Anybody have an idea what the whistle was about around Foster's neck? No one before or since FB can combine all the elements of real comedy like he could; timing, character, material, delivery, play on words, situation, self example, etc.
The first time l ever saw Foster it was an all too brief cameo in a comedy film--it may have been Cannonball Run. He played a guy fishing from a rowboat with a friend and he was bragging about the fish he caught the week before. His companion says ' Was it big? to which Brooks replies,' Big?...The photograph weighed thuuu....uuurdy five pounds! Priceless stuff. Yet,revered and loved as he was by everyone in show business, why did he never get a full part in a film. What a waste of a genius.
Sammy Davis, and the rest of these entertainers had a great sense of humor, which makes these roasts so enjoyable..............................more importantly, they didn't take themselves so seriously either!
Foster Brooks was the best drunk ever...of course he was acting...but he pulled it off brilliantly...one of the things that jumps out at me on all these wonderful clips is that everybody, (except maybe Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, etc) were constantly smoking.
I don't think Dean was ever without a cigarette...how much he actually smoked it is another thing, but he did die of lung cancer...When you look across the stage and think that one of the only survivors of these moments is Don Rickles..
This was the golden age of television. I hope some younger people see these vids and see what they missed. They missed comedy without profanity. They missed the best of Hollywood getting together for a show; not a bunch of lame comedians that couldn't fill my backyard with an audience; a group that never even met the person they roasted. Back then the roasters were close friends of the roastee and didn't need a team of writers to give them material. Those days are long gone.
@chrispmis So glad we have youtube to GET BACK to where we belong...Laughing at each other, one another and ourselves. Foster Brooks, has brought more laughter in the last year or so, than a generation before, to myself. The Sandy Duncan joke would fly past young folks, but is priceless. I'm quite glad I came across these vids.
@chrispmis Foster Brooks was famous for acting like a belligerent drunk on stage... Alcohol has killed more people than curse words so I think I would rather have the curse words...but it is still a "cleaner" performance I agree.
This is one of the all time great comedy skits and is higlighted by Foster Brooks` great dellivery as a drunk. Don Rickles laughed uncontrollably and it is infectious. TV programming back in the 70s was far superior to anything today.
What a riot ! "Mr. Davis, you are a great performer. What you do to an audience is incredible. There they sit, spellbound, wondering if someone in your entourage is ransacking their rooms." "Ransacking" is such a funny word.
@SmoothEdward That's true. He could have said robbing or burglarizing but it would not have been as funny. Ransacking implies robbing but also really tearing up the place.
These were the best of the best. I will always remember how funny these roast were. know one can ever touch them, they were funny and no profanity used. I have great memories.
wow, we sure dont have stars that like today. it's fucking pathetic today... justin biber and fucking lohan. its bullshit. i wish we had humor like this now, and i think its pathetic cause i was born in 91...
Im from those days-and of course they are now taboo jokes. Thats life . I dont defend them as not racist or un PC..they are. But in context, that was what American comedy was. If you didnt laugh at the drunk or the bigot or the colored jokes..you were a nerd, not hip.
And Rickles outlived them all!...except for Dionne.
2:25 - 3:15 is THE best moment ever on the Dean Martin Roast. Watch how hard Dean Martin laughs during that sections. It's hilarious. Foster Brooks ruled!
A True Comedic Genuis. There will never be another Foster Brooks. His Delivery, and timing is amazing. And America will never have as much brilliance and class and grace that it had during the time frame in which the individuals were famous.
Thank you very much for sharing one of the funniest men in show biz. I hate to sound nostalgic but it's true, ever since Eddie Murphy hit the big time it's just one F word after another. This was real entertainment.
this was comedy.....clean, original, no curse words, and a real friendship between everyone so that they didn't take anything personally! wish we could get that back
Thank God for Youtube. Simple as that. Such a shame we do not have talent today to take the torch and run with it. We need to do a lot of things in life according to where we came from so we can get back on track and do things the right way.
To all those who say comedy today is vulgar and dirty. Don't you think portraying a drunk idiot on television back then was considered profain and vuglar?
@daveed2001. No, it wasn't considered profane or vulgar. As I was alive when these originally aired, I can tell you that it was just funny. It was called an act. Foster Brooks did not smoke or drink. It was an act. People had much thicker skin and a far better sense of humor than anyone has now.
Foster Brooks is one of the funniest men I have ever seen. I've watched this loads of times and it makes me laugh every time. I did have to look up what Sterno was though. Somebody stepped on my tongue is classic.
Classic s***! I remember watching these roasts when i was but a wee lad. To think that actual adult behavior, albeit drinking and smoking, was celebrated and applauded, love this old school! Now, you'd have to tag on a warning label, per "smoking, drinking, adult language, breaking balls, etc."
jposam23 thinks that comedians weren't what he or she calles "vulgar" back then? The Dean Martin roasts were sanitized version of the very same roasts that took place at The Friar's Club, where they originated. The very same comedians did some of the same material, but uncensored - and trust me, each and every one of them that you see onstage in these televised roasts were TWICE as "vulgar," as you call it, than ANY comedian you could find on TV today.
This was a time when the best of the best got together and had fun without profanity and without anyone being offended. These days are gone forever but we always have these videos to take us back to a day when it was pure talent and class.
Sammy always took the black jokes with class and dignity. He was a star in the truest sense of the word and one of the most talented people to ever walk God's green earth. I still miss him.
They never existed. I was a kid when this was being aired live and my grandparents used to say the same thing: "where have these days gone?" (referring to days gone by). Every genration, when they reach a certain age, develop on intolerance for "today's standards" in the same way that every generation's parents thinks their children's music is horrible compared to what they grew up on.
actually, he did drink in his time, quite a lot actually but he dropped the booze 1964. his words "Fellow made me a $10 bet I couldn't quit, and I haven't had a drink since. At the time I needed the $10"
Now this is a LOADED dias...amazing talent appearing at Sammy's roast, and a huge audience. Foster Brookes in his cups, as always, slays with great writing and perfect timing.
Absolutely. The majority of them are long since passed on to the great beyond. Their legends will live on through these roasts so that many young people can witness the GENIUS of their careers.
In response to bluegsp, the only issue I take with your comment is that you say that the quote you referenced of Foster Brooks was racist - I disagree. Sure, it would have been racist if there was an intent to be racist by the person who said it (Foster Brooks), BUT it was quite obvious to everyone on the deus and in the crowd (as well as everyone else watching the show) that there was no malice behind Foster's comment and rather that his comment was really a jab at racial prejudice instead
The roasts today are terrible. Certainly vulgar and informal. You had to be talented to be hilarious and not use curse words every other line. This is what Dean Martin roasts excelled at.
Two people I can think of who are funny while being vulgar are Chris Rock and Bernie Mac. Stand up comedians are pretty much a hit or miss, but I find a lot of them on Comedy Central to be, well, just not that great.
Actually, the Dean Martin roasts were simply tailored to meet censor's standards. Celebrity roasts originated at The Friar's Club, and what went on that those roasts by the VERY SAME comedians were far more "vulgar," as you call it, than ANY comedian you'll see today on television. It all depends on what you've been exposed to - and how and where.
"From dancing for penny's to that magnificent moment when Frank Sinatra phoned down to the lobby and said, "send the colored kid up to dance while I shave"
racist, yes, but funny as hell.
America had a sense of humor, and some of the best comedians the world has ever seen were working then.
There were only two occasions when I saw my father cry. His mothers funeral, and when ever the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts were on.
They were hilarious and they didn't use one curse word, unlike the untalented performers at today's roasts. Every other word you hear "beep". They aren't funny either and most of them aren't even famous unlike on Dino's Roasts.
They actually were FAR more "vulgar," as you call it, than ANY comedian today. The Dean Martin roasts were sanitized versions of celebrity roasts which took place at The Friar's Club, where they originated. What they said and did free of television's censorship standards would make any comedian today PALE in comparison as far as "vulgar" goes. We just live in a puritanical society, that's all.
Foster Brooks and other comedians from his era were deserving of performing on television. Their hard work that was crafted over time resulted in writing and delivering quality, creative, funny bits. Their professional performance resulted in quality entertainment for the viewer. Today there is no standard for how to treat the viewer and we are subjected to performers who are ALWAYS young, with scripted, dull, filth to deliver like showroom dummies. BRING QUALITY BACK!
I like how foster always smacks Dean Martin around when he's laughing

