People who have lost loved ones, people who fear death, people who want to believe that death is not the end, they are easily persuaded into believing that souls exist. Why is it that they are more likely to believe in it, and people like doctors and biologists, who actually study humans and their anatomy, have never found a soul? How is the non-physical attached to the physical? When do we get the soul? Do animals have souls? Do twins share one? It raises more questions than it answers.

Your questions: The non-physical is attached by the 'silver chord'. If that is severed, the physical body cannot live. We get the soul either at inception or at birth, there is some disagreement about this. Animals have souls, but they do not last forever as do human souls. Twins each have their own souls. Keep looking into this subject.
