Doesn't acteon spot Artemis when she was bathing? And I thought that Acteon had 29 hounds, or maybe this show just pits too many twists in Greek mythology
please add more plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i studied greek mythology from when i was in grade 2
@HConstantine There are many versions of Acteon's 'sin.' None of the supposed sins have anything to do with hunting. The main elements of the story are this, Acteon was a great hunter, he angered the gods some kind of way,so he was turned into a deer, and killed by his own hounds. Everyone who writes about him, ancient authors included, inserts their own idea of what his 'sin' was.
Sure, but by far the most commonly-accepted rendition of the story involves the "sin" of seeing a virgin goddess (Artemis) nude, lusting for her, being discovered, and punished.
captain planet, 5 kids from 5 different parts of the globe given 5 magic rings over 5 different elements. And they all magicaly spoke english, transported around the world and didn't have any relatives looking for them. (I don't like things that aren't realistic, how can they be from around the world and speak the same language?)
....well, English is the most widely spoken language. It's also the language of international business, aviation, and one of two languages of international sporting. So, go fig.
I just believe that it shouldn't have been done if it was that necessary to make such drastic changes; effectively altering most aspects of the myth. I won't even get started on the violence in children's television.
I'm sorry, but this is just horrid. I understand the need to censor some of the images, but in this cartoon the entire myth was changed. In the real myth the hunter Actaeon came across a Diana while she was bathing. As punishment the chaste Diana turned Actaeon into a stag, and he was immediately killed by his hounds. I mean really, why change the entire story and then call it educational. Good job ruining mythology.
Artemis cursed Actaeon yes, but warned him that her curse would not take effect so long as he never spoke in the human tongue again, thus to ensure he couldn't tell anyone of the nature of her virgin purity, so apparent that it could even be seen.
... but I'm relatively sure the questions on the writers plate were:
1) how the heck do you clean THAT up for kids?
2) how do you stretch that into 22min?
....so, no surprise that what we ended up with was different
I understand that there is a need to condense and censor, but the animated version completely ignored many of the points of the original myth (Greek or Roman; Artemis or Diana). Oh I know the curse. I only left it out because I was going for an overview as I had to limit myself to 500 characters.
It's from the first season of the series, where the animation is HORRID, the gods are depicted inconsistently, drawn differently, and voiced by changing actors, and the quality is a pittance of what it was in these 2nd season episodes.
Which is, of course, why we insult them with underdeveloped characters, cut-and-paste moral issues that lack any thought, several obvious anachronisms, and a Mr. Rogers narrator to explain everything - including stating the cardboard moral of the story directly - just in case they should think we expect them to come to any reasonable conclusion on their own.
On the upside, the animation is very good. It makes me wonder what happened to our cartoons these days.
...so instead of whining about it, tell me: what then is your suggestion for such block programming?
That, and the animation is decent in the 2nd season episodes, but just shy of horrific in the 1st season-- which is why I've posted so few of that season's episodes.
First of all, drop the narrator entirely and let the story tell itself.
Chaeron, whose name they constantly mispronounce, was an exhile from his people, who were mostly brutal and savage. I would have portrayed Chaeron as a very lonely individual, seeking to train heros as a need to fill the void left by being thrown out of his homeland.
Depending on where in Greece we're talking, the Greeks did hunt for sport, but only during certain times of the year.
Chaeron was an exile, being the only noble member of a savage race. I'ld have made him a very lonely figure, teaching heros out of a need to fill the void left from having no home.
Instead of "must punish Acteon for his evilness" I'd still have him come on Artemis by surprise, tresspassing in an area sacred to her, hunting one of her sacred creatures. This would show Acteon's brashness without misrepresenting sport hunting.
Why not have several episodes dedicated to the exploits of Chaeron, developing several running characters for a while, and show Acteon's encounter with Artemis as part of it? That way, you could develope all of them into well-rounded characters.
And the Greeks didn't use traps - especially not steel-jaw bear traps, which weren't invented until the 1800s if I remember correctly - sport hunting was about prowess in ancient Greece, they went hand to hand with the creatures.
In any case, the point is simply that there are lots of ways to go about it that still hold true to the myth and to the culture and still be "safe" for children. And really, parents don't need to be so uptight about things. On the whole, children handle things a lot better than we give them credit for and if parents do their jobs in raising them, there's not a problem. Look at the level of brutality/nudity it anime. Japan doesn't have a bigger problem with crime in its country than we do.
...considering that glass drinking-cups have been found in Greece/Italy from as far back as Etruscan times, I don't really see anything out of the ordinary here.

I do, but it's a 1st-Season ep

Yeah they did kinda sanitize it. There can be a lesson in both legends: respect for another's privacy; respect during the hunt.

Acteon's sin was seeing Artemis naked. Where do they get all this anti-hunting nonsense?

@HConstantine That's what I thought. This is almost negligently revised.

You missed a key part though:
Artemis cursed Actaeon yes, but warned him that her curse would not take effect so long as he never spoke in the human tongue again, thus to ensure he couldn't tell anyone of the nature of her virgin purity, so apparent that it could even be seen.

That bear trap is wrong, they weren't even invented until the 1700's or something... maybe before that but certainly not in ancient greece!
Tyrel0401 3 years ago 7
Leghold traps actually go back to the 1500s... you're thinking of the Conibear patent, specifically.
But yes, your point is accurate... doubt they had those way back then ;)

1500's... I do stand corrected ^_^

ImmortalSynn, is there a telling of the myth of Atalanta in the series? It's one of my favorites.

There is, but I won't be posting it.

Gods. Talk about hijacked by modern-day social values. This is horendously innacurate, both to the myth and to the ancient Greek culture.
cheezemonkeyeater 3 years ago
Sure... but it's also aimed at children under 12, so perhaps voyeurism and bestiality weren't exactly appropriate topics for that demographic? ;)

Nice suggestions, though would be tough IMO to squeeze that into a 22minute platform.

...well, I would like to note that Chiron does appear in quite a few episodes in this series: particularly those concerning Jason & the Argonauts.

Well, good luck with the social engineering part... particularly when it comes to sensitivity as to what's "safe" for children.
Hell, look how many people in the USA still FREAK out when they see a woman breastfeeding (even semi-"exposed") in public. :-/
