can you put a compressor in the aux? i ask that because wouldnt you still get the dry uncompressed signal? and obviously if you want to compress something, you dont want the dry. (great vid)
HELP :-( my songs/sessions sound PERFECTLY mixed (in protools) but after I bounce it to wav/mp3 the quality becomes HORRIBLE. what am i doing wrong or not doing in the space between being totally done with the song and prior to bouncing???
one question.. why is that everytime i input a track on pro tools, like, a beat so i can sing on it. the beat always sounds different? if the beat has effects on both ears, like making echo and stuff like, i never feel it on pro tools. or it sounds just on one ear.
Okay, this will probably sound dumb but for some reason when I record vocals every now and then I have an issue where the volume fades in and out. I save and close out, reboot and still have the problem. It's not often, but so far I've only recorded myself and would REALLY like to get to the bottom of this before I start having others come to record cause I want to be ready to go when they get to the spot. lol Thanks
@refuse2bstopped This might be caused if you have a condenser microphone that someone sings to close to it and spits all over it. Two questions.. if you have a reverb on the AUX channel set to 100% mix (wet) then I don't see how you are going to control the spatial quality. Perhaps I am confusing wet/dry with the mix level?
Second, what is the purpose of dither? Why would I use it, and what are the ramifications if I don't? This is something of a loaded question since I believe dithering take the track from 24-bit to 16. Wouldn't things like an MP3 or AAC encoder do this as well?
@DaveRoscoe1 the spatial quality is set on the reverb itself. predelay and early reflections. You want to set the aux send to 100% wet so that you will not have a double of the dry signal sent to it. Then increasing the level of the send in essence make the signal seem "wetter". But spatially, use the settings in the reverb, or different reverbs themselves. good question.

