  • Everyone stop doing that awful Moses Hogan version. Now.

  • @axecalibore Is that what this is? I can't find a version like the one my alma mater did almost 14 years ago. I love that arrangement so much more.

  • Alto is amazing but this is so not balanced.

  • This is a Spiritual not Gospel.

  • 2:30...best part of the song. Bring it in basses..=)

  • That alto is a total BOSS!

  • Man I really miss singing in Mads! This was a fun year, and I loved singing this song!

  • For the bass split, the bass with the high split is a bit too loud. Need to remember that the higher the part, the quieter it can be. He could be half that loud and he'd be right in balance.

That said, this is really, really good!

  • It's a little slow... kinda drags...

  • i did this song in high school and it was one of the easiest pieces we learned how to do a capella.

  • My high school is singing a version like this on monday for a choir concert. i'm pretty excited! :) its this tempo and everything. this is a great version! :)

  • this is great lol it r=sounds as if there's only 1 alto...iLove that!! .but its written by an African American composer so remember that the words are pronouced with more dialect than correct grammer..

  • I have never heard it done this way. This was fabulous!

  • i sang it chior acapella with 150 people in chior and did this song for comition and one 1st place...and it sounded awsome!

  • This song is very hard to sing so with that said, I think you all did a great job.

  • i know!!! hell yea to the altos!

  • this is a little too fast. but ive herd some that are way to slow... u gotta find the happy medium and get that big sound behind it!

  • this song is a spiritual, not gospel.. first things first, know the style.

  • I can't understand your criticism - this song is pretty difficult to sing, you have to consider that these boys and girls are only about 25 years old and only 7-8 people...anyway I think the sound is clear, gives me goosebumps, and most of the time they strike the right notes.

  • This song is bad a could not even hear and i put the song higher I liked the song when my teacher told my about it!! these people can not sing

  • no qualms from me, a little fast and some moments when the baritone part is exposed. Very characteristic tone by the ladies. Nicely done!

  • my choir is singing it slower and.. i like it so much better like that. this sounds really. iono.. creepy and..and you don't really get its meaning when its sung this way..

  • my choirs singing this but were goin much slower, no offense but i like it slower. the tenors were good

  • That 2nd Alto was great! All together great job!

  • my highschool choir has to sing this

  • it lacks character. i don't like the diction too..

  • is this 1993 lol

  • LMAOOOO!

  • i just love it :O

  • well it was faster when i sang it my freshman year. but it sounds great for them to be a group of this size

  • Isn't this song supposed to be sung in a much much faster tempo? c".b

  • Derby I think the Diction was fine. I believe this is a great display of this song. Only thing I can say the girls lack energy. I do not feel a forward motion, somehow if it was flat it didnt sound as if it were. Also the girls sing quite brightly

  • You all sounded decent but it sounds (no not high school level) but more middle school-like you would sound more advancd if you darken the tone and instead of saying "lordy in some parts" say "lawdy" like its written

  • Just a few words: not so diction-y and proper

  • The high part isn't THAT hard... As long as you don't have crappy posture, it's pretty easy, really.

  • i love the altos voice!! you go girl.

  • the tenors have way too nazely voices

  • wow :D you guys sound just like the choir in my school when you sing this XD

  • your vowels are very bright. it makes it sound like a high school choir. but the intonation is excellent! great job guys! and girls! lol

  • im singing this song for chorus but its a kinda different versoin but i love it

  • we are singing this in my chorus class but it's adv. and we sing it totally diff. through!!!

  • this was really good it just doesnt sound like college voices ... more like high school kids

  • we r singing this song in mii chorus class but it is not this advanced...i am in middle school and i love this song!!!

  • Awesome - Loved singing this piece!! Alto 2 on the right there.. behind the whole time though.

  • omg...this gives me hope...i havent seend a vid yet with a madrigal arrangement...so this gives me faith that my choir will be able to pull it of..thank you for that...u guys are awsome

  • Just for the record, there are no tenors singing at 2:05. The entire passage there is SAB.

  • alright then, thankyou.

  • So the bass splits? Well it was the bass, then... at "Elijah rock", had some interval and placement issues. Otherwise its a good sound. I like to see small groups that sound big. Didn't like the 2.52, though; it's bit mechanical. But again, good sound.

  • @Muffynz it sounds like there is tenors. when my school perfomed it it was SATB

  • @Muffynz Im singing this is Honor Choir Oklahoma....THIS IS NICE!!

  • thats my name

  • for a song that hard they sound really good!

  • its too slow... due to it there are some lines that are flats and some are not on the beat

  • very robotic

  • Do you have any idea how difficult this song can be to learn? Seriously...

  • for a college, your sound is very young.

what i mean is that your voices are spread and there are barely any good vowels.

I'm in a high school choir and we are singing this as well. In this song, if you have spread i and e vowels, it sounds very off. If you want to see what i mean, watch "Elijah Rock" by Everglades High School Concert Choir

  • Actually, since this is a gospel song, their styling and vowels are perfectly appropriate. Operatic vowels are fine in their place, but not appropriate for all music. Listening to your choir's version, the style sounds very out of place for a gospel song.

