Why did they leave out Sly and The Family Stone?? They were after James and definitely before Funkadelic. Even The Temptations began doing funk rhythms before Funkadelic.

@lestoil Good point. Also Bootsy has always given credit to Larry Graham as an influence, and his slapping bass was a key ingredient to Sly's sound. There's some irony in that Sly is now living in a van in front of Bootsy's mom's house in L.A.

@lestoil-Time to fine tune this particular observation. They definitel covered Sly and the Family Stone, but it's just not featured in this part. And the Temptations foray into Funk came about through the influence of P-Funk more than Sly. Norman Whitfield used to record the P-Funk shows at Detroit's 20 Grand club. He would then take those tapes back to the Motown studios and the result was tracks like "Cloud Nine". The guitar arrangement in "I Can't Get Next To You" is also proof.
