnel lens is what you need. They make them in wallet size that would easily light that stuff. Then there is the big 8.5x11 ones that can light a stick on fire in a couple seconds.

This is epically funny demcad. At least we all learned what works and what doesn't.

5 stars for having the guts to do the video.reminds me of Jack London's great short story "To Build a Fire" all you needed to best the video was a tree overhead loaded with snow or maybe a forest fire lol

By making the video while he learned to make a fire rather than waiting until he mastered it made the vid more educational as well as fun to watch.

LOL... My son and did the same thing.... it took us a hour to start a fire..... but we did learn what not to do and what to do...

the best way to learn is to practice with your preps and learn from experience. You learned alot. Thats what counts

Note: Jasmine rice & sugar in short supply due to crop failures

you must try Your cap - it works ;-)
rbito65 2 years ago
People laugh, but don't until you try it. I have given up on those stupid made in China blocks of magnesium. They just do not work well. The main trick is getting better tinder. If your tinder is good, you won't need all of the toys. Those toys are really only useful to avoid the wet match or broken lighter situation anyway...

Ok you were serious. Thank you for this video. There is much value in it. Make a part 2 of this video showing what you learned and it will benefit a lot of people.
AbdMalil1 2 years ago
The best thing to use is old bicycle tires. Make strips of the old innertube and put it in your bag. It starts very quickly and burns very hot and long. Seriously!!! I learned it just a couple of weekends ago camping/trout fishing with some of my buddies.
beardownmikey 2 years ago
One more thing-- dry horse or cow poop will burn like a son-of-a-gun. Seriously, don't pass it up if you need fuel.
pmarie2003 2 years ago
Press pretty hard and flick your wrist downward.
pmarie2003 2 years ago
being able to build a fire is a must have skill.
However
Reggie , you demonstrated the one trait that will absolutely save your life
never ever give up
grit and determination those will help to push you through the tough times and that my friend

That was sooooo funny! That is exactly why you need to practice this stuff before you have to bug out. Nice job though! You got it done.
LiquidDuano 2 years ago 3
try building a fire kit and put stuff in like trioxane, wet fire, cotton balls, cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, dryer lint, dryer lint covered in wax, fat wood, fire past, fire dust, a lighter, pieces of inertube, tampons, etc.
piehi2 2 years ago
You rule! One good tip I got with the magnesium fire starter is to cut a small piece off of a hacksaw blade. It's hardened steel and will flake off the magnesium and strike your flint just fine, all with less risk of cutting yourself or damaging your knife. The little piece of hacksaw blade weights almost nothing and can be secured to your magnesium fire starter using the included chain.
imchet 2 years ago 2
Demcad that was totally hillarious. I had tears in my eyes. Nice demonstration. I heard having cotton balls soaked in vasaline starts fires in an instant... Try that one...
Thanks for the video....
