  • agreed...awesome cover...they done Dixie proud...glad to listen to it...I'll be downloading this to my iPod...totally righteous

  • Best cover of this song I've ever heard. His voice is plaintive and desperate; as you would imagine a starving, shoeless Confederate to sound. Only boys from the South could pull off such a hauntingly beautiful cover.

  • this is sexypant 69 .com u rock still

  • Damn... We miss you, Marc Ford..

  • What's the English word for "Gänsehaut"? This is what I get when I listen to the Crowes cover. Chris is a fucking god.

  • I gives a fuk how any musician is in their personal life. I want them to rock my ass off. The Crows do this. Here they just make me real happy.

  • Great band but what a dick head he is

  • 25 people are sparrows.

  • The background looks like the Cathedral at Cordoba, Spain. There's two palms on either side of the background scenery with writing on the fingers. I don't know what the writing means, or what the whole background means for that matter.

  • really sweet version

  • THE BAND relives!

  • those two black backup singers should thank god that dixie was driven down

  • @literaturecorner haha, cant get more ironic than that

  • @literaturecorner Those are the Pickens sisters they are from Jersey.

  • banned - watch?v=IqiWhswgmR8&feature=related

  • o tom dela è lindo

  • TURN EDDIE UP!

  • what a great cover!!!!!

  • Sweet!

  • an bells where ringing!! not many bands can pull of covering hits like this. hats of to black crowes, this is fucking magical

  • anyone have the solo tab?

  • with mark ford in the band. they get that sound they had in the 90s.one of the great bands of our time.

  • I can listen to this song every night, Along with the Bands version

  • wooooaaaah, these guys are ridiculous hippies, haha. Awesome!

  • @Scoob505 these are fine, respectful Georgia Boys. They deserve more respect than that comment sir..

  • @Tragic2Magic I meant that as a compliment!

  • A righteous version.... loads of soul

  • The temp is slightly slow, very tough song to play though c+

  • it doesn't have the same feel as the original...but it;s not bad

  • Great version, the only complaint I have is the drums on the chorus. They sound fine, but Levon Helm's march really makes you feel the song

  • @MrCfralick yea for sure levon is a beast in this song

  • @MrCfralick yea for sure levon is a beast in this song you just dont feel it as much espeacially the part after he says like my brother before me who took a rebel stand....in the last walts that part give me chills if you listen close you can here people cheering in the audience

  • This is almost as good as the Band. That is saying alot!

  • I've been listening to the Band for many many years and I didn't know the Black Crowes play this song.... I think this is a great version of "the night they drove old...."

I think I like the Black Crowes more now.

  • ah too much of direct knock off from the band couldn't they at least have added their own nuance. Just another example of how the more things change the more they stay the same

  • That Les Paul sings.

  • mark ford rules

  • Obviously the original from The Band is the best. I've heard quite a few versions, this is the only one that comes close. Might be because the Crowes are actually southern boys and kinda get it. It's kinda funny though considering The Band was from Canada and somehow managed to capture the spirit of the old American South with this tune. Good stuff!

  • @MagusSeraph Levon Helm was from Arkansas. The rest of The Band were from Canada.

  • speechless

  • @yovioleatuzorramadre

I'm wondering if this is "garbage", what do you think good? My guess is your an angry disco fan who still can't believe it's dead!!!

  • You Tube needs a "Love" button for videos exactly like this one!!!

  • Commendable performance of The Band's "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Black Crowes. Great job guys and a tribute to one of the greatest bands who ever played..........The Band.

  • yes yes yes!!!

  • wow awesome cover of an awesome song

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • ed is a bad ass

  • Didnt care for this song until I heard The Crowes perform it. Chris is an amazing vocalist!! Awesome band and a Awesome cover.

  • @TheCypressgrove79 suck more penis

  • Very cool. I must say. I wasn't nuts about the guitar solo though.

Killer band. Killer tune. Thanks for posting.

