I think I remember singing this version of the song to myself when I was a kid...it must have got implanted into my head when I went to see Ernest Saves Christmas with my dad when I was 6. This scene epitomizes the simple charm and innocence of Ernest that made us laugh; Ernest didn't have to put anybody down or shove a political opinion down our throats to bring laughs...that's what made this character of Jim Varney's so timeless and loveable.
