If the ancient historians are to be believed, no, the calendar that evolved into our current calendar started out with ten months and wasn't based on the phases of the Moon at all. Even when the other two months were added, our calendar still is based on the position of Earth in its orbit around the Sun, not the phase of the Moon.
It's also due to the fact that any motion "felt" is relative to our perspective. We can't see the motion of the Earth in everyday life, as atmosphere tends to stay in place due to gravity, so there is no evident motion.
To clarify on my previous comments, I should add that:
"Tidal forces" result in "Tidal Locking" of Moon to Earth. In other words, as Ms. Doris Daou expresses correctly, this phenomenon causes that the same side of the moon always faces the Earth.
Unfotunately the WRONG portion of the animation (from 0:27 to 0:40 seconds) shows a moving surface of Moon towards the Earth which contradicts not only the above mentioned important facts but also Doris Daou's statement.
Several months. The exact answer depends on where the Earth and Mars are relative to each other, and how much rocket fuel you can afford to spend accelerating and decelerating to get there.
hey, are you sure? because my teacher tought us that he moon turns to the other way of the earth planet and that the earth is always faicing the north way to the sun and then she told us after that she doesnt care about it which explains that its wrong..... ooppss mistake do not understand this because i made a mistake ok and anyways ii have to go eat breaksfast see you all :)
WOW!!! With all due respect, she is perhaps the most beautiful Astronomer I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Just look at her from 0:41 - 0:44, she is absoltuely ravishing and gorgeous. Of course, the information presented here is also illuminating, and like a few others here, I am humbled to say that this is the first time I fully understand this phenomenon. NASA should recruit her to inspire more young men to become Astronomers.
great video -- where did you get the animations? they're some of the best renderings i've seen. the earth should spin 4x faster, but it's a good demo.
The animations were developed in-house by one of our astronomers. And, yes, the Earth should spin faster, but when we made it spin at the right speed, it was just a blur...
Question: If the lighted ared's on our planet is said to be light from city's,, Then why do they say The moon's is not, it is Valcano's Some one help me please.
The only light you see on the moon is either light from the Sun ("sunlight") or light reflected from the Earth ("earthshine"). The *coloration* of the moon is caused by different types of rock, the darker areas being from lava formed during catastrophic events like collisions. There are no active volcanoes on the moon.
This video should be shown to people in Astronomy classes. It explains the moon quite succinctly in only 2 minutes. Good video, I recommend teachers utilize it for their classes *thumbs up*
Yea Rgr. Tht! If I would've had this kinda thinking in School,it would sure be different right now,And I'm not sure if I would remain on earth haha. Fly off for a while in my space craft. And I'm Serious too.. :)
Cool video. I am a special education teacher, and it is always great to find visuals to share with my students to explain abstract concepts. Thanks! Do you have anymore?

How does the light from the Sun shines the moon fully(Full Moon) when the Earth is blocking the light?
xuanwee1996 2 years ago 15
We've actually got a video on that topic called "What Causes an Eclipse of the Moon?"

SO the AD calendar is not base on the moon?

how comes we dont feel the earth moving.
checko20rs 2 years ago
That's a good question. I've been wondering this myself.
kellyilla 2 years ago
what u "feel" or expect from moving is due to acceleration. constant uniform motion dosnt have any acceleration so you dont feel the earth moving.
Shuffle3956 2 years ago 5

gravity pulls us down, and since we're so small on earth, and the earth actually rotates so fast, it is impossible to feel it

WRONG animation from 0:27 to 0:40 seconds!
This portion of animaiton shows, featured surace of the moon changes fron the point of view of an observer on the Earth which is NOT correct!

Is that really how fast the earth rotates? or are they speeding it up to show the changes over time?
babyzdp700 3 years ago
No, it's sped up. If we showed it in real time, you'd have to watch the video for four weeks to see the entire lunar cycle.