  • WOW what a great cover

  • crowes are a very talented band...great musicians and sound....but they are in desperate need of a songwriter...their lack of material keeps them from greatness

I'm just sayin' I AM A FAN!! don't shoot the messanger....

  • @mightybeeb THAT'S IT! THAT'S what has always bugged me about them! You hit the nail right on the head! I will listen to them until the day I die, and they do have some songs that are worth listening to that no one ever does, like "Descending", but you're right about the material.

  • @mightybeeb

Silliness. "Lack of material?" Utter silliness.

  • @67goldtops no it's not silly....this band is fantastic...but they need someone to write them some stuff

or bear down and get it done themselves...like i said I am a fan!!! but much sounds redundant?

  • @mightybeeb

The only thing that's redundant is your last post.

  • @67goldtops you call this SHIT a great band? they sounds like fucking aerosmith in the worst era....fucking garbage

  • @yovioleatuzorramadre

Funny. Aerosmith at their WORST is about as good as YOUR taste gets. So, are you having any luck yet with your marriage proposals to the girl on the "farting video??"

  • @yovioleatuzorramadre That's too bad that you feel that way. You'd like it better if you thought it was awesome. Try thinking it's awesome! you'll be right!!! haha. I tease i tease

  • Great!Great band!yeah!

  • @gianfridiber go fuck youself

  • What a great song, the Crowes did it justice. The song has such poignant lyrics about war and what was done to break the back of the south.

  • Well said...."Lovely, respectful cover and a pleasure to listen to".

  • They're not The Band. They never will be. They're The Black Crowes. This is their version of a classic song. At the time of writing this, 21 people can go jam knitting needles in their ears as they have no need of a sense of hearing. I'm a die hard Band fan and am in total agreement with scranchdip. Lovely, respectful cover and a pleasure to listen to.

  • my opinion tonight is this might be the best rock band since 1980. I love so much of their stuff that I am discovering here. I just love them!

  • nineteen fuckin bastards don´t like this video...lols

  • I am so addicted to this song right now!

  • @RandallJonesey the guitar @ like 2:20 just sounds a bit out of tune... (they are able guitarists) and the arrangement is mainly the horns so........ ?????????

  • Good cover, but the original is clearly better. Still really liked it, and thanks for bringing attention to the original.

  • I love it....The Black Crowes looked and sounded like old school rockers in this vid including being pretty high yet playing well while high.

  • A Soldier 1864

We are now falling back to the mountains

the cannons have been beating us up all day

Jeb caught a piece of iron in the shoulder

and bled out within the hour

    We are tired of dying

    and wish for peace…

    M.S. Morrison

  • They are not very able with the guitars, but a very good singer they have. Has he been smoking chocolate?

  • The Black Crowes...What a great band! Soulful!! Something today's music is lacking.

  • @skychurchify uderrated band at best!!!!

  • @skychurchify

i'm getting sick of such accusations, just look around, too lazy to dig enough? today's underground scene has SO much to offer.

  • @skychurchify

    Couldn't agree more!!

  • Instead of reading a history text book, play The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

  • Has anybody else noticed that the Robinsons are both dressed like Han Solo? The Black Crowellians.

  • @patrickjacobsonmusic= No - i didn't see anyone

  • Comment removed

  • indeed a great cover of a great song

but it is kinda strange to have two african american women doing backing vocals

  • @dougjnesbitt Whats so strange?....I'm glad to see that they aren't offended to honor it as a part of history.

  • @dougjnesbitt The war wasn't about slavery. What they teach in school is wrong.

  • @dougjnesbitt > Why is that strange? When?? When are we gonna move past it? If not now, when? I was born and raised in the south - I have white, black, mexican, and native american blood in me; and I have taken the bodhisattva vow. They have moved past it ~ you can too ...

  • John Denver's version isn't too shabby. Baez gets on my tits with her warbling...

