  • is the weakness of scalemail, a bottom to upward like slash? (Going underneath the scales)

  • most armors are really only meant to with stand a slashing or cutting motion when it gets stabbed is when you really start to have a problem cause a stab motion can penetrate armor easier.

  • @iSMITH4life actually, no, maile (chain mail to most people) was very strong and very successful, i.e it was used from around 5-400bc to about 1600AD it was also used in japan with great success.

there are plenty of anecdotes of spears or arrows failing to kill maile armed men.

  • @elgostine im not saying it wasnt used commonly but it can still be breached easier than a full plate.

  • sounds and looks like you did a good job on the scales, just hope your enemy doesn't stab upward

  • @gangrail ..

thats why scales were made the way they were and its why lamellar is done the opposite way, with the bottom row being the uppermost row, this means an attack from BELOW will be deflected more seasily, meaning an attack from above is likely to find that gap between the rows and kill you, why? because lamellar was mostly worn by cavalry. whoes main threat was maybe infantry weapons or , occasionally other cavalrymen,

scale is mostly an infantry armour, it deflects downward shots.

  • @gangrail

if you look at MOST armours, for infantry especially, youll find that they are designed to deflect a blow downwards or just away from you, scale armour the roman lorica segmentata, alot of helmet designs also have extra protection to the shoulders,

while you are right, a thrust from below can bypass your armour and find chinks, but a thrust from below, especially with a long sword, is difficult to pull off in a battle situation, your most common threat was strikes from above.

  • Dharmanova it is katana not catana

  • lolz woops missed

  • Next try a Japanese catana...no wait, let me try it for you :-))

  • @dharmanova Katana*

  • its like the metal thing failed and u died.

  • aha...u knw..i was secretly hoping something would go wrong...

  • Oh gosh this was great.

I actually split open some rings stabbing with a dagger once.

    Scales and rings were SS.

  • Thats some cool stuff bro. Did you make it or buy it?

  • *upward, and no, it is normal chain mail underneath with the scales all attached to it.

  • i think a upwerd stab would kill him

  • plate is alot better

  • @WilsonSteinberg yeah, but plate armor is really expensive...and it gets hot after a while.

  • hey! nice scale armour now put some plate armour ontop of that then crossbows woudent be able to kill knights anymore ( i think :O)

  • missss fuck

  • Nice mail! Really good video.

  • @WilsonSteinberg stronger but heavier

  • slashes, misses, uhhhh.... wheres your head??? lol, great armor though.

  • Lol, me and mine have brains? you know what you doing that's when is comes to the scale mail and hitting each other, but don't say you're smart than talk like that.

  • @biggestidiotever Are you serious? Wanna re-read your comment? lol moron.

  • @Wombleonastick YOU'RE the fucking idiot. Use common sense. Oh! maybe the fact that I didn't break any bones goes to show you that, hey, we aren't stupid enough to hit hard enough to break a fucking bone. Not to mention the fact that to break a rib, he would have to slam the machete into my chest with all his might, which, oho! isn't something we were stupid enough to try. Maybe you and YOUR friends are dumb enough to try such a thing, but oh shit! me and mine have brains.

  • The guy with the scales is a fucking idiot, doesn't he realize that a stabbing weapon can break your ribs without penetrating?

    Enjoy your trip to a&e

  • if you were stabbed in an upward motion instead of straight in and got the knife under the scales, i can guarantee you'd be on a trip to the emergency room. this stuff is not stab proof and it bugs me when people think it is

  • @ishouldplayzelda sorry Mr. scale mail expert. I'll be sure to not do that, yet again, the next time I do this. Oh yeah, can I also call you Mr. Obvious? No shit it wouldn't protect me then. Probably the reason we didn't try it that way, don't you think? Go be a know-it-all somewhere else. We were just having fun screwing around.

