Very few people know that this song was written by Shri Purushottam Pankaj . He belonged to a small village called Usayani in Firozabad district in UP. He was my uncle ans passed in about 20 years back in the village. He went to Bombay after this song and came back about 10 years before he pased book. He was in love with Banzaaran who had a dera in our village and wrote this song.

I apologize regarding Yesudas being a Tamil. I did not know that he is from Kerala instead. Certainly I know about the languages of India and know that our states are linguistic states. I wanted to marry a Dixit woman many moons ago who was from Tamil Nadu originally and who's father was fairly senior in the Indian government! Perhaps that is why Tamil Nadu is embedded so ddeply in my mind. :-)

Possible. By a large margin Californians and New Yorkers who are my friends preferred Rafi and Mukesh over Yesudas. But then I was not conducting a scientific experiment and they never heard Tamil songs sung by Yesudas, only Hindi songs that are in my collection. They were commenting upon the voice and not the music. Perhaps your friends preferred the music in the Tamil songs and not necessarily Yesudas' voice because in my opinion his voice is not as deep as Rafi's/Mukesh's.

for some people, Indian movie means Hindi movies, South Indian movies means 'Tamil' and South India means Madras, and all South Indians are Madrasis. Please know that there are other languages also. Yesudas is not a Tamil, but Malayalee (Ever heard about a language called Malayalam? or a place called Kerala? no no, not any where else, in India only). To know how great a singer Yesudas is, you should listen to really really complex and difficult songs by him in malayalam (Not Tamil)

If you never heard about Malayalam, you can browse the list of Indian National Awards for Best movies, Best Directors, Best Actors, Best singeres, Best Actresses etc. there you will find so many time this word 'Malayalam' than Tamil, Telugu, Kannada (for your info, these are othere South Indian Languages) , Oriya, Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi, Assamese, Konkani, Kashmiri, or any other Indian Languages Other than Hindi and Bengali

I guess your target may have been narrow (pun intended). You can't find a film singer who can sing carnatic and hindustani with ease in India. He cannot have won 7 national awards with a unidimensional voice against Mukesh's 2 and Rafi's 1. He could not have sung a song that Rafi could not in the movie 'Tansen' music by Ravindra Jain without deep voice. Either check with a more knowledgeable sample size or listen to wide variety of songs in all languages or get a lesson in music, whatever.

Sweet song. It is a challenging thing to sing in non-native language and he has done a phenomenal job. I am sure in his own way he is as great as any other singer from the Hindi side of the art world. But for me, if I am going to listen to a Hindi song, unfortunately Yesudas' voice does not hold as much appeal as does the voice of most of the Hindi greats. But then I am sure they could not sing a song from the Southern part of India as well as he sang Hindi songs.

Very slight difference all the way through. If you are a native speaker you can tell there is something off. It is weird. He has a fantastic voice but there is just a little something that reminds you that it is not native accent. Very good.

i cannot fully agree with you, his voice is the greatest ever. But at the same time, I agree that may be his accent slightly different from the native hindi singers, (sorry to say that somehow his malayalam accent is interfering while he sings hindi songs) but that is quite natural man, for person from far south, away from the Hindi Belt.

What matters is there is no doubt he is the best singer in India.

I don't know if there exists an objective criterion to judge such a thing as voice. I respect your opinion that "in your opinion he is the best singer in India". I do agree that it is very commendable that he sings so well in a language such as Hindi given his Malyalam roots. I personally prefer the voices of many singers from the Hindi belt but then I am biased. I can tell you that when my friends in the US, non-Indians, listen to these voices they prefer Rafi and Mukesh over Yesudas.
