@southport97 - Not originally - Richway was originally owned by Rich's Department Stores. They were later bought by Federeated Department Stores and changed most of the stores into Gold Circle in 1986, then they were bought by Target's parent company in 1988, and all the remaining Gold Circles became Targets. Rich's Department Stores went out of business in 2005.
you know, thats not a bad price for a console. Today the same price would make a 360 like 500 dollars. which is about the same price as owning a 360 for 5 years since you have to keep replacing them or fixing them because they break; but whatever, this is a pointless youtube drunk comment; which I will regret in the morning.
169.99 was a lot of cash back then when you consider that minimum wage was like 3 dollars a hour. my parents use to pay 75 bucks a month on rent back then.
@wgamador $169.99 in 1983 is close to 4 bills today. I had Olympians for play shoes, but I begged enough and my Mom got me Nike (pronounced NYK with no "e" back then) Burt Bruins (they were like $32.99, a cool $75.00 in todays' money) for school. Then I wore those to play baseball in and ripped the fuckers. I knew for sure at that point an ass whooping was headed my way, and I deserved it. My kid knows not to ask for $75.00 shoes, he is smarter than I was apparently.
@mindofmorrison Dayton Hudson did not grow Target by spreading out from the home office (Minneapolis), they deployed by market demographics. One example was they completely skipped Kansas City to open in demographically superior Wichita, KS.
Damn! When I was a kid, In My neighborhood(The Ghetto!) If you owned a Atari 2600 or Colecovision system or If you even had cable t.v. or Air conditioning, You were considerd -$-Rich! Even basic utilities were considerd a luxury! I spent alot of time alone in the dark with my friends, The ROACHES! (lol!)
in the future atari and coleco and intelivision will be rare i will be rich i have 10 of each old game system in mint condition i will be rich!!!!!! ps1 and new game systems will be like atari and etc now
I had one of those early Record-a-call units back in the 80s and it had this little remote that produced a unique tone that the unit would recognize when you phoned home to check your messages. There were only so many different tones, so your messages could be hacked by people using war dialers and tone generators.
@slipknot789able $169. back in 1984 is a lot of money compared to today. Prices are at least 10 times today on lots of things today, such as the gasoline price but gas prices are consistent with everything else.
@ak47oooo Today: show a commercial that's related to the product in the most obscure way, trying to appeal to the customer by using something like humor or sex. I really miss the old days.
The company has been around since 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company, and officially opened the first Target branded store in 1962. So, Target stores have been around since 1962, but the main company behind it since 1902. :)
Crazy i live in rockford illinois..i guess like the third largest city in the state of illinois and we didnt get a target until like 96 or 97.Not that targets this GREAT place but it would have been cool when i was a kid instead of hanging out at K mart
Coleco kinda suffered from lack of games. Same thing that hurt Intellivision, & pretty much every single retro game system, until the original NES/Famicom. At least Coleco could play Atari 2600 games. That kind saved it. So many people had Atari. Graphics don't mean much if there are no games to play.
The Commodore 64 came before the NES and was probably THE most successful retro system ever made! but yes, the NES & Famicom were hugely successful :) Although i went straight from the C64 to the Amiga ;)
Damn...$169 bucks!!! In 1982 that was a hell of a lot of coin. I guess the Wii at $199 isn't such a bad price. PS3 and X-Box at $400, there's your inflation baby. I had a ColecoVision in 1983 for Christmas. I thought I was the coolest kid on the block. Beat the hell out of the 2600 Atari. I wish I still had it.
Well for its time it was an amazing system! I only had 3 games for it, namely Donkey Kong, Turbo & Zaxxon but yes it was far more advanced than the Atari :)
I never even seen or heard of a Target store until around 1998 when the first one opened in south eastern PA. I guess they were a west coast thing back then? My parents bought me a 2600 at clover in around 82 for around 189 or so. Realize that 189 dollars in 82 was a lot more than it is now. It was originally $199 in 77, which is probably close to 500 in todays dollars. The original 77 version had MUCH better joysticks, but you wouldn't know it by looking at it (the insides were better made)
@revolutionika Actually the PS3 and X-BOX 360, since the Wii is like a little brother to ColecoVision even though its not made by the same company AND the Wii plays old games from the NES, SNES etc. SO we'll be laughing at the PS3 and XBOX 360........oh what hell lets all laugh RIGHT NOW, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
There were Targets back then??? I'm 37, and the only department stores that I can remember were Richway and K-mart, and some big, huge JCPenney discount outlet. Wow - and,all this time I thought they surfaced in the late 90's ;)
"Kevin, call your mother..." is all Kev heard as he slid downward against the kitchen wall, hands trembling, his eyes scanning the darkened corners of the room. Wiping the sweat from his brow and taking a deep breath, Kev realized that there was a ColecoVison in the den where he retired for the evening to play Lady Bug and all was well.
colecovision FTW HOW 169.99 HOW HOW HOW BULLFK FOR THAT PIECE OF SHT BUY SSBB FOR 69 DOLLARS (wii not included) JUST FOR THIS FKED UP SHT( sorry, mad at the price, forgot that it was 1980s)
Yes, but this technology was new then - new video game market. Nobody had ever seen home video games before those days. It was a different era then...
I never knew how much Coleco cost until now. Of course for the time, $170 and these graphics were pretty groundbreaking but looking back 25+ years $170 is laughable. Ah the 80's, how I miss you so!
Back in those days-the early 80s i was around 16 and had my first job. I was making "good money" back then. Well, compared to 1983 salary for teenagers i was. I was making like around 6 bucks a hour while most other teenagers were lucky to make 3 a hour. I believe 3 a hour was minimum wage back then if im right. Anyways, all that money i was making went in on video games-colecovision, atari, and of course weekend trips to the local video game arcades!
Wow what an awesome commercial, I loved my Coleco, so many days off school playing it, but damn I really want one of those new answering machine thingys, they look hot!
I dont ever remember a game being more than $29.99 for any system back then. The first fifty-dollar game I ever saw was The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo which came out after Atari and Coleco had died out. In 85-86 once Nintendo and Sega crushed the early systems, you could get brand-new Atari games at the stores for $.99
Video games are getting more expensive nowadays. For a new Xbox 360 game, correct me if I'm wrong, it's a whopping $59.99
Who has that kind of money? $50 was alot of money then, and it's still alot of money now. For about $20 or so, I got this cheap-o-matic game system that has old school NES games on it. It's one of those plug-and-play thingamajiggies. I want a Nintendo Wii and I wonder how much the games are.
That was pretty expensive even back then - I think!!!

Yes, but this technology was new then - new video game market. Nobody had ever seen home video games before those days. It was a different era then...

Exactly, and Coleco games looked just like the games in the Arcade. Even had an expansion module so that you can play your Atari 2600 games.

I never knew how much Coleco cost until now. Of course for the time, $170 and these graphics were pretty groundbreaking but looking back 25+ years $170 is laughable. Ah the 80's, how I miss you so!

Wonder if Keven ever called mom, or is he still playing his Colecovision?

Back in those days-the early 80s i was around 16 and had my first job. I was making "good money" back then. Well, compared to 1983 salary for teenagers i was. I was making like around 6 bucks a hour while most other teenagers were lucky to make 3 a hour. I believe 3 a hour was minimum wage back then if im right. Anyways, all that money i was making went in on video games-colecovision, atari, and of course weekend trips to the local video game arcades!
Wonder how much i blew on that crap?

The MW was $3.75 until July 1985 when it was increased to $4.74. In 1997, it was again increased to $5.15.

I remember I was like, 8 and those games were like, 60 bucks, like, remember?
