  • This was originally a short story that was written by Shirley Jackson in 1948 and first published in "The New Yorker." She said she wrote it for no other purpose than ..."to shock the story's readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives."

  • @henon65 What happened to the whole version of the this video. I teach this in middle shcool and I show this to my class. It is a very helpful visual aid for difficult learners. I would like to know where I can get the whole video if not here any more.

  • @yjcoleman

Ah! Maybe you can tell us why they showed this to my class? Visual aid to learn what?

    Thnx

  • @henon65 and to Expose what goes on in the entertainment industry.

    South Park wasn't bullshittin.

  • It is about ethics and about beliefs. How far would someone go to follow what they where raised to do. This was merely a belief that they would have a better harvest if they sacrificed a person. This belief was bred on tradition. I don't agree with this but it is a valid point.

  • I'm doing a report on this story tomorrow. The analyzation of the story--the diction, tone, syntax, and literary devices of the piece. It's sort of aggravating though... even though I'm in high school, I don't think it's a very good story to teach younger children. My dad told me that he read this when he was in elementary and middle school. High school is alright, but it still has a very negative impact on people. It really doesn't serve any purpose other than thoughtful conversations.

  • and yes, I know that the story has deeper meanings. but that's what I meant by thoughtful conversations. This story doesn't (or rather it shouldn't) leave you with good feelings. It makes you think, but it can probably scar younger children if you ask me. Nightmares, scary thoughts and sudden phobias could probably result from reading things like this at young ages. I enjoyed the story personally, but I don't see how we're still teaching this to younger kids in public schools.

  • The story is meant to show how we are so accepting of violence until it becomes personal.

  • Welp, we've gone straight to Hell then. There is absolutely no hope left for us.

  • this movie is fucked they stone you if your name is picked in the lottery bad way to go out

  • i wonder if the 2 guys running the show...if their names were in the lottery drawing

  • what yr was this made?

  • Yeah I thought it was F'ed up that they made us watch this in school...I can't remember what grade,...maybe early jr. high school. I don't have kids yet but I would not want the public school that I pay taxes for to show them this sick video. It should be for an older crowd and there needs to be a warning before they just put it on. I can't even remember what class we watched it in,...maybe english?

  • yes i read this in either jr high or high school. it kinda scarred me...

  • How does Jackson lull the reader into false sense of security initially, and build suspense in this classic tale of unquestioning adherence to a primitive fertility rite?

  • this movie mad me very mad in class. we also watched the full length lifetime movie which was even worse. i just didn't like the whole idea of it.

i'm a freshman and it was not something i would recommend showing to younger kids. i certainly didn't enjoy it.

  • It's very disturbing isn't it? The message behind the story is that human beings will never let traditions die no matter how rediculous and barbaric they are. Shirley Jackson was a great writer. I suggest you read the book of her short stories. It's called The Lottery and Other Stories.

  • @dylanfan1969 thx for suggestion even if it was 2 years ago

Love this Story and im looking forward for more.

  • Does anyone know if there is the newer version of The Lottery anywhere?

  • Netflix

  • what is that? a website?

  • You never heard of Neflix? You don`t know what your missing! It is a website you can join and order movies thru the mail. You make a list, the movie arrives in the mail, and you send it back. No late fees or due dates. They have everything! My plan is $ 17.00 a month to have 3 movies at a time. Check it out. This sounds like a commercial!

  • I hate this story. It made me sick and I was so angry that we watched the video.

  • that is the point.

  • We're reading the story in high school now

  • lol we are too

  • we read this last week im in middle school

  • i read the short story before this and it freaked me out im 13

  • We were shown this movie in school in 4th or 5th grade too, and it upset me so much! The scenes are still vivid in my mind, 30+ years later!

  • Wow! I am surprised they are still showing this video in schools. I saw this movie, not in high school, but in the 70's when I was in 4th or 5th grade. To this day I still remember most of the movie as it had a pretty shocking affect on my 9 or 10 year old mind.

  • I can't belive this was shown in public school in America. I still remember this.

  • the new south park episode lol

  • I remember this! We did the play when I was in high school. "Joe Summers is a comin' it won't be long now." That was my line LOL

  • Another good one is "The Red Balloon". These are movies all children should watch eventually.

  • noy children, teenagers

  • not*

  • I remember this

  • in school im playing the part of tessie were doing a tv show thingy it's gay and so im trying to look for some clothing to wear so ty for putting this vid up it's help!

  • I haven't seen this since I was in school, but I seem to remember drawing parallels between The Lottery and the military draft. Can anyone else see any comparisons? I thought the film was timely considering the Vietnam war. Am I wrong? I haven't seen the film or read the story in about 35 yrs.!

  • I heard they made a sequel that involves the Power Ball.

    No?

How about a remake involving scratch-offs? Ouch! Painful!!!!

  • @stratman123 Do u even know what this movie is about? And how the society in this movie differs from the society we live in today??

  • @msbeanie1987

It's obivous that my dry sense of humor isn't appreciated by everyone, but enough do to make it the top-rated comment.

  • @stratman123 no one cares.......... you apparently don't have an answer because instead of being a wise ass, you would of just answered the question.

  • @msbeanie1987

Your question sounds like it was lifted from an 8th grade social studies quiz.

Please--no more responses wanted or needed.

  • where can i find sum answers to the short story why they did the things in nthe story, and where can i find the WHOLE movie?

  • Why don't all of you guys look up at his description if you want to watch the whole thing? Jeez!

  • We read, in the university(Turkey), this popular and sad story of Shirley Jackson's. It's certainly a masterpiece and great.

  • omg we read this and watched the movie in class the other day and we did a lottery of our own before we read it and noone knew wat it ment lol dont worry, noone was killed

  • Also hoping the whole movie is put up Even in pieces if need be.

  • Oh snap I saw this movie yesterday in my Civics class.

  • I watched this in my AVID class,

they left out the best part when they kill Tessi!

  • could you please put the rest of the movie?

  • Check out the video clip of 'Man That You Fear' by Marilyn Manson. It very much resembles this short movie.

  • Well, the short-story by Shirley Jackson WAS the inspiration for his video.

  • I want to see the whole thing again too. I watched it back in 9th grade English back in the mid 80's. Would LOVE to see the whole thing again. Did anyone find the whole thing yet?

  • I'm with everyone else here - would love to see the whole thing (I saw it in school YEARS ago), or at least know where to buy it! Any info available??
