I liked all the solos but as a drummer and hearing all of them play I must admit Neal Schon's solo was by far the best, not to take anything away from the other guitarists becuase I would love to their drummer. But for Neal to just bring in just the Boss pedal anybody who knows guitar knows that's a distortion pedal that picks everything up dynamicly clean, no hiding behind a fuzzy distortion pedal. Neal rocked it!
There is a reason that - out of all of those players - Neal's work was chosen to fade that song out... listen to it and if you still don't get it, you need to improve your understanding of what great guitar is. It's the difference between technique and balls, licks vs. phrasing, precision vs. abrasion, spewing out notes per second vs. finding the right ones and getting tickled vs. being punched. Neal owned this.
Tell you what, and I am not going politician on you, but Schon is mad good as are Malmstein and Lynch.
I'd say we have a three-wayer going on here. I love all three of these monsters, so I need not differentiate in the way of who's better because each brings his own madness to the table and into my world.
I am an old-school Hendrix type player. I think Neil Schon one of the best of melodic rock players ever. He is definitely more rounded than these other guys. Who knew he could even "shred". But when it comes to the "neo-classical" style, shred, or whatever, Yngwie rules. Along with his speed and amazing technque, his vibrato his awesome, his bends drip with emotion. I will concede that he never grew much from his first solo album, but so what. No one surpassed him at what he does.
Very well, so your submission to the neo-classical king throne is Yngwie-to which, my response is Richie Blackmore, the founder of neo-classical guitar...
But that's really besides the point. Fact is, Neal Schon schooled all these guys that day, and they all new it.....
OK. Neal had Steve Perry and Johnathon Cain, the primary song writer of Journey. Lynch and Yngwie are are guitar icons. Yngwie changed guitar playing almost as much as Hendrix and Van Halen. Yngwie is also one of the most emotional melodic players i've ever heard. Most only know him for his speed cause they haven't heard much of him,and he's been a solo musician since 84. SOLO. i would take Schon over Lynch by a hair. But Yngwie is the man. My favs. Gilbert, Kotzen, Timmons just so you know.
don't get me wrong. I love Neals playing. He's a very underated player when people talk about technical guitarist. But Yngwie and Lynch were stylistacally (sp) and technically better this day.
Whatever-you can have both of those cookie-cutters. Neither can combine both the chops and the ability to convey emotion and melody like Neal. So I ask you this: What has Yngwie and George recorded that is worth listening to once, much less forever, like Neal has? Again, we're only debating Neal's chops vs. the other two....NOW lets debate the other two's talent of conveying melody vs. Neals....there's no comparison...
fumilo is a dip shit...only two guys were better than Neal that day. Yngwie and George Lynch..Vivian Cambell get runner up award...But Neal was great.
Neal Schon is such an amazing guitarist. He has such few and tasty solos in Journey, yet still has a great amount of technique to utilize. I wish we could have seen a little more of it in Journey.
Neal is one of the greatest players ever he has been around before and long after most of the guys who played on this track. He should be in the rock n roll hall of fame.or if there is a guitar players hall of fame. Oh hell why not both
I bet they brought in schon just to be assholes thinking he would suck. Those other guitarist were probly embarassed after this. I read somewhere that after they recorded this Neals name wasnt even in the credits as a guitarists
@RickyRicardo5150 If that's so which i'm not sure about but he's still on the front row in the middle of the cover unless you have no idea what he looks like you know he's on it somewhere
I remember reading an interview sometime ago with one of the guitarists who played on this project (wish I could remember who) and he mentioned that Schon was the biggest surprise for him. You don't really associate Journey with this sort of shredding, but the guy can certainly play.
Yes, he did...you are absolutely, positively correct-and anyone who doubts that should just ask the other guitarists who were there..Neal was a man amongst boys.....
neal schon forever! carlos saanatana was and is an amazing guitarist but when neal was around santana was outplayed. and neal wasnt evan in his prime then. he just gets better and better! inovative, soulfull rock guitarist. the same applies for his blues roots! :D
When i first bought "Santana 3" back in 1972 i never realised that most of the sensational solos were done by Schon.(e.g on'Jungle Strut', 'Taboo', 'Batuka') He outplayed Carlos on nearly every occasion. His solo on "Travelin' Blues" (Santana auditions to be found on the CD 'Acapulco Sunrise') has to be one of the best ever blues guitar pieces and he was around 15 yrs old at the time.
Thats right. I read that on later compilations Neal´s name was not printed and that he was upset about that. I guess a lot of people think Santana is a lot better than he really is because of 15/16 year old Neal. Neal´s my all time favourite and I can´t stand santanas playing. There´s a lot of live clips from that time here on youtube.
Yes, i agree, granted that Carlos was pushed to play better than ever when Neal was around (as on "Santana 2" "Abraxas" and "Caravanserai") But since the early 80s Carlos has lacked inspiration. Schon is technically more gifted and lyrical than most guitarists and doesn't stick to basic pentatonic runs although he is a blues guitarist underneath it all.
He was the best player in the stars. Also currently too!

Neal Schon shines here, along with Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult)
give me players like these everyday, (along with David Gilmore, Adrian Smith and Steve Lukather) - instead of boring Yngwie copies!
