I use the 10 yard sprint to help determine an athletes first step speed and quick acceleration. I get a lot of parents and coaches that look at me like I am crazy for even using the 10 yard sprint in training. I think they all believe that a 40 time is the only thing that matters.
I teach & train the 10 & 20 yd dash at least 85% more than I do the 40. I believe that the 40 in and of itself is shows an athletes ability to properly accelerate, not run at top speed, which is what the NFL claims. In sports rarely do athletes run a distance of more than 10 or 15 'strait' yds anyway. Parents need to be educated as to the overall value of the 10yd dash. It can be used to show relative body strength, balance, mobility & overall athleticism. You're on the right track, good luck!
