Having just tested this, I can authoritatively say that yes, you can safely push against the flat side.
Pushing on the bumpy side results in 1 point of damage.
Naturally, stabbing is instant death.

Tomator was green in almost all the other versions of The Lost Vikings. In this version, Tomator is blue (or some sort of shade of blue).