Hey whats up man I love the video man...i would like to ask you a question. I'm having trouble setting my outboard compressor. Here is my setup: AKG C414, Alesis 3630 compressor, Focusrite TrakMaster Pro, Digi002 and protools 8. I just need to know what a good setting is to start with for rap and r&b vocals or if you can do a video on compression. Thanks man. Keep up the good work.
@JaySwagga65 if you send your trak to an AUX EQ you will still hear the original un-EQed signal. this would likely create some phase/ frequency artifact issues.
EQ can be nice after a Verb or delay in an AUX so that you can tweak the frequencies of the effect.
Comp is awesome in buses, especially parallel compressing drums to get a hard New York slamming feel. just have to be aware of latency and phasing issues when doing this, you want to ping your tracks to make sure it's all in sync.
dude u suck im a ceartified engineer, why would you fead into an aux and then to the stereo buss all you have to do is send every track to 1 and 2 stero out and if you wanna muix down just plug 1 2 out from the back of the interface and then back in on in 1 2 mute the audio track make its input 1 and 2 and record have it on mute though putting an aux out 12 and having the stereo buss out 1 and 2 the aux will only add because the aux goes out the stereo buss aswell so ur just adding moresoun
Dude Can you actually show us How to actually send the bus to the aux to the monitors. Cuz I dont know how to do none of that shit. Ur talkin ur not really showin. Why dont you actually create a whole new session, start from scratch and show us what to do??? Cuz its like ur teasing me and not really giving me the information I wanna hear. Thank You.
Mic1 i have learned so much from your videos is there anyway you could put up a video of hwo to master like most peope have a mastering chain that they go thru like different types of pulgins to build and bring out a mix. I would just like to hear your mastering tips
I have a problem. I followed your guide for setting up buses mix down, monitors, and such. I also labeled everything, but i can't seem to get the stereo audio final mix down channel to record data from inside the session. please help! is there any setting that i might have to change to get this to work? i am running Pro Tools LE on a PC. Please Help this is pissing me off!
make sure you note that if you place reverb or effects on an aux, yes, you DO want 100% wet mix on that aux channel. You then control the amount of dry signal from the original signal in the amount it is "sent out" to the aux.. If you do not place 100% wet on the aux, then likely you will have some phasing problems, especially with non PTHD systems.
haha! I've been messin' with PT for 5 years, and never used a single aux track... But i built a new computer every year an always put my file on an external HD to say Pross Speed so putting a ton of the same plugins never wrecked me...but I now know a better way... gracious!
hey great tutorials, ? after making monitor bus & aux track and sending them to monitor aux track. now im not able to solo individual tracks, without soloing aux track. it didnt seem like you had to do that on the tutorial.
This is one of the most important things for a beginner:) I remember when I've been doing the same mistakes until I've found that SEND channel in Cubase SX...No one told me about it before so that kind of tutorials are very helpful indeed!
I just have a quick question, when i try to bus multiple plug ins like EQ, COMP, Desser, and Reverb on one AUX mono track, it does not seem work the same versus adding each plug in on each track. Any suggestion? I would really appreciated.
riskycbk: From what I know EQ,COMP, DESSER chain must be used as an INSERT so the whole signal will go trough it . Reverb, delay you may use as SEND on AUX tracks...This may be the reason why it sounds different to you...
QUESTION: I need to create separate headphone mixes for a tracking session, so that every individual headphone output has its own mix eg. one guy may want more bass, another guy might want more guitar, so what I did was set up sends to those output channels but I couldn't get any signal
What would be the best way to go about creating separate headphone mixes inside pro tools? and is this even a feasible way because of latency issues that could occur?
yea but if your sending more than one track to the same channel with a certain reverb and delay, doesnt that mean that im forced to have those tracks with the exact same reverb and delay?? what if i want them all to have reverb, but not the same kind of reverb.
Nice Tutorial.....I do have a question....I am a little confused....so basically what you were doing at the end there was taking everything and mixing it down to one track w/o bouncing.......SO U CAN DO THAT WITH VOCALS AS WELL?? EX.
If I stacked the main vocal 2 or three times...once I mix it how i want it....I can combine those 2 or 3 tracks into one w/o having to bounce them down?
I have been doing this the hard way for a long time....Trying to conserve tracks
you dont teach that stuff. and mastering is a science and art. you dont teach that nor can you just learn it. basically eq tracks dont compress everything. use light compression on the master track and a overall eq.. i like eq'ing first then compress then add a limiter. be careful you can easily ruin a track.. look up loudness war. eq/compress/limit/stereo expansion/ harmonic excitement (sonic maximizers) it takes years to really understand mastering.
I never mastered the song. But the mastering engineer would probably do something like this. EQ----->Compress------>exciter or widener---------->limiter------------->dither.
Sometimes they rearrage the order depending on the source material. But really mastering takes years to get right.... the same goes for mixing, but I would never discourage anyone from trying to learn it on their own. Get Bob Katz book, "Mastering Audio". Theres a great deal to be learned from that book.
hey bro! nice tutorial vids!! awesome tips!! I can consider myself your friend on this chapter lol.. cuz it happened to me hehe lol 10 reverbs on the THING and it crashes.. haha lol
btw just another numb question there should be no clipping (distorcion/red light )at all in all the channels right? you music on this tutorial is hella sick! I like the lead!
I feel you bro, I learned the hard way also. Every once in a while clipping is ok, just as long as it is not audible. Of course monitors will help you decide what is acceptable. But generally, yes, you want to avoid clipping. Keep your tracking and your mixing levels low. I mix no higher than -6dbFS on my final mix.
hey bro another question do you use a Master Fader Cuz i used in one project and when i tried to reduce the volumen i kinda didnt work cuz you know i put izotope and i guess this made it sound super loud ...well anyways yeah my question was do u use the master fader?
These videos basically prevented countless hours of wasted time and mistakes! Thank you so much man! I don't know what else you could possibly cover but I'd watch it and be sure to learn something!
wait you never went back to talking about the midi track setup from the other video. i'm a protools noob i need help with setting up my akaimpd24 and recording it into midi tracks.
i can see the its working but i cant hear the playback... :( if you could help i'd love you forever
If you see signal that means your mpd is hooked up correctly for midi. You do realize that the mpd is just a controller and has no sounds, right? You will need to make an instrument track and load a softsynth such as battery and have samples loaded for you to hear the playback.
Your tutorials are great. Thanks for putting them out there. How do you do the mastering of a song though. Do you master with that mixdown track? That's where I get thrown off.
Mastering is your last step in the production process. Preferrably have a professional master your mixes in a tuned room, with mastering grade gear. If you're on a budget, you can attempt to master you own projects but be prepared to have a lot of patience.
Great tutorial. You summed up some important features in an easy manner. I always think of busses driving on different routes. A bus is routing the audio to different tracks. So I think of routing as busses driving on routes. Works for me.
Thank you for this video; very interesting, and well put across. Cheers Mike.

