I find it amusing that too many people actually love this song yet no one seems to understand it's real meaning. I have seen all its other videos that has its lyrics and everyone who watched them just kept on debating whether it's "gray" or "grave". I don't know if you will agree with me but let's try and analyze it. To begin, this song is from the movie Batman Forever with Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne aka Batman and Nicole Kidman as his love interest, Dr. Chase Meridian.

@tezzz08 Bruce is the one saying the words in the song. He is a lonely guy living like a dead with a cold, colorless life. He only breathes because of Batman. All these changed when he met Dr. Meridian. She is the tower that Bruce is talking about that lights his dark side. This is why he said he compares her (or his encounters with her) as a kiss from a rose on a grave. On the part "the light hits the gloom on the gray/grave", I believe it is grave and not gray.

Although the song talks about a graying tower in the beginning, a tower is a structure built to give light and not to receive it. It is set out in the sea to warn ships if they are getting too close to the shallow part of the water. It also serves as a guiding light so it makes more sense to sing the light hits the gloom on the grave, a grave where Bruce feels he belongs, aside from the fact that a grave is a gloomy place to be. There, I hope you'd agree on this one.

I HAD to comment...THIS is the ONLY video that posts the CORRECT word, "grave" (NOT "grey") in the lyrics! Basically, the song is about him being in a dark place in his life, she is the light that brings happiness to him, "now that your rose is in bloom, a light hits the gloom on the grey"

I may have a dark mind but my theory is..rose on the grave as in the feeling you would get to be able to kiss someone whom is no longer reachable ie. dead.lol.also in the film they also mislead because just as this song starts to play they happen to be standing next to a grave