  • @moghadamr okay fine, i will be a know-it-all haha. what you need is some good double layer Lamellar. that stuff would far better than any mail at preventing stab wounds

  • @moghadamr hahaha. Thankfully I think they were trying to test what it *did* protect and not what it didn't. I mean a Kevlar vest doesn't protect from AP rounds, toothpicks aren't edible, and nails don't make good pillows, but you don't see people testing for that, because people only test for intended purposes, not stuff they know will fail. "man, u didn't try to fail! u sux!" That's what you said to these guys, then you called *them* stupid. :P

  • @ishouldplayzelda 1. For that to happen, he'd have to be stabbing himself at like an 80 degree angle, and it would have to be well aimed, random slashes will be deflected

    2. I'm sure that someone who MADE scale mail knows much more than you, so go fuck yourself.

  • @ishouldplayzelda duh buddy

  • Put on scale mail: become a superhero

  • Under ALL armor in the medieval period had PADDING under it. Get some canvas and fiberfill layers and sandwich them between the canvas. Sew to shape to fit under armor. You can get hit by a two-hander and not even feel it(aside from being knocked on your ass).

  • Doctor in emergency room, " You were doing what when this happened ?"

  • @lunhil12 haha ive been there before. blew my hand up with a dry ice bomb. told them i dropped a knife on it...

  • @moghadamr LMFAO!!! your not to smart. jokes. but uhh, why would you have a dry ice bomb exactly?

  • emo

  • There was an ROTC kid who wanted to see if the flack jacket he had on would stop a knife. No one woud stab him hard enough while he was wearing it to give it a real test so he secured the knife to the gound point up and fell on it from about 3 feet. The knife went though the vest and killed him.

  • @kraigthorne what a fucking idiot.

  • Hi! Where do you get the scales?

  • @luke4r friend in the dorms i was living in had made it...

  • looks like a metal bra

  • Nice I must say.

  • i think he need some leather or other material under to soften off the mail on the inside

  • Lulz have been had my friend. Thank you.

  • think he needs some leather or cloth below for impact absourbation, while the chainmail protects from pirceing or and deflects

  • you should not have a machete! :)

  • Haha we found some scalemail and we just wanted to see if it would actually work.

  • @moghadamr wait you just "found" it or you found it in a store of some kind? lol because i wish i could just be walking along and " find" scalemail laying around lmao just wondering, i want to make scale mail but i want to find a website that sells lots of them for cheap

  • what first gave you the idea to try this?

  • @Himotary surprisingly, yes, it does hurt pretty bad. We were actually using some pretty decent force. And i had absolutely no padding on.

  • does it rly hurt that much? :S

  • @Himotary i dont know if anyone answered your question and i know its been 6 months but yes it would hurt, he isnt wearing the proper padding underneath in this video

  • @pdicestunnerz yes i noticed that now XD this was about 6 months ago, i have studied many forms of armor since then :) but still, thanks for the comment :)

  • @Himotary i want chainmail and scale mail like this so bad, bad i dont have the money or the tools to buy or make it

  • @pdicestunnerz don't worry bro! making chainmaille is supercheap! and you can spread out the costs over the time it takes to make it :) as far as tools go, you just need some pliers :)

  • Haha!! This is great.

  • omg no padding = pain :D:D:D

  • tell your friend, aim for the head you get more points.

  • dis guys crazy

  • you should have used a hammer.

  • haha you're awesome ^ ^<3

  • you need a Gambeson(linen) to go with it

  • to stop some or all the pain

  • @someguy001001 4 layers of it

  • man, you must trust that guy!

    HAHAHAHAHA

  • yeah it really scared the shit out of me cuz he's kinda a ditz lol

  • haha be careful with that haha. nice.

  • wow i gad the exact same machete

  • i expected that this vest is effective against the machete but not against a knife stab.

  • intenta a golpear de punta desde abajo, hacia arriba, si así no se clava,es una armadura magnifica

  • Is that chain-mail?

  • scale-mail, if you look closer, you can see that its small scales

  • wow.....gay

  • haha.. nice :]