  • Why is everyone conplaining about it being too slow? Joan Baez is the best at singing it and the tempo is perfect. The Black Crowes did a brilliant cover...

  • Everyone needs to check out the Zac Brown cover....such freaking power!

  • I can't think of a better band to cover this song! Nice freakin' job guys and gals!

  • DA BEST SINGER TOO TAKE ON SINGGING THIS HERE SONG,- SO FAR.

  • I dont think its lethargic or too slow. Remember this was written by a Yankee, covered by a Southern band. Im not gonna argue who's version is better, But I know who's version I like more

  • fuck off with al the political bullshit, wow.

The civil war might have been started by trich and powerful men, but it was fought by poor but decent men who had no choice in the matter.

This song is a fictional account of one such person.

If you had happened to been born in the wrong place at the wrong time, you would have BEEN Virgil Cane. Or you would have swung.

Btw this is a great cover, they made it their own and added a distinct southern sound to it.

  • @Jookkor Well said - couldn't agree more

  • I prefer Levon Helm's drumming, but this is a great cover nonetheless.

  • ah,i see.its a song about the south.so,people gotta bring in politics.Just enjoy the song, people,& get off the rest!!!!!

  • THEEEE BEST cover of this song by far, wow! Sooo good.

  • A mthrfking republican Ad before this vid, holy mfking ironing

  • @tallnywrtr LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. THE GUY HAD A FATHER AND THEY BOTH WORKED. CLEARLY NOT DEMOCRATS.

  • @lousinup chris is a democract

  • @FunLovingCriminals77 chris robinson? I'm not surprised. If you are in the entertainment industry, and you know nothing about politics, call your self a Democrat. You will be considered a deep person and noone will test your knowledge. It's the path of least resistance. I'm so pissed right now. I'm watching c-span. A trucker calls in to question the abuse of power by the EPA and they never address his question and laughed like he was reporting a UFO sighting. Chris is boldly in the "in-crowd".

  • I like the Black Crowes, but this is not a good cover, sorry. Sounds lethargic, and doesn't have the emphatic pride of the Band's original or live versions of this wonderful song. Sounds really half-assed, and is very disappointing.

  • @cpob1688 compared to Baez it's slow. The Band is slower than Black Crowes

  • really good, but there's only one real thing...

  • rip rick and richard THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE TAKEN THE VERY BEST

  • This is So unbelieveably GOOD!!! They did such a great job with this cover......

And BTW LARRYHARRISON11....The Black Crowes recorded this WITH Levon Helms @ Levon Helms studio in Woodstock NY....

Go on Robinson Brothers!! Make LEVON PROUD!

  • this is really good.really good.

  • Comment removed

  • Most of the people criticizing this and making pointless arguments about which band plays the better version, couldn't carry a tune to save their lives.

  • Seriously, having watched this a few times more, and the Band;s version, this is ridiculously pale. I do reallt like the Crowes, and I although I like The Band, a lot of their rep hinges on the factt that they were deemed 'cool'. But in this instance, the Crowes are not in the same murder,

  • This was a fantastic cover. I played this and the clip from "The Last Waltz" back and forth. The two versions certainly are incredible in their own way and there was definitely much more emotion with the Band's version, but I feel the Crowes did a great job in adding their own stamp on it without losing anything felt from The Band's version.

  • I like Chris and the Crowes also, but not only does he make no effort to craft his own vocal interpretation, it sounds like a tribute band imitation. Don't get it. Why?

  • @MrAndersoncouncil I don't know...it's really really puzzling isn't it.

  • @clean3 Don;t know if your being facetious or not, but taking you at your word, yes.

    Stilll, kinda like it.

  • @MrAndersoncouncil Look, the Band parted company a long time ago....this is happening in front of your eyes, and unless my ears decieve me is pretty damn good....why not just dig it for what it is and stop asking pointless questions.