make sure you note that if you place reverb or effects on an aux, yes, you DO want 100% wet mix on that aux channel. You then control the amount of dry signal from the original signal in the amount it is "sent out" to the aux.. If you do not place 100% wet on the aux, then likely you will have some phasing problems, especially with non PTHD systems.

Hi is it better to put 2 mono reverb or one stereo reverb to get nice vocal
mamabbnn 2 years ago
try it out and you tell me what you hear. Try 3 reverbs... 4? pan them different. Let your ears be the judge.
mic1one 2 years ago
it is a big difference with 2 mono reverbs I used 2 L/R short & 2 L/R long for lead vocal mono very nice and thank you for that.

Can u show the mastering steps that u do to master the final mix that u did for this song?
forlovebeyou 3 years ago
you dont teach that stuff. and mastering is a science and art. you dont teach that nor can you just learn it. basically eq tracks dont compress everything. use light compression on the master track and a overall eq.. i like eq'ing first then compress then add a limiter. be careful you can easily ruin a track.. look up loudness war. eq/compress/limit/stereo expansion/ harmonic excitement (sonic maximizers) it takes years to really understand mastering.
Captnuendo 2 years ago
I never mastered the song. But the mastering engineer would probably do something like this. EQ----->Compress------>exciter or widener---------->limiter------------->dither.
Sometimes they rearrage the order depending on the source material. But really mastering takes years to get right.... the same goes for mixing, but I would never discourage anyone from trying to learn it on their own. Get Bob Katz book, "Mastering Audio". Theres a great deal to be learned from that book.

What's the advantage with recording your track in real-time?

hey bro! nice tutorial vids!! awesome tips!!
JeytiJey 3 years ago
I feel you bro, I learned the hard way also. Every once in a while clipping is ok, just as long as it is not audible. Of course monitors will help you decide what is acceptable. But generally, yes, you want to avoid clipping. Keep your tracking and your mixing levels low. I mix no higher than -6dbFS on my final mix.

hey bro another question do you use a Master Fader Cuz i used in one project and when i tried to reduce the volumen i kinda didnt work cuz you know i put izotope and i guess this made it sound super loud ...well anyways yeah my question was do u use the master fader?

wait you never went back to talking about the midi track setup from the other video. i'm a protools noob i need help with setting up my akaimpd24 and recording it into midi tracks.
i can see the its working but i cant hear the playback... :( if you could help i'd love you forever
LeonardShelby09 3 years ago
If you see signal that means your mpd is hooked up correctly for midi. You do realize that the mpd is just a controller and has no sounds, right? You will need to make an instrument track and load a softsynth such as battery and have samples loaded for you to hear the playback.

Your tutorials are great. Thanks for putting them out there. How do you do the mastering of a song though. Do you master with that mixdown track? That's where I get thrown off.
hpons9 3 years ago
Mastering is your last step in the production process. Preferrably have a professional master your mixes in a tuned room, with mastering grade gear. If you're on a budget, you can attempt to master you own projects but be prepared to have a lot of patience.

micone you are the best i must admit you get to the point.

Camtasia 6. Really cool program.

Great tutorial. You summed up some important features in an easy manner. I always think of busses driving on different routes. A bus is routing the audio to different tracks. So I think of routing as busses driving on routes. Works for me.
fridrikur 3 years ago
Thanks. Thats good imagery of busses. Never thought of it like that but it makes sense.
