You should be using the proper flex connectors to terminate all armored cable into any electrical box. Doing what you have done here, runs the risk of damaging the conductors and potentially causing a short. Metal Sheers aren't side cutters or proper wire strippers and to terminate Flex you use a Hack Saw and the sharp edges on the flex have to be protected against cutting through the conductors by means of an Anti-Short... Advice? Have an Electrician Install the device...
I have a project you may be interested in that I think you will like. Turn my 2002 Toyota Prius into an electric car as well as a hybrid car. I would like to plug it up at night and maybe get 50 on a battery charge and then switch over to the hybrid .
Great Video. Might I suggest insulation to keep the temperature up as much as possible so the heater does not have to work hard when it come on back again.
hey pete- tx for the great video. you made the install so much easier. how much has your bill gone down? how about doing a diy class a chimney install video. i can't seem to find a good one. -|-
Reverse osmosis will not only remove all the stuff you don't need, it also removes all the minerals and nutrients you do need. So it ends up being a toss up, but they do have additives that will put the minerals back in.
I stopped leaving my coffee pot on and now use a Norelco +12 coffee warmer, sort of like what you see in restaurants but smaller and less power. It uses 75 watts to keep a pot of coffee fairly hot versus a coffee pot using 900-1050 watts. We've saved nearly $10 in electric on that alone! For a personal heater under my desk, I use a 250 watt infrared lamp and I plan to put a 500 watt lamp controller on that for those days I need less, aka, saving more!
I installed this timer yesterday & set up for 240 volts. The timer runs quite warm has an electrical smell. Is that just due to the fact that the relays are new?
@Ps3notxbox360 LOL first time I been called that. Well more like green huger.. I just dont want to send any more $ to the electric company then I need too.
You really should put strain relief brackets on where the wire comes in and out of the box. All it takes is a trip, fall, and grab, and you've ripped a hot wire out of a live box.
Great video. I have researched this a lot, only to find out that the average electric water heater only runs for about 3 hours a day. Your water heater has no exterior insulation, which I would recommend. Since the heater has to bring the water back up to temperature after being off for several hours, it will use more electricity during that period of time. To save 50% on water heating, you would actually have to turn off the heater 60-70% of the time.
I think that Electrical codes don't allow switch boxes, breaker boxes or any type of electrical box next to piping that contains water!! check your electrical code for your area
Good information. A timer for a water heater is affordable. Tankless water heaters are very spendy if you purchase a new one. I saved $16.67 per month in the last 6 months since I installed a timer on my gas water heater. You can google gaswaterheatertimer

i think its a good idea......i was looking at the same timer at lowes.
yes put a insulated cover over it also. the water heater will stay warm for some time, so your heating warm water, not cold water, even 10 or so hours later.
220 power can kill you. be careful.
i bought a small electric on demand water heater. too small.......
i used instant on demand gas heaters in china and in the philipinnes....they are very nice..chinese model heater, cheaper than your usa timer
but look at the big picture, you would not need a timer if you had a tankless water heater, it heats up the water at the time of use. you don't need to chew up your electricity like you sayor have water settiment to worry about, check out loews plus it takes up alot less space than what you have already
I got a extra hot water heater insulation Jacket on my hot water heater. It is made out of fiberglass and vinyl. some people even put two jackets on theirs heaters they really help hold the heat in better. you just use duct tape to hold it on. they only cost a few buck but get great results.
how did you make a 19 min video? I tried to upload my first video the other day which was about 16 min and youtube wouldn't let me do it. Yea I know it's supposed to be 10 min or less but i lost track of time, so what gives here?
we have been cutting our water heater off for about 2 years now and we have cut down our electric bill just kick off the water heater breaker in your fuse box kick it on about 1/2 hour before you want to use it then shut it down when done
@tonymel2005 Im going to update everyone on my new bill as soon as I get it.. Yeah little by little I will really have my bills beat up.. I have better uses for my money in mind. ;o)~
I put one on my gas water heater. I saved $16.67 per month in the last 6 months. You can find them if you Google gas water heater timer or water heater timer.
why don't you just switch over to a tankless water heater? that way when you need hot water it heats it up immediately when you need it. I think they are about 300 bucks at loews.
@mixcatcom OHHH NO!!! NO TANKLESS heaters. Consumer Reports says you do NOT save any money-it would take over 20 years to recoup. High maintenance. I heard and read **MANY** complaints, some people said it took FOUR MINUTES of constant running water before they got hot. I seen some videos they run it, it makes TERRIBLE noise. Two videos I seen of them LEAKING which is a fire hazard. And "cold sandwich" effect. Tankless is major FAIL!
Since you live in Florida, just run a black hose in coils on your roof, or just in the yard as a preheater. A local camp in Illinois uses two fifteen foot concentric coils of black tubing on the bathhouse. These were installed when the commercial natural gas preheater broke. Pool is about 24 to 30 feet by about maybe 100 feet, but only 5 feet deep.
Just remember it takes more power to heat water from stone cold than it does from warm so realy you will save power if you set your thermostat so the tank does not get cold
My water heater only runs from 7:00PM to 7:00 AM, and skips weekends ( I am on a time of use meter) The utility originally provided my timer, it is a carryover type with battery backup. The battery died and took out the charging circuit, but after $2.00 in parts and a Ni Mh battery it lives again, not bad it is almost 20 years old. Wow, mine don't look that cool, no lights on mine
Check out a featured video on my channel for solar hot water, it is so easy esp for garage units.
That's a good idea Pete. Now all I need is my own house so I can get one.

Just kidding. Very helpful video. I have one of these and didn't really know how I was going to hook it up. thanks!

Consider these boxes are OK, until the power goes out, then your timer is out of whack when power returns, easy to not be aware of this.