  • @clean3

How about, 'blow it out your ass, half-wit.' Is that pointed enough for you? So many of you little punks come on here just to fight - would love to see you in person mouthing off to a stranger like that. It wouldn't be me, I assure you.

  • @MrAndersoncouncil Well he did say stop asking pointless questions. "blow it out your ass, half-wit" isn't a question, pointed or not its rather redundant.

I think the subject of the song is what made it even for The Band, because although it was a good song, it is not anywhere near as amazing as what people think it is, no matter who is playing it. But the lyrics are emotion provoking. People mistake this for musical excellence.

  • Wel

"blow it out your ass, half-wit", isn't really a question, and it's hardly redundant,

but fair enough. I love the Crows, I feel this cover is lazy, but still enjoyable.Unfortunately, most attempts at engaging in serious discussion here are met with either mindless allegiance or wild hostility. Whether it's a good choice to keep singing it - anyone - that's a whole 'nother discussion.

  • i dont think anyone can argue this is any better than what the band could produce, but chris robinson does have a good voice for this song

  • And I love Chris, really do, but Levon sings this one like no one else in the planet, no doubt. @larryharrison11 is right.

  • I just had to go change my pants.

  • You Take What You Need And You Leave The Rest. But They Should Never Have Taken The Very Best. AMEN

  • the guitar player looks like the young Dickie Betts, but his playing not...

  • The Band! A band forever as are the crowes and we are still driving dixie down- these guys have soul Im glad they stuck it out through to good and bad!

  • To all Americans (and Canadians) we must NEVER forget are history, it is a part of us and will never die!!!

  • Saw Zac Brown in concert and he done this song, of course you cant compare anything to "The Last Waltz" version, but it was done well, the Crowes version was alittle slow for me, could have picked the tempo up just a bit IMO.

  • A great cover, I have always considered the Black Crowes to be worthy successors to The Band.

  • GEN LEE WE NOW SEE YOUR WISDOM BUT NOW TOO LATE!!!!!!!

  • I find this video quite Ironic.....It's a song about the Civil War and they have Black Women Sing in it......Think about it....

  • @jwstorey911 What do you think the civil war was about. ??

  • @jwstorey911 life is ironic, they drove dixie down, get it, so it is, and it will always be ...just because they have black back up singers doesn't mean shit except that they will always be looked down upon by oblivious heartless soulless non southerns, for it is what it is and these mf have soul...as does this song.....if you really know what it is like to be a southerner black or white..houses towns and people were burned and are only a memory, and this songs serves as only a part of that

  • @caledonia62 we should have but im black so i was on yall side anyway lol

  • the background singer are so hot. Those dresses are awsome

  • great song so true so great

  • love this song i love it i love it

  • Shannon Curfman does a wonderful rendition of this song. It just runs a distant 3rd.

  • this is a GREAT cover of a GREAT song. no need to compare to The Band or to The Band's "The Last Waltz". the Crowe's are fantastic, ..and simply just paying homage to one of the best American (Canadian) band's ever to hit a live stage, period.

  • i KNOW,RIGHT!TWO OF THE ALL TIME BEST.

  • @scranchdip The Crowes are smart enough to know that neither they nor anyone else will every be The Band. It's be stupid to try to just sing this like The Band, and the Crowes aren't dumb enough to try. They're doing it like, well, like The Black Crowes. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel, and that's precisely their charm. This is good, old-fashioned fun. The Crowes, whatever else they may be are not pretentious, and it's awful hard not to enjoy the infectious fun.

  • As a New York yankee, it's a shame the South didn't win.

  • @Caledonia62 Deo Vindice

  • @Caledonia62 as a Virginian,,, it's for the best that we didn't!

  • @crcausey Why? If slavery had been allowed to run it's course and fade away naturally, I think that there would be a lot less racial tension in the United States. It was already starting to dissolve; by the time of the Civil War, the only nations that still had slavery were Brazil and the United States. By 1884 Brazil had gotten rid of slaves. The CSA wouldn't have taken much longer. There would be a lot less hate if owners had chosen to release their slaves rather then being forced to.

