Onie Wheeler was a truely great musician and singer not really given his due credit. His fresh mellow voice is refreshing to listen to. His version of Mama prayed so loud in Her Sleep is one of a kind if anyone posts it. Loved this song....country music as it was, and as far as i am concerned, always will be.
ive got the 45 of johns been shuckin my corn,, it came out when i was a kid in 73,, i remember makin my aunt play it for me all the time then when i grew up she give it to me and today i still got the 45 ,, if i had a cam id post it
Thanks for posting this video. Onie Wheeler is one of my all time favorites. Saw him first Thanksgiving weekend of 1965 on Friday Night Opry then the following night on Opry. "Go Home" is one of Onie's best. This must have been before the Roy Acuff wreck in July 1965, as Shot Jackson is still with them as are Jay & Doyle the Nelson Brothers who performed with Onie on many recordings. Thanks again. Never thought I'd see Onie on a video like this. keep it here forever. hud9159
My mom went to school with onie's daughter, karen wheeler,in ellisville, mo. she was a good country singer too ! Stovall's Grove in wildwood,mo. a tiny honky-tonk,has onie in their "hall of fame" where he sometimes played
Onie was talented performer, he was one of roy acuff's smokey mountain boys, not only playing the harmonica, but doing the train whistle with his mouth on roy's train songs such as the wabash cannonball.
he was on Sun records in the 1950's and traveled on the same bill with Elvis. he lived in the small town of Sherman/Jedburg,Mo. in st.louis county, in the 1960's and would do the opry with acuff on the weekends.
Indeed a rare footage. Great to see Onie. Other than being a solo performer and a member of Roy Acuff's boys, he once also played bass for Flatt & Scruggs in 1958. I'm pretty sure he was the one Lester got this song from.
i love this vid, country music as it should be not this modern rubish they dare to call country today. didnt onie die while playing onstage at the opry. if so what a way to go.
