I just took a look at the 7800 ports of the Nintendo arcade games, and it seems pretty clear to me between palettes, title screens, how the screen is condensed, etc., that Atari basically just bought the NES versions of the arcade games and tried to quietly port those versions to the 7800 rather than the arcade versions themselves. So basically, what we're looking at are halfass ports-of-ports trying to be first-wave NES games. You really are better off just getting the NES versions, I'd think.

This is definitely a great game and a pretty accurate port, although it is much easier than the arcade version due to its simpler, easier to predict patterns. My high score on the 7800 is 680,000. I can barely get 50,000 on a good day on the arcade machine.

Depending on your POV, Mario isn't doing anything wrong. DK was a possible threat, so he just put him in an enclosure just like you do most wild animals in captivity.

Atari was NEVER good on sound quality. Damn, the Colecovision's version of DKJ was about 90% true to the arcade version. The 7800 sounds no better than the 2600. That's one of the reasons this console FAILED!!!!!!

@macuser5555 The reason for that is for sound the 7800 uses the 2600's sound capabilities. Some games have a pokey chip (atari computer's sound chip) installed in the cart for greatly improved sound. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of games that use it. Ball blazers is one and I think there is 1 other one.

@macuser5555 It failed because it was 1984 technology. But aside from that Atari did allow for external soundchips in the cartridges. The problem was that most companies didn't spend the extra money to give their games a closer to 1987/88 level of sound.

Actually there IS a story, In the first classic Donkey Kong he captures Mario's (at that moment) girlfriend Paulina, then Mario saves her and puts Donkey Kong in a cage, Then Donkey Kong's son, Donkey Kong JR. saves him...... Crankey Kong in the newer DK games is actually the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong JR is the new Donkey Kong

You missed part of the story. You see for many years in the Donkey Kong Game Mario would get his girlfriend back only to have to repeat the same events over and over again with her taken away again without them even getting a night together to celebrate her rescue. That is what drove Mario Crazy. My favorite Jr port is on NES with the exception being that terrible crying when he dies.

Think about the Donkey Kong GB game it clearly shows how DK comes back and takes her only now it changes.

I never played the Atari 7800 but I had a Colecovision back in the day.  From what I can tell, this version of DKJ had better graphics than the earlier Coleco version but the sound SUCKED! The sound effects are very 2600 like. No wonder this system couldn't keep up with the NES. :p

I know the true reason why Mario kidnapped DK...

Apparently, before his first game came out, Mario was treating DK as if he was just a plain old circus act. This ticked DK off so much, that he took Mario's girlfriend and climbed up a tower with her (consider it revenge). After Mario rescued his girlfriend, he didn't want DK to annoy him any longer, so he locked him up tight in a cage (consider it RE-revenge). All Mario wanted to do was protect his girlfriend from harm!

The ColecoVision was way ahead of it's time. This (Atari 7800) game was produced five (5) years later as stated by the contributor and still really wasn't improved over the ColecoVision version. Nowadays, 18months is the general life of a computer before obselence. The programmers and developers of ColecoVision deserve MUCH credit for doing what they did with their limited resources. Kudos ColecoVision. I wasted many hours with that system. LOL
