where i come from their a nusence and i have always been brot up to avoid ketching them but you cant always do that and if you did you cut their heads off and reales em back for the turtles but i seen somewhere a guy got a TON of meat off of them and said they taste great so im not gunna waste any more of them!
lowering a fish that size into the water by yourself can through your back out. The water is obviously deep enough so that the gar had a comfortable landing. Gar are extremely hardy, and tossing that fish would be less stressful that a human standing stationary and falling in a soft patch of grass. Unfortunately, in orlando many fisherman kill them for population control. It's nice to see your respect and love for one of our coolest native aquatic species. Keep it up buddy.
Because unlike the northern snakehead it's a native fish that has just as much right to live there as bass. bass are farmed comercialy in huge amounts and have no danger of runing low in supply, the gar can eat as many as it can and another bass will put in the eco system and you wont notice. They also eat invasive speices such as carp and young snakeheads. You are obviously not a true fisherman if you are too stuped to respect their right to live in nature .
@BobFrick awesome attitude towards the flamers! one comment though, when releasing your fish, would it be possible to prevent the fish from landing on its back? Although gar are more sturdy than most fish, slapping into water (regardless of depth) can still injure the organs of a any fish. Just food for thought.
@werewfistruefate9 I don't think it was intentional. He was just trying to dive him straight down to get him to deeper water quicker where the temps are cooler and more oxygenated. Of course, I think he was just a bit tired and over rotated him by accident. This is the same technique a lot of striped bass fisherman use when practicing 'catch and release' in the summer time (minus the fish body-slam :p ).
I am sorry you dont understand, what happened, while I tried to get the fish back down into deeper water. They will sometimes kick as you push them down, and that reason is to get them into cooler water. I watch my fish and make sure they down. If you had expererance, with these fish you would understand what happens on a release of a 61 inch Longnose Gar, ALSO GOD BLESS YOU YOU NEED IT.
my friend used to catch gars and either cut their heads off or shoot them in the brain with a pellet gun because they are such a big nasty fish the eats all the freshwater game, like bass and carp!
u had that fish out of the water for so long thats its practically already dead u should hold upagainst your boat and see if it swims if it does let it go if it doesnt might as well keep it
I fish for gar down at a river that runs through my land, and once i pull them out, they will flop around and scooch their way back to the water for a good 7 or 8 minutes.
trust me the fish is fine i caught a longnose gar and it took me 30 minutes to take the hook out and it swam away perfectly fine alos gar are trashy fish
hi guys i got a question is that legal to take a garfish/garpike or whatever its called from the fishing spot ?? I caught some gars last time on Illinois River but i release all of them because i didnt even know what fish it is... I'm going fishing tonight and i just wanted to show one to my dad because he probobly never saw fish like this... Do you guys know anything about this?? thanks;)
here in georgia the dnr dont have any limits on gar so you keep the fish if you want them.i always just let them go.i could be wrong about the limits so somebody set me straight if i am!
lol, man dont u hate it when u get all these assholes on here telling u how to release the fish, when you've been doing it for far longer than they have, and suddenly they think they're the experts? lol
kill the fish?haha!you can take these gar by the snout and sling them back in the river and they will live!dont get me wrong i dont do that but they are one tough fucking fish!!this guy knows what he is doing!
The longnose Gar is a tough fish a long skinny type fish that needs to be speared back into the water. The videos are edited to fit, what you dont see is me watching the fish until they disapear, in the summer when its hot this method is best to get them moveing agian, sorry it looks so bad to some because she went over to far but after hundreds of releases this is best.
No she was not dead the video is edited and you dont see me watch her swim off making sure she does not come back up. Thats way I put them in head first and up high like I did, even through I did push her a little too much.
No she was not ment to go that far over I wanted to send her straight in but I push off to hard with my left arm shes ok . I did not want that tail in my face watch in slow mo and you will see there was No Body slam. Thanks for the comment. Bob.

Why you put it back ? They eat the bass, drum fish . Gars are a pest like Snakehead fish.
HomosapienBC 2 years ago
They play a role in the ecosystem by stopping overpopulation of other species, so you should let some of them live.

Just so everyone knows gar can breathe air. So it was fine being out of the water as long as it stays wet. If you dont beleive me look it up.

Gars breath air they have modified swim bladders connected to their esophagus thats why they surface so much because they need to gulp air.

WOW! What kind of release was that? Are you trying to kill fish now or what? Learn to release a fish before going out please. Rookies these days....
JuttyBoy1424 3 years ago
Read the hold post and you would not be thought of as a rookie yourself. If it were you releasing that fish you would sometimes push too much also.
