In the USA if anyone blocks access to a handicap parking spot you simply call the police and they'll respond and cite the driver of that vehicle. And if they cannot be located the offending vehicle it TOWED right then and there. End of story.
Unfortunately, this does not address the issue of morons who use handicap placards merely as a means of getting more favorable parking. These low-life's will "borrow" a placard from a friend, family, or even one that belonged to a deceased person
its called being human, we are all flawed, im disabled myself and I do not see why anyone would want to be treated with special care just because of it
Wow you have such a cool accent :D, and I agree I wish people would be a ton more considerate. I was a paraplegic for a year or so and I totally get what you mean.
It is so frustrating when you have to use an aid in order to walk from your car to the store. People do not understand. I too have had to circle the parking lot in order to wait for a handicap parking spot to become free.
Now days I see handicap spaces that are marked for 3 cars but could easy fit 7 standard bays WTF is with that. I understand outboard wheelchair ramps and lifts need room but not 10ft. In-back and in-front. Road yachts don't need 35ft for 1 spot.
im a blue badge holder and ive see my fair share of ignorant, people that use the spaces without having a badge, even if you confront them most of them just are looking for arguments, even some badge holders seem to get about just fine or are using the badges from a disabled person just to get better parking, i feel supermarket chains and street parking attendants should do more to help tackle the problem, even if a permit holder was given obligations to report offenders so they would get fined
Part 2. I got out of the car and knocked on her door, telling her that she couldn't park there (she was straddling both spots). She told me that she was waiting for someone and wasn't going to move. I then told her that she was blocking Michelle's exit from the car and she said she'd only move if Michelle needed to get out. I told her she was breaking the law and I'd get a hold of security. Needless to say, she moved pretty quickly out of there!!!!
I'm a chair user. One time I waited next to this car that took a handicap spot next to the ramp that went into the store. it was the only ramp in so I was blocked out. When the woman came out of the store I told her I hope she didn't have too much trouble walking in. In a very snotty voice and a look to go with it she said "sorry" then got in her car and drove off.
We have had the same thing happen to us. I quit saying anything to these people because most of them want to argue and I don't need the aggravation. I give up, people just don't care.
Like everything, the solution is to reinforce the law by giving tickets. Therefore, people will be more careful where they park. Sadly, the goal was for them to respect (getting to know how other people live) others that need a space closer to the front door of the store.
another problem is people parking in the lines next to the spots that are for wheel chair ramps/lifts and at some stores (walmart) putting there carts in the handicapped spaces, and I am talking about the customers AND employees.
I know much of the blame for this lies with doctors who approve permits without doing any research, they just sign the form. I know many people feel anyone over 50 should automatically get disabled parking. WHY? These spaces have a wheelchair on them for a reason. I would like to see spaces reserved for wheelchair users only, anyone else would be in violation. Disabled parking is being grossly abused and you who are doing it know who you are and I'm sick of hearing about invisible disabilities.
I 100% agree with you! I see so many people being issued disabled parking cards because they are just 'old' they can still walk around town all day unaided though! I would also like to see some disabled spaces for wheelchair users only.
I give up! As long as doctors keep signing for permits and there is no enforcement of disabled parking violations I don't see anything changing. I wish I was more optimistic but it seems it is only getting worse. Sad.
Here in the UK it is getting worse, people are being issued blue badges for 'bad backs' but they can still run around playing football and go on 10 mile marathons! It is ridiculous!
I can hardly ever park in a suitable parking space because 99% of the time they are all taken up. I then have to struggle with a wheelchair in a tiny space which is virtually impossible sometimes.
Things are no different here in the US. I guess people are just too lazy to walk a little further. The police don't have the time to patrol disabled parking and people know this. I think there should be spaces for wheelchair users only, that would do a lot to solve our problems but I don't see that happening any time soon. The police don't care, doctors don't care, the public doesn't care. Sad
@sweety117 i dont use a wheelchair but i am far more disabled than many who use them. many use wheelchairs just to push there granddad around town. not disabled its just easier . a wheelchair is not the sign that someone is very badly disabled , they might just have a pulled hamstring or a plaster cast.
