  • I bought a Kalimba from ebay but the steel strips (lammelae) are all similar length and so only allow 7-note scales in little over an octave. I need longer strips to allow a pentatonic scale in two octaves. I'd buy them off ebay if anyone was selling.

  • Nice sound, but the pitch bending seems to be quite unwieldy and interferes with your continuous playing.. I suggest making a mechanism that'd allow you to do the bending with your thumbs.

  • Wow, this really just kinda blows me away at the beautiful sound you've created here and the range I can see with the small number of tines your mbira has.

  • i like this

  • This is possibly the apex of human creativity. Verrrrry cool!

  • that looks far too complex for something so simple XD its really cool though

  • That's a really good idea, you know I honestly think if you'd manufacture little sansula's or kalimba's with this concept you' just might sell em like bread.

  • I have met you if you are from Chicago. But I only remember a conversation about the metal from the street cleaners. My theory was wrong the metal bits are not from street cleaners but are from car window wiper rails falling out after it rains a lot.

  • dude can u show me how u make this i want one so bad how much u chargin to sell em then

  • awesome video would you ever be selling any of these? and for how much?

  • There are 10 new ones being made right now! Estimated date of completion: summer 2011.

They will be going fast at $400 each. Contact Jamoflage@gmail.com for details!

  • Haha lolz this is so cool

  • this video made me fall in love with the kalimba 3 years ago.. thank you

  • haha!!! i have the guitar you got the knobs, pickups, and slidey things off of!!! :DD

  • That's so sick.

  • OMG. You're a genious

  • Dang, I need four-hundred dollars.

  • this item is genius! anything else?

  • this is amazing! I've thought of making something like this before, but this is so effective.

  • this is great!!!amazing sound!!!great work

  • That is a very nice idea of yours, and i like the guitar pickups.

  • GREAT idea!!!!

  • That is the most awesome thing ever!!!

  • you should hook up the pitch bending part to a peddle, for example the peddle from a high hat on a kit that would make it a lot easier to use

  • Would you share how to make one of these?

  • Please, what kind of metal do you use for the keys ?

I'm trying to make one of these, any special size?

    Thanks

  • That's just too cool, man! I'm impressed!

  • hit me up on youtube. i want one.

  • this is awesome! :D

  • That's cool, I remember making a lamp that had pickups and strings. Good work

  • NICE !!! it's that normal guitar pickups ??

  • if your that closed minded about music why do you even listen to it

  • your right because playing notes in a scale in rhythm is definitely not music. And somthing playing notes in definitely not an instrument.

  • Hahahahah Perfect perfect :D

  • Wacky - ever thought of connecting the pitch-bending wheel to a lever and pedal so you can bend the pitch with your foot, keeping both hands free for playing?

  • she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes.... J/K good job guys!

  • That pitch bending wheel is such a cool idea.

  • HOW MUCH?

  • This is very similar to ek tara from india

but thts quites simple construct not so complex n u can play tht wid one fingure we indian are great

  • The ek tara simple because it's a monophonic instrument - you can play only one note at a time. In addition, you can only bend the note upwards.

Here, the instrument is polyphonic. In addition, you can bend the pitch both upwards and downwards. The additional functionality means that the construction must be more complex.

  • Curious :)

  • where does one aqquire long metal strips and rods?

  • jambo you my friend are a pitch bending madman. :D so you sell these?or are they just proto's?

  • Exellent artisanal bent!!! :D

  • beautifully made and played.

i love thumb pianos but this is a step beyond, fantastic! :)

  • i want one of these

is there some way i can buy one of these??

i need it for a recording

  • congrats man !

great addition for the traditional sanza,

I like it very much !!!!

  • sick!

  • why is there a pickup selector on a 1 pickup instrument?

  • because there a 3 pickups?

  • Very nice instrument! Innovation!!!!!

  • I like it, but I'd prefer it if the keys didn't move back and forth.

  • Watch out Robert Randolph!

  • haha, u need 2 people to play this.

  • LOL I have this on my keyboard, it bends anything you want on it, I think you'd like it lol! ;)

  • almost sounds like a lap steel at some of the bend points in the video

  • great job ! inspiring and interesting sounds. keep doing !

  • I want to make one; That's amazing, yet so simple

  • That's pure genius.

I especially love the tapping with sticks on both sides of the keys.

    This inspires me.

    Thanks

  • this is fucking incredible.. i want to buy one and master it..

  • love this! what a great idea

  • Great!

What did you use for the metal tinges?

  • ...garden rake, hacksaw blades, metal band from a rock shipment, metal brush parts that fall off of chicago street sweeper vehicles, any spring steel that is the right shape.

  • @Jamoflage I tried road-sweeping brushes before but they were too thin and flexible to make clear sustained tones -although they did produce a good 'plucked spring' sound. It's seems strange that suitable strips are so hard to come by.

  • Create a foot pedal. Connect the foot pedal to the pitch bend wheel with some sort of belt/bike chain. Make it 200% more practical. Make more. Sell them to me. Collect a profit. Rule the world.

  • now you can go a'thumbin' across the land!

  • I love the sound, and it is so well-built.

  • A little while ago I had the same idea pop into my head! With rollers and everything! I'm not a builder of anything so it's awesome to see someone did this and did it so well!

  • I absolutely love the sound!

I wonder if there would be any advantage to making the pitch bend controllable with a foot pedal so you could continue picking two handed.

  • ...yeah I wanted to do that too, but got only as far as the string looped around my feet which changed the pitch by turning the spool when I moved my feet up and down,(seen somewhere in the middle of the video) Im sure there could be a better foot pedal system somehow.

  • @Jamoflage -- I know this is a reply to a comment that is a year old, but I have a good idea: you could use a hi-hat pedal and fix the instrument to it! It will work! I love the sound!

  • Very nice. How long did it take you to design/create this instrument?

  • ...Thanks, I made this one in about a month, taking my time and figuring out certain design elements, the first model was much simpler with one pickup and no knobs, it took about a year of thinking and planning in my head before I made it.

  • wow thats amazing
