For the bass split, the bass with the high split is a bit too loud. Need to remember that the higher the part, the quieter it can be. He could be half that loud and he'd be right in balance.
My high school is singing a version like this on monday for a choir concert. i'm pretty excited! :) its this tempo and everything. this is a great version! :)
this is great lol it r=sounds as if there's only 1 alto...iLove that!! .but its written by an African American composer so remember that the words are pronouced with more dialect than correct grammer..
I can't understand your criticism - this song is pretty difficult to sing, you have to consider that these boys and girls are only about 25 years old and only 7-8 people...anyway I think the sound is clear, gives me goosebumps, and most of the time they strike the right notes.
my choir is singing it slower and.. i like it so much better like that. this sounds really. iono.. creepy and..and you don't really get its meaning when its sung this way..
Derby I think the Diction was fine. I believe this is a great display of this song. Only thing I can say the girls lack energy. I do not feel a forward motion, somehow if it was flat it didnt sound as if it were. Also the girls sing quite brightly
You all sounded decent but it sounds (no not high school level) but more middle school-like you would sound more advancd if you darken the tone and instead of saying "lordy in some parts" say "lawdy" like its written
omg...this gives me hope...i havent seend a vid yet with a madrigal arrangement...so this gives me faith that my choir will be able to pull it of..thank you for that...u guys are awsome
So the bass splits? Well it was the bass, then... at "Elijah rock", had some interval and placement issues. Otherwise its a good sound. I like to see small groups that sound big. Didn't like the 2.52, though; it's bit mechanical. But again, good sound.
what i mean is that your voices are spread and there are barely any good vowels.
I'm in a high school choir and we are singing this as well. In this song, if you have spread i and e vowels, it sounds very off. If you want to see what i mean, watch "Elijah Rock" by Everglades High School Concert Choir
Actually, since this is a gospel song, their styling and vowels are perfectly appropriate. Operatic vowels are fine in their place, but not appropriate for all music. Listening to your choir's version, the style sounds very out of place for a gospel song.
Also, please remember that while your choir is good for a high school group, this is of a college madrigal group, taught by a college professor who really knows what he's doing. Don't forget that you still have more to learn. :]
I really don't like when choirs hold books like that, it looks so unprofessional. They did a good job, I don't know what the issue was but they can't blend..
i think their voices are just fine! they did a great job! I sang this song in high school but a way different version. And they did a much better job than my choir so dont say they are too young its not fair give them some credit
There will always be someone better. You are being unfair not allowing me to state my opinion, and yes, I believe their voices are too young for this.
You are entitled to your opinion and I respect it, but after listening to it for the 3rd time, they still do not convince me. As they are "madrigal" singers, maybe they are singing it as a madrigal, which to me is not the correct way to approach this piece and maybe giving them a "child-like" sound. Again, it´s my humble opinion.
We are all entitled to our own opinions and to be able to state them here on you tube. My opinion is that their voices sound healthy, they are a very musical bunch of young people that sing very expressively. I don't expect a highschool madgrial group or any highschool group to sound professional. I am overjoyed at their commitment to learning and performing and I think they sound lovely.
So they are young! No doubt they are musical and a great bunch. I encourage this group to continue their commitment to learning and performing. Good luck.
Yes, indeed ,,,,they are young and they sounded lovely, talented, nusically intelligent and the voices sound healthy and exactly how they should sound at the highschool age.
We're a college vocal ensemble and, sadly, we don't do many madrigals. However, the vocal range is great. The youngest female here is 15, the oldest 60 something. The youngest male 19 and the oldest also 60 something.
I thought this sounded absolutely amazing. My high school Concert Choir sang this and I think you guys have just as much if not more intensity as us with about 50 less people.
Good altos. More exercise of the chest voice will surely do you good.
Also, the tenors should try to make the vowels rounder. =)
Overall, it's good-I mean, for 17 people? That's a good performance. There were stick-outs, yes, but that's natural, seeing that you're just a handful of people. =)
Everyone stop doing that awful Moses Hogan version. Now.

I don't know why you think they are too young to sing this....what are they supposed to sing....?
DivaDeb1234 3 years ago
That depends on how old they are and the number of members in each voice (SATB) in the choir.
operachic74 3 years ago
I think they did well on this for any age choir. The altos were very good.

As far as diction goes? Have a look at the Moses Hogan Quartet doing this - you could slit your wrists on their diction.
devoff 4 years ago
This was very well done.
However they sounded a bit childish they all need to round out their words and make the sound darker.
It would make this 100times better if they did that the notes are there.
Also its a negro spiritual you need to back off the whole perfect diction and have fun with it.. it is a very fun song to perform