  • like my brother before me i took a reble stand love this song

  • @petey6469 more like you bent over and took the dixie cock

  • Wow..Best cover ever!! This band rocks!!

  • I agree with diarmcon...I am a HUGE fan of the Band and just kinda like the Black Crowes and I think this cover is awesome. There is a real "heart and soul" to this cover. Not just "play by numbers".

  • Long Live Georgia!!!!

  • Not sure where or why there is so much venom in the posts.

This is a very warm version with a fantastic bridge.

    Increase the peace.

  • why argue or shit on the musicians? This is clearly a heartfelt cover and it sounds great?

And fuck you for shitting on the south too. I'm not even from America, and I love their south the most. Try actually going there are meeting people, maybe you'll understand........

  • @Jookkor are=and. Oops. A bit too much burbon. Guess where I learned to love that stuff?

  • LOVE THE BAND.. They did a great job on this one... Long live the 60's

  • doesn't hold a candle to the band.

  • I love the sound of the Hammond B-3 in this song at around 2:40 +

  • eddie harsch solo: God music!!!

  • @psike5000

Marc Ford solo: Divine on earth music!!!

  • I have always loved that song.this version do absolute right to The Band's original version.Very nice...

  • I think you are taking the Manuel and Danko thing a little to serious....it is a celebration of one of the best musical outfits ever... the Crowes pay homage to their heros...just like we do listening to the music.

  • @plaebslayer personally I don't like the Black Crows. Their only good song is remedy in my opinion, this is not very good at all compared to The Band. I had tickets to see them at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Sunrise Florida back in 90 and gave them away. The best cover of all time ever was Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower. Van Halen had a few "good" covers, other than that I don't like remakes.

  • This is just incrediable. The emotion and soul that is poured into this. I'm sorry, but only a southerner can really nail this song. A Canadian may have written it, but an Arkansan put the soul in it. Baez sings a nice easy to listen to song, but crap people she didn't even get the words right. She just liked the tune and had no idea of the emotion and the feelings evoked by the tune. I for one had a great uncle who "was just 18, proud and brave, but a yankee laid him in his grave."

  • I saw them last year in Edmonton and they covered Alabama what a treat. Peace Imij

  • why the hell are the Crows singin this

  • @CursedDoughnut because they are fucking sick and he is a soulful singer as was levon you fucking retard. thats like saying why does the grateful dead do bob dylan songs you fuck

  • @LedZeppelin362

well EXCUSE ME, but I have never though of them as a "southern" group so thats why I was surprised they sang this song

  • @CursedDoughnut theyre from georgia

  • @CursedDoughnut its the Crowes and they're only the best southern rock band of the last 22 years ...have another donut

  • this really is a beautiful cover, i kind of was leary to listen cause i thought it would ruin my thoughts of the black crowes, cause the bands songs are just so perfect to me, like they couldnt be touched, but they did this song and didnt change alot like other artists would do, you can tell they really love the band and what they stood for, this is the best cover ive ever heard

  • Excellent cover, but it does lack the emotion that Levon puts into it, and the guitar that Robbie bleeds with. Although Robbie wrote it, there is a LOT of Levon in this song, too bad he doesn't sing it anymore (years in fact)

  • fuck commercials

  • @guitarbutt Laff

  • simply great

  • Good vocal, they lack a little tightness in some parts of the song but pull it together well enough for me, I sense they were feeling the grove pretty good through most of the song, the lead at the 3:25 could have been a little more soulful note wise to carry into a better climax, Good performance! not as great as the Band but close enough to enjoy!

  • What a great version of this song.. very moving..

  • Love it makes me cry my dads best tune brilliant cover love it

  • Love this band so much!! A REAL band, playing REAL music :D extremely talented and amazing live! If you haven't seen them live before....SHAME ON YOU!! :D