Foster Brooks was one of the best...makes me piss my pants every time.

Dean loses it at the Sinatra joke at the end. This was Foster's best, IMO.

Comedic genius! I'm in my 50's and was lucky to see these in the 1970's.
It's a shame that there is nothing today that can make you laugh so hard.

So funny!
No one has ever played a drunk like Foster Brooks, before or since.

@KratostheThird You got that right!!! These were classic.

His mothers funeral, and when ever the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts were on.
bluegsp 2 years ago 3
They were hilarious and they didn't use one curse word, unlike the untalented performers at today's roasts. Every other word you hear "beep". They aren't funny either and most of them aren't even famous unlike on Dino's Roasts.

They actually were FAR more "vulgar," as you call it, than ANY comedian today. The Dean Martin roasts were sanitized versions of celebrity roasts which took place at The Friar's Club, where they originated. What they said and did free of television's censorship standards would make any comedian today PALE in comparison as far as "vulgar" goes. We just live in a puritanical society, that's all.

lmao great dont see this any more

Foster Brooks and other comedians from his era were deserving of performing on television. Their hard work that was crafted over time resulted in writing and delivering quality, creative, funny bits. Their professional performance resulted in quality entertainment for the viewer. Today there is no standard for how to treat the viewer and we are subjected to performers who are ALWAYS young, with scripted, dull, filth to deliver like showroom dummies. BRING QUALITY BACK!
