It has just been announced that Helena Bonham Carter has won the BAFTA Award for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role." No surprise! The Brits did not like "The Fighter." Even Christian Bale was edged out by Geoffrey Rush for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role." As for Bonham Carter, celebrities at awards shows are expected to smile and clap when they lose (see: the other nominees) -- not look noticeably disgruntled.
Anyone who's seen The Fighter knows this win was well deserved.

AcademyAwardsPerson, you may be correct. I cannot read Melissa's mind. All I know is she specifically acknowledged "all the women honred here tonight. Look at all the women they are inviting up here tonight - Hey Jane and Hey Annette.Not bad," If the Golden Globe Producers had given her another 60 seconds, she could have mentioned even more names. Her speech was very gracious whether she was referring to Jane Fona or Jane Lynch. She is a super-star on the rise. Give her credit!

ShannonHBC, please do not use obscene language in public. Do your cursing in private. If you enjoyed "The King's Speech" so much, think of what history would say about King George VI if he had used your vile language during his radio addresses to the British Empire. His wife, the Queen Mother, so brilliantly portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, did not curse in public after King George died. Helena is a classy woman and a great actress. Her fans should be classy as well! Be ashamed!

Melissa, in general, specifically congratulated all of those who had been nominated with her, She pointed out to Jane Fonda and Annette Benning that they should be proud of the young actresses who had been nominated. She acknowledged Amy Adams by name since they were both in "The Fighter. It is a shame that the cameras captured Helena Bonham Carter looking the way she did, but Helena is a great actress and will probably win a BAFTA award. She is a great actress. So is Melissa.

Melissa Leo was perfect in the Fighter, I'm so glad she won the golden globe, but I would've been happy too if Helen Bohnam Carter or Amy Adams won. I hope Amy Adams wins sometime. Her perfromances are outstanding in drama movies. Helen Bohnam Carter dressed terrible, but she is still one of my favorite actors! Her perfromance in the Kings Speech was good too but not Outstanding. Congratulations Melissa Leo!

If ever anyone deserved it... I've seen her since "Homicide", was excited to see her break through with "Frozen River" and yet... didn't recognize her in "The Fighter". Just kept wondering, "who's this excellent unknown actress?" Because she made it so much about the emotional life and not her stunning transformation.

@jamieleeke14 Nah, just excited about winning a GOLDEN GLOBE, and maybe slightly inebriated. Leo is a 50-year old actress who went through almost the entirety of her career largely unacknowledged, so I'd say her speech appropriately expressed her excitement, shock, etc.
As for Bonham Carter, celebrities at awards shows are expected to smile and clap when they lose (see: the other nominees) -- not look noticeably disgruntled.
Anyone who's seen The Fighter knows this win was well deserved.

@seaghost527 Except, Bonham Carter was sat there bored, and looking like virtually everybody else in the audience, bar Mila Kunis and Amy Adams. She didn't expect to win the award, she didn't even think she deserved to be nominated, but Bonham Carter is known to be very humble and kind, so the camera probably caught her at a very awkward moment.

@jamieleeke14 haha i agree. bonham carter is an... eccentric individual (as evidenced by her heinous getup at the globes), so i'm not surprised she was looking like she had been transported to another universe during leo's speech. i don't actually think she's bitter, it just kind of looked that way :/ but yep, i think we read the same interview in which she (bonham carter) stated that her performance in the king's speech wasn't especially great, so i'm sure she's just grateful to be a nominee :)

@dovestone, Amy Adams is a very beautiful woman. So were most of the women at the show. How about Sandra Bullock? How about Anne Hatheway? How about Melissa Leo? How about Angelina Jolie? We could go on all night. The problem is that the award was for a performance by an actress in a supporting role. It is not the Miss America or Miss Universe pagent. Amy was great in her performance. She is very beautiful. She could have won, but she did not. Her day will come.

All five (5) nominees were great, but only one can be chosen for the award. The voters, in my opinion, made the right choice. Melissa was generous to others in her speech, but mentioned only Amy Adams, because they are both in the same picture. She thanked the people who had helped her, starting with her Mom. Congrats!
