most armors are really only meant to with stand a slashing or cutting motion when it gets stabbed is when you really start to have a problem cause a stab motion can penetrate armor easier.
@iSMITH4life actually, no, maile (chain mail to most people) was very strong and very successful, i.e it was used from around 5-400bc to about 1600AD it was also used in japan with great success.
there are plenty of anecdotes of spears or arrows failing to kill maile armed men.
thats why scales were made the way they were and its why lamellar is done the opposite way, with the bottom row being the uppermost row, this means an attack from BELOW will be deflected more seasily, meaning an attack from above is likely to find that gap between the rows and kill you, why? because lamellar was mostly worn by cavalry. whoes main threat was maybe infantry weapons or , occasionally other cavalrymen,
scale is mostly an infantry armour, it deflects downward shots.
if you look at MOST armours, for infantry especially, youll find that they are designed to deflect a blow downwards or just away from you, scale armour the roman lorica segmentata, alot of helmet designs also have extra protection to the shoulders,
while you are right, a thrust from below can bypass your armour and find chinks, but a thrust from below, especially with a long sword, is difficult to pull off in a battle situation, your most common threat was strikes from above.
Lol, me and mine have brains? you know what you doing that's when is comes to the scale mail and hitting each other, but don't say you're smart than talk like that.
@Wombleonastick YOU'RE the fucking idiot. Use common sense. Oh! maybe the fact that I didn't break any bones goes to show you that, hey, we aren't stupid enough to hit hard enough to break a fucking bone. Not to mention the fact that to break a rib, he would have to slam the machete into my chest with all his might, which, oho! isn't something we were stupid enough to try. Maybe you and YOUR friends are dumb enough to try such a thing, but oh shit! me and mine have brains.
if you were stabbed in an upward motion instead of straight in and got the knife under the scales, i can guarantee you'd be on a trip to the emergency room. this stuff is not stab proof and it bugs me when people think it is
@ishouldplayzelda sorry Mr. scale mail expert. I'll be sure to not do that, yet again, the next time I do this. Oh yeah, can I also call you Mr. Obvious? No shit it wouldn't protect me then. Probably the reason we didn't try it that way, don't you think? Go be a know-it-all somewhere else. We were just having fun screwing around.
@moghadamr okay fine, i will be a know-it-all haha. what you need is some good double layer Lamellar. that stuff would far better than any mail at preventing stab wounds
@moghadamr hahaha. Thankfully I think they were trying to test what it *did* protect and not what it didn't. I mean a Kevlar vest doesn't protect from AP rounds, toothpicks aren't edible, and nails don't make good pillows, but you don't see people testing for that, because people only test for intended purposes, not stuff they know will fail. "man, u didn't try to fail! u sux!" That's what you said to these guys, then you called *them* stupid. :P
@ishouldplayzelda 1. For that to happen, he'd have to be stabbing himself at like an 80 degree angle, and it would have to be well aimed, random slashes will be deflected
2. I'm sure that someone who MADE scale mail knows much more than you, so go fuck yourself.
Under ALL armor in the medieval period had PADDING under it. Get some canvas and fiberfill layers and sandwich them between the canvas. Sew to shape to fit under armor. You can get hit by a two-hander and not even feel it(aside from being knocked on your ass).
There was an ROTC kid who wanted to see if the flack jacket he had on would stop a knife. No one woud stab him hard enough while he was wearing it to give it a real test so he secured the knife to the gound point up and fell on it from about 3 feet. The knife went though the vest and killed him.
@moghadamr wait you just "found" it or you found it in a store of some kind? lol because i wish i could just be walking along and " find" scalemail laying around lmao just wondering, i want to make scale mail but i want to find a website that sells lots of them for cheap
@Himotary i dont know if anyone answered your question and i know its been 6 months but yes it would hurt, he isnt wearing the proper padding underneath in this video
@pdicestunnerz yes i noticed that now XD this was about 6 months ago, i have studied many forms of armor since then :) but still, thanks for the comment :)
@pdicestunnerz don't worry bro! making chainmaille is supercheap! and you can spread out the costs over the time it takes to make it :) as far as tools go, you just need some pliers :)
is the weakness of scalemail, a bottom to upward like slash? (Going underneath the scales)