@sweety117 i am very badly disabled but do not use a wheelchair . if you make wheelchair only bays it makes even less bays for people like me to park in . a wheelchair is not a good indication of how badly disabled a person is . i could put my old dad in a chair and use that bay , what good would that do ? its more complicated than it looks
This is subject I could rant on about for hours. My wife lisa has CP and has been in a chair all of her life. We have a ramp to load and unload her power chair and we need 6 or 7 feet on the right side of our van to use the ramp. Well now days it seems everyone is disabled to the point where we find it difficult to find a disabled space. It has become a real problem. I hear a lot of talk about people with "invisible" disabilities such as deafness and Bi-Polar getting placards. That is not right
Then her boss says "No I don't think we can excuse you being late for that(even though SHE was the cause for unlawfully taking the space) Tells my daughter she has to find a way to get there or lose her job. So to recap her jerk boss parks unlawfully in the handicap space. Legitimate handicap person gets towed not violator handicap person not given a break by the inconsiderate boss who just cost her $300..NO justice!!
To follow up on my comment below..to make matters worse..the tow cost $300. Then she realizes that the car parked in the handicap spot (without a placard) BELONGS to her boss. Who lives in the same complex! She calls in to work and says "Hey you parked in my handicapped spot" her boss says "Oh yeah it was late and I didn't want to walk all the way from the street" My daughter explains she was towed and it costs $300. She says she will be late to work.
I just had to comment on this. My daughter is disabled and has a placard to park in a handicapped space. Her apartment complex refuses to assign her a parking space so she has to scramble to get the handicap spot before someone else does. Last week she called me in tears. HER car had been towed. She came home to find the handicap spot taken so parked in another spot. She got towed and the person who is NOT handicapped did not get towed..no justice
In Canada, a lot of handicap parking spots are stupid. There is a wheel chair ramp to the path, from the parking spot! As soon as we park there, the ramp is blocked and unusable. Many times we have to park at the BACK of the parking lot just to keep the ramp clear and hope we get to it before someone else with a permit parks there and blocks it. People who design them should actually try it in a wheelchair after parking to see if it works, or is foolishly stupid.
It's not that they have not concept! I feel they don't really care, or question the integrity of our disease process?? Just how disabled are we?? I have been through some rough blogs , there are actually people that question if we are faking our illness?? yea, or our blindness its society changing to me,me its not us anymore its a society that questions our disease i am sorry. michelle
I do sympathise with the parking space thing. On my fag breaks, I was always getting people come over to say they had to park at the back of the car park over 2 spaces because sports cars were in their bays. All we could do was ask them to call ahead and we'd reserve a space. Hardly fair though, is it? We couldnt tow the offending cars because it was private property.
Although how come you can park on double yellow lines? Last i heard they still block traffic.
Why? Because people SUCK. The worst animal to ever live on earth has no self-respect. So are we suprised to see the same animal show no respect to others.
Print up cards with the laws about disabled parking. GLUE them to the windows of cars parked in violation of the laws.
No group has ever been handed their "natural rights" in this world. You must raise some hell, flip over cop cars, set fire to dumpsters, revolt in the streets. Then the idiots who walk among us will WAKE UP and learn.
I'm a T12 para and I see this happening all the time. What really pisses me off is when wankers park in the wide striped spots that are there to allow us wheelchair users enough room to get ramps out or doors all the way open. And I NEVER see cops ticketing them! It was especially bad on the campus where I went to college in Texas. Needless to say a few fukers got their nice paint jobs keyed.
I totaly agree with bocciafan. I am not disabled myself, but my father was, therefore I have already arguments with colleagues about this, and I can't help myself thinking these peaple should spend a few days in a wheelchair, and see the various problems you disabled peaple have, ie crossing roads, stairs, barriers, etc.
Let alone the fact architects never consider disabled peaple must have access to all parts of any building, and be able to evacuate easily in case of emergency.
Part 2: My mobility does not improve when inside the shop either. I have to regularly sit down after standing for a few minutes or walking as little as 30 meters. If i don't sit down I'll end up collapsing due to the pain. I am constantly on strong opioid pain killers and am too ill to get out of the house some days. When I can get out of the house my mobility is variable so I often need close to door-to-door transport to get to my destination. Disabled space abusers can preventme getting inside
I am a blue-badge holder and need to use disabled parking spaces: I may only be 19 but, have chronic pelvic pain, chronic fatigue and associated problems as the result of medical conditions which mean I need a stick to walk and can't walk far.
