I love type R's even though I dont own one, but I did drive both of them before. The new one is more of a love or hate thing because of the styling. but seriously... it doesn't have the feeling of the old type R. Maybe because of the weight and it has too many electronics that takes away all the fun!
I have driven both versions and i can say the old one is slightly faster in a drag race.
However considering the new one looks alot better, has much better equipment, better brakes, nicer shift, nicer steering and is more surefooted, i think the new one overall is a better all round car.
The new one is more mature and the old one has sort of become the new citroen saxo VTR and is a bit chavvy in my eyes.
Most retards in here, fail to see that every FN2 got more than 201 BHP stock. There is not one single FN2 that got 201 BHP or less. Most FN2 got 205 - 208 BHP stock. And thats quite more than the EP3 197 BHP.
Granted it weights 110kg less than the FN2. But those 7 - 11 more BHP than EP3 and higher redline, definitely says alot.

Interestingly tho Jeremy Clarkson was probably the only one who prefered the old model out of all the reviews. Even top gear magazine itself voted it the hot hatch of the year 2007 from the stigs comments.
Ive got the champ white version. Its a great car to drive . I had an ep3 exact same spec as the one chasing the fn2 on here, It was also a great car but I think it looks dated now next to the fn2.

i got a new one last year and had some fun with a older one and it did not pull away from me!!!! on a track its yes prob faster but in the real world on the roads there's nothing in it. and the new one looks better and as for the spoiler who give a shit what you jest passed lol...it dose stop glare from lights behind you which in turn makes it easy er to see the roof of the car behind for that box with blue lights!!

I own an EP3 and it is quicker than an FN2, it handles a bit better too, Iv'e gone head to head with quite a few FN2's always with the same result. But i still like this car a lot and would still have it over most other Hot-Hatch's, its a great car and in some ways it is better than the EP3, it could have been so much better tho, come on Honda get your finger out and give us all what we really want....
I think we all agree, the EP3 is quicker. Its lighter and more of a racing car. The new model is a water downed version that offers more comfort. I choose EP3 :-)

Didn't see much a difference on old tipe-r, maybe the driver wasn't so good.
I've driven both and the old one corners a LOT but ALOT better cause it has full independent rear suspension while the new one has a cheaper to build torsion bar!

there is no diffrence between the two. it,s just who is behind the wheel. that makes the diffrence. drove both and the ep3 felt more on edge with that lift off oversteer but the fn2 felt more stable and gave more confidence on our roads. the ep3 is a track weapon. the fn2 is the perfect hot hatch.everyday driving the fn2 is better but the ep3 feels better for the track because it,s slightly more nimble.
i really do prefer the old type r a lot better when it comes to aesthetics. The new ones look like space cars to me and they have a spoiler blocking your rear view mirror.

Based purely on looks it's open to debate whether or not the EP3 looks dated, everyone has their own opinion. The issue with this promotional video is that Honda are trying to give the impression that the new car outhandles the old car at every turn which just isn't possible. Replacing the double wishbone suspension at the rear with truck like torsion beam in order to gain 150litres of boot space goes against everything "Type R". No wonder Japan said NO...
Its not that I dont like the FN2 or cant offord it, It is a good car, but not a great car. its not slow either, but it is slower than the EP3 and pretty much all of its rivals too, thats not a step forward, its a step backwards, its a Type R and it should have been quicker, Im 45 too and not a chav, I also own an Integra Type R (DC5) and even that has a more forgiving suspension than the FN2, if you call that comfortable then thats up to your intellect I suppose....

Got a rd one with the racing skirts. when its polished up it looks like an alien comapred to most cars on the road. It stands out a mile. As to how it performs, its superb. Amazingly stable and planted and get it in the vtec zone and goes like its arse is on fire. Its got less low down grunt than its other rivals but thats not really what this car is about. Never driven a car around a corner with so much confidenc. For the money bargain!

This car needs to get rid of the back-spoiler (IT ANNOYES THE FCK OUT OF ME), and place it better, give the egine more tourque and a bit more horse power. And it would be great. Now the Ford ST and the golf GTI are better chocie, aswell as better looking.

I own both cars just sold ep3, honestly think the FN2 will be the overall better car when loosened up, not may FN2 will have 30,000 on clock as my ep3 did. The FN2 just 'feels' slower than it is but its pretty much the same. My stock FN2 has been dyno'd at 214bhp. As for rear supsension, its not a step back as it has been setup perfectly (almost) - end of the day both great cars.