Also, please remember that while your choir is good for a high school group, this is of a college madrigal group, taught by a college professor who really knows what he's doing. Don't forget that you still have more to learn. :]

  • Lyrical! Much better than larger groups!

  • I really don't like when choirs hold books like that, it looks so unprofessional. They did a good job, I don't know what the issue was but they can't blend..

  • Your voices are too young for this. Altos are making too much of an effort to get to the low notes.

  • i think their voices are just fine! they did a great job! I sang this song in high school but a way different version. And they did a much better job than my choir so dont say they are too young its not fair give them some credit

  • There will always be someone better. You are being unfair not allowing me to state my opinion, and yes, I believe their voices are too young for this.

  • I don't know why you think they are too young to sing this....what are they supposed to sing....?

  • That depends on how old they are and the number of members in each voice (SATB) in the choir.

  • I think they did well on this for any age choir. The altos were very good.

  • You are entitled to your opinion and I respect it, but after listening to it for the 3rd time, they still do not convince me. As they are "madrigal" singers, maybe they are singing it as a madrigal, which to me is not the correct way to approach this piece and maybe giving them a "child-like" sound. Again, it´s my humble opinion.

  • We are all entitled to our own opinions and to be able to state them here on you tube. My opinion is that their voices sound healthy, they are a very musical bunch of young people that sing very expressively. I don't expect a highschool madgrial group or any highschool group to sound professional. I am overjoyed at their commitment to learning and performing and I think they sound lovely.

  • So they are young! No doubt they are musical and a great bunch. I encourage this group to continue their commitment to learning and performing. Good luck.

  • Yes, indeed ,,,,they are young and they sounded lovely, talented, nusically intelligent and the voices sound healthy and exactly how they should sound at the highschool age.

  • But we are a college chorus, not a high school chorus.

  • We're a college vocal ensemble and, sadly, we don't do many madrigals. However, the vocal range is great. The youngest female here is 15, the oldest 60 something. The youngest male 19 and the oldest also 60 something.

  • this song is chilling live

  • Great job.. especially 1st sopranos...I loved singing that part.

Sometimes it was really chopping and make it darker. I agree with zray23... not tring to sound racial but yes it is negro spirtual.

  • Tenors.. great Hallelujah Lord!

  • Alto.. take it easy, please.

  • Yeah i hear wat u mean

  • hmm goog but some of your men need to open their mouths

  • I can tell you who those would be...

  • Very nicely done.

  • good talent but because this is such a small group you guys have to learn to blend a lot better

  • LOL THIS SONG ROX!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree with Cirqueish, this was just... really intense. You guys have a lot of talent.

  • I thought this sounded absolutely amazing. My high school Concert Choir sang this and I think you guys have just as much if not more intensity as us with about 50 less people.

    I'm very impressed.

  • As far as diction goes? Have a look at the Moses Hogan Quartet doing this - you could slit your wrists on their diction.

  • This was very well done.

However they sounded a bit childish they all need to round out their words and make the sound darker.

It would make this 100times better if they did that the notes are there.

Also its a negro spiritual you need to back off the whole perfect diction and have fun with it.. it is a very fun song to perform

  • the song is darker...

    although it's a great performance

  • This was great!!!

  • "comin'" at the end didn't have the same togetherness as the rest of the song. also the "lord" at the very end could have used more crescendo.

over all very well done, especially for so few people.

  • I agree...2nd Alto by the Camera...WOW!!!!

  • koolio..

  • whomever is singing alto 2 ...you should just know that your amazing!, keep rocking out!

  • Definitely Shannyn...you can hear her singing "Una Voce Poco Fa", also under Muffynz videos.

  • Good altos. More exercise of the chest voice will surely do you good.

Also, the tenors should try to make the vowels rounder. =)

Overall, it's good-I mean, for 17 people? That's a good performance. There were stick-outs, yes, but that's natural, seeing that you're just a handful of people. =)

  • Dang you guys are good!!!

  • whoa my choir cant sing this theyre too good

  • This song is the best. My concert chior is doing it, it is so much fun for a soprano

  • wow that was amazing for only 17 people!!

  • it sounds so much better with a full choir. that's mine was: great energy and everything.

this was good though! no lie.

  • this needs energy! work those consonants please!

  • I think personally the girls did amazing with their vowels... but the guys are a little to open. like instead of ooo its more like uuu

  • we're singingt the same version of this song

the tenor 1 part after the bass part "hes a liar" always makes me laugh when our tenors do it because its so high

  • it's not a dress. -_-

  • I love this song! People sing about ME! ;-D

  • were singing a simpler version of this

  • Ah, how pretty. And fun. And enjoyable to listen to. Rock on, Elijah. And bring your friend Elisha along.

  • My Choir is singing another version of that.

  • I love you guys performing this, I was watching from the lobby. I'm in the night chorus, I sang in the other parts of this concert :)

  • dude my choir is singing this song too :).

You have some good altos. Tenors could use some work :P

  • Hey, I'm one of those tenors. :p

  • >_<

  • yay! I'm one of the altos! :-)