I get frequent abuse off people due to my age as they think I trying it on. Yet able-bodied people park in disabled spaces and no one wants to do anything about it. Most misused badges are stolen; they have a black market value of about £1000.
this post has clearly backfired. most of these people are abusing the system. are these badges for disabled people or just for fat lazy people, or maybe its just a coinidence?
It really annoys me when you see people park right outside a shop on the yellow lines, slap the disabled badge on the dash, and run into the store. The system is abused by so many, they need to review it.
Given how many hoops and medical checks via my GP I had to go through to get a blue badge: I can attest they are in no terms easy to acquire.
There are hundreds of stolen and forged-cloned badges going through the black market each year. It's not disabled people's fault; blame the designers for not incorporating a decent anti-fraud design. When gangs are willing to smash the windows of a whole row of cars in disabled bays at a local hospital; theres little badge-holders can do.
yea man, i see it often in Cardiff. And at the store i work, i see it when im on my break outside. It is widely abused by people who are more than capable of walking just 10 metres into the store. Pisses me off, especially when i see elderly/disabled people walking from the other end of the car park coz some tosser has parked in the designated bay!
its not right i agree. but alot of disabled badge holders seem to walk around shopping centres all day but why cant they walk around a car park.. alot of these people seem to milk the system. also alot of the time the only place to park is the disabled many supermarkets have clearly made too many parking bays for disabled and had no consideration for non bade holders..
Every time you come in contact with Police your health is at risk. Why? They radio sets-tetra cause cancer and tumours. Over 1000's in Wales have they're telephone tapped daily by Police, councils and other agencies. They wear pen/head cameras that invade your privacy, this can be said about the stop and search matter. Wales Police this year had 30% yearly cut. Brunstrom also saying ecstasy Safer than aspirin! Well done mam! I think that was emotional and brave of you to tell all us off for parking in the wrong space. I admitt i do it and I fell hert and dreadfuly sorry.
Don't let the bastards get you down sweetheart.I go to Aldi because it's dirt cheap *LOL* and i find the parking easy.Tesco is just to busy but u can order off the net.
no matter how much awareness is created, law or legislation passed regarding this issue, some prick will always violate it n park his/her car in parking space designated for disabled people.
this issue can only be dealt by enforcement. we need wardens who overlook these parking lots n prevent 'others' from parking there.
I am mildly handicapped with weak muscles. I find I am embarassed to admit I have this condition. I do drive but I always park in the "Normal" spaces.
This unbelievable story is true. There was a young coed while I was attending college took her Granmothers handicapped plackard so that when she went to the PE center for socialized exercise where all the jocks were, she could park near the door and have easy access!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can walk the whole store you don't need the closer spot, especially taking a loading zone spot from someone who needs the space for their lift/ramp for their wheelchair.
Unfortunately there will always be idiots in this world who are so stupid they should not be allowed to breath. I get "parked out" of my van all the time. I have had to ask random people to move my van for me, or have the police track the down.
I agree with what you're saying when it comes to abled bodied people parking in the disabled parking spaces. Those violators are very selfish, and hateful people who don't care anything about others! I have asked the candidates that are running for U.S.Presidency, and Senators, House members,to support federal funding for stem cell research, so that I could receive stem cell therapy, so I wouldn't need to park in the disabled parking spaces. If you are interested, go to karena321.
Hi, found your video by chance, could not agree more with your point. This is a link to MSWorld: tinyurlDOTcom/2x386r (replace the DOT with a dot), where a lot of people are talking about an MS drug (Tysabri) that I am waiting for - except I have Crohn's, not MS. I have to wait longer but NIH has already agreed that the government should cover it for MS. The numbers are twice as strong as interferon, and some people are walking who have not walked in years. Good Luck to you.
You are absolutely right. People do not think/won't be told where to park. Unfortunately blue badge users do abuse the system. Yesterday at Tesco's I saw a carely able bodied man and boy leave a disabled woman in the car, in a a disabled parking bay with a blue badge on show. My partner has a blue badge but I refuse to use it unless she is getting out of the car. I just wish all other users followed suit.
In the USA if anyone blocks access to a handicap parking spot you simply call the police and they'll respond and cite the driver of that vehicle. And if they cannot be located the offending vehicle it TOWED right then and there. End of story.