Personaly i prefare the old type r firstly for look as the new looks more like a space ship and realisticaly the old type r seemed to be keeping up with the new going around corners and when it wasnt it wasnt to far behind. in a drag the new may beat the old but put both on a country road with a good blend of bends, corners and straights and the old stands a very good chance of winning. i own a 2005 stock model and have beaten a few 07 models. in my eyes all honda have done is replaced the shell
I have the new type R and I drive the old type R, the new type R no need lsd because this car hasn't losts of traction with the new VSA. The VSA works perfectly and the better chasis and suspension do the rest. When you ride the 2 type R you can opine in sure about Type R. The new is more efficent and more conmfortable car.
Sorry, but the FN2 is no Type-R (No LSD, indep.rear suspension, balance is crap with fuel tank in front) But looks nice on the inside. Rear suspension is "60 technology. To me the FN2 is moren like a Type-S. Marketing wise it is a succes. One objective was to get Seat and Golf riders to fall for it, wich it does...An other was to engineer a big trunk, this is why it hase the "60 rear suspension. In Europe we seem to love a big trunk.
The car has nice look's but for me the FD2 CTR please.
but hope that honda bring out an updated version of the new model with the 230 bhp engine from the s2000 and the old inderpendant rear suspension then they would have a great car to match any hot hatch out there.
all on all the new one has better looks sounds better and has a better driving position and better on the long hall, its more refined but still has a good kick when you drop down a gear or two. The old one was more fun to drive through the vtec zone and was brilliant around country lanes in the zone. so having owned both i would have to say i would take the new one,
iv owned both cars and they both have there plus and negative points the old one was a tad quicker once in the vtec zone the new one quicker up to it. the old type r had a cheaper feel to the interior the new one is a joy to sit in. both have bad ride quality id say the old one was slightly better around town the new one better on the motor way, but i think the older type r has better handling on country lanes.
How the hell can the Type R be the hot hatch of the year??? Have they not rested the Mazda 3 MPS or the WRX??? Type R is just a let down. 148 kW @ 7800 rpm and 193 Nm @ 5600 rpm. Now don't tell me this awesome looking but highly underperforming car is torqueless, powerless and rev happy. It needs to rev too hard to achieve anything. Oh and by the way, good luck going up a hill, espcecialy when chasing a WRX or MPS.

Smoother? The FN2 has a pretty stiff ride, and isn't exactly smooth. Worse suspension geometry (using a more dated torsion beam than the EP3's independent), more understeer, more than 100kg heavier
Ptlofts, I haven't driven a Type R but I the specs for it is pretty disapointing... The GTI is pretty good and offers good torque. But personaly I would choose the TDI GT version which offers 22 KW less but 70nm more torque. Whatever you do, just stay away from the Type R, it's torqueless and rev happy.
After some research I reached the same point of view as you do.
The TDI GT sounds a lot atractive and besides is Diesel and not Gasoline waht it will be much better since the price of Gasolines its goins sky high around these parts.
This is the only reviewer to say the new FN2 is better as a driver's car. Funny how he didn't compare lap times? Sorry but the new one is heavier, it has 1bhp more (pathetic I know) and actually losed 2lb ft torque. Yes its more refined, yes its got more toys, but it also has a torsion-beam rear suspension (like a Citroen Saxo) while the older Type-R had fully independant. So in regards to handling, this dude is a bit excitied. The older EP3 is certainly the BETTER driver's car.

1, some people do like that typical engine noise wich the old had more
2, lower noise makes the ride easier to drive on long journeys- eventually an even shorter gear ratio doesn't
3, suspension is smoother, however some may call the old one agile instead of agressive- really depends how you drive it
4, yeah VSA good stuff for idiots or people who do not know how to drive properly in different situations
5, old: lighter= faster. noticeably.

I own an EP3 and it is quicker than an FN2, it handles a bit better too, Iv'e gone head to head with quite a few FN2's always with the same result. But i still like this car a lot and would still have it over most other Hot-Hatch's, its a great car and in some ways it is better than the EP3, it could have been so much better tho, come on Honda get your finger out and give us all what we really want....

Didn't see much a difference on old tipe-r, maybe the driver wasn't so good.
I've driven both and the old one corners a LOT but ALOT better cause it has full independent rear suspension while the new one has a cheaper to build torsion bar!
The new one brakes are bigger, so is the weight!!! And daily driving confort, don't even start it...
And the spoiller in the rear...OMG did they drive it at street when they built it???f

there is no diffrence between the two. it,s just who is behind the wheel. that makes the diffrence. drove both and the ep3 felt more on edge with that lift off oversteer but the fn2 felt more stable and gave more confidence on our roads. the ep3 is a track weapon. the fn2 is the perfect hot hatch.everyday driving the fn2 is better but the ep3 feels better for the track because it,s slightly more nimble.

i really do prefer the old type r a lot better when it comes to aesthetics. The new ones look like space cars to me and they have a spoiler blocking your rear view mirror.

I own an ep3 CTR, and tbh The FN2 is the exact same in the real world.
4 or 5 runs, My mate with an FN2 GT actually pulled about half a car length all the way to 130mph where I started to get past him..
From 0, the ep3 will pull ahead... in the real world, 30mph rolling.. the fn2 will be right by your side for a long time.

