If Joseph Smith saw God face-to-face in 1820, why did he pray in his room in 1823 to find out "if a Supreme being did exist"?

Another recorded appearance of the risen Lord was to other women. Witnessing this event were Mary (mother of James), Salome (mother of James and John), Joanna, Susanna, and many others (see Mark 16:1; Luke 8:3).
And I know that some have questioned the quality of Nibley's scholarship. Did he tend to be sloppy in his research? Were his footnotes a nightmare to verify? Did he make stuff up out of whole cloth? All of these charges have been hurled at him. His defenders ignore the charges. His detractors thrill at the thought of bringing down this most prominent of LDS scholars.

Jesus held the HIGHER priesthood of Melchezidek. Therefore Jesus could perform ANY and ALL the practices of the Aaronic. All of the word and their authority originated from Jesus in the first place.
And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

I felt revelation from Heavenly Father which we needed again in that time; then I knew what we needed to do. Elder Blake McDonald (Chile, Concepcion mission): We all (six missionaries) went to higher ground and saw the sea "go out" and then come back like "none other". There were 30-50 feet surges of water. We saw all sorts of crazy stuff like houses, boats, cars floating all over the place and houses that had floated out to sea and the ocean was making incredible noises. I am not hurt in anyway and our apartment was not damaged. I did not lose any of my belongings.

Although we will see a great apostacy during end times, Jesus said that the gates of hell will not prevail against His church (Matt. 16:18) and added to that in Ephesians 3:21 "Unto him be the glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." If Joseph Smith was right that the apostacy already happen, then How could Jesus be glorified through His bride throughout all ages, world without end?

Joseph Smith misinterpreted James 1:5. James was speaking to the Hebrew Christians who were already saved asking them to ask God for Wisdom. This is not a call for the lost to seek Knowledge from God. There is a difference between Wisdom & Knowledge. Knowledge is based on known facts & Wisdom is based on the application of those facts. Joseph Smith's "origional" account of the first vision only had Jesus with No mention of God. This is different than the present adopted version. Why would he leave God out, if he actually saw him? Also during the Church revivals going on back then, it wasn't uncommon for the preachers to say they had a vision of Jesus. Joseph added God later.

If Joseph Smith saw God face-to-face in 1820, why did he pray in his room in 1823 to find out "if a Supreme being did exist"?
If his "first vision" really happened, why couldn't he tell a consistent story about it? Why did his story evolve from a spirit, to an angel, to Jesus, to God and Jesus together?
Seeing God and Jesus in person is a pretty big deal, why didn't he get his story right the first time?