Carry on driving your dated EP3's. Leave us older folk to drive the slow, modern, comfortable FN2. Don't spoil the image in 4 or 5 years time though when you can afford to buy the FN2. (when you chavvy EP3 boys have been promoted from tea boy to office junior)

Based purely on looks it's open to debate whether or not the EP3 looks dated, everyone has their own opinion. The issue with this promotional video is that Honda are trying to give the impression that the new car outhandles the old car at every turn which just isn't possible. Replacing the double wishbone suspension at the rear with truck like torsion beam in order to gain 150litres of boot space goes against everything "Type R". No wonder Japan said NO...

Its not that I dont like the FN2 or cant offord it, It is a good car, but not a great car. its not slow either, but it is slower than the EP3 and pretty much all of its rivals too, thats not a step forward, its a step backwards, its a Type R and it should have been quicker, Im 45 too and not a chav, I also own an Integra Type R (DC5) and even that has a more forgiving suspension than the FN2, if you call that comfortable then thats up to your intellect I suppose....

Got a rd one with the racing skirts. when its polished up it looks like an alien comapred to most cars on the road. It stands out a mile. As to how it performs, its superb. Amazingly stable and planted and get it in the vtec zone and goes like its arse is on fire. Its got less low down grunt than its other rivals but thats not really what this car is about. Never driven a car around a corner with so much confidenc. For the money bargain!

This car needs to get rid of the back-spoiler (IT ANNOYES THE FCK OUT OF ME), and place it better, give the egine more tourque and a bit more horse power. And it would be great. Now the Ford ST and the golf GTI are better chocie, aswell as better looking.

I own both cars just sold ep3, honestly think the FN2 will be the overall better car when loosened up, not may FN2 will have 30,000 on clock as my ep3 did. The FN2 just 'feels' slower than it is but its pretty much the same. My stock FN2 has been dyno'd at 214bhp. As for rear supsension, its not a step back as it has been setup perfectly (almost) - end of the day both great cars.

Personaly i prefare the old type r firstly for look as the new looks more like a space ship and realisticaly the old type r seemed to be keeping up with the new going around corners and when it wasnt it wasnt to far behind. in a drag the new may beat the old but put both on a country road with a good blend of bends, corners and straights and the old stands a very good chance of winning. i own a 2005 stock model and have beaten a few 07 models. in my eyes all honda have done is replaced the shell

I have the new type R and I drive the old type R, the new type R no need lsd because this car hasn't losts of traction with the new VSA. The VSA works perfectly and the better chasis and suspension do the rest. When you ride the 2 type R you can opine in sure about Type R. The new is more efficent and more conmfortable car.

Sorry, but the FN2 is no Type-R (No LSD, indep.rear suspension, balance is crap with fuel tank in front) But looks nice on the inside. Rear suspension is "60 technology. To me the FN2 is moren like a Type-S. Marketing wise it is a succes. One objective was to get Seat and Golf riders to fall for it, wich it does...An other was to engineer a big trunk, this is why it hase the "60 rear suspension. In Europe we seem to love a big trunk.
The car has nice look's but for me the FD2 CTR please.

The old one was more fun to drive through the vtec zone and was brilliant around country lanes in the zone. so having owned both i would have to say i would take the new one,

iv owned both cars and they both have there plus and negative points the old one was a tad quicker once in the vtec zone the new one quicker up to it. the old type r had a cheaper feel to the interior the new one is a joy to sit in. both have bad ride quality id say the old one was slightly better around town the new one better on the motor way, but i think the older type r has better handling on country lanes.

How the hell can the Type R be the hot hatch of the year??? Have they not rested the Mazda 3 MPS or the WRX??? Type R is just a let down. 148 kW @ 7800 rpm and 193 Nm @ 5600 rpm. Now don't tell me this awesome looking but highly underperforming car is torqueless, powerless and rev happy. It needs to rev too hard to achieve anything. Oh and by the way, good luck going up a hill, espcecialy when chasing a WRX or MPS.

Smoother? The FN2 has a pretty stiff ride, and isn't exactly smooth. Worse suspension geometry (using a more dated torsion beam than the EP3's independent), more understeer, more than 100kg heavier

Ptlofts, I haven't driven a Type R but I the specs for it is pretty disapointing... The GTI is pretty good and offers good torque. But personaly I would choose the TDI GT version which offers 22 KW less but 70nm more torque. Whatever you do, just stay away from the Type R, it's torqueless and rev happy.

This is the only reviewer to say the new FN2 is better as a driver's car. Funny how he didn't compare lap times? Sorry but the new one is heavier, it has 1bhp more (pathetic I know) and actually losed 2lb ft torque. Yes its more refined, yes its got more toys, but it also has a torsion-beam rear suspension (like a Citroen Saxo) while the older Type-R had fully independant. So in regards to handling, this dude is a bit excitied. The older EP3 is certainly the BETTER driver's car.
