Still one of my favourite songs not just from Avishai's opus but in my whole life. There are just so many memories and feelings i had with this melody in my ears ....not to mention i get wet eyes and faster pulse during Shai piano solo. Must be weird to see me listening to this and walking trough my town :)
I've got the songbook. The correct time signature can be written (as in the book) as a bar of 5/8 and a bar of 6/4. This however is very confusing to count. To properly count the rhythm i simply think 5/8 six times and then 3/8 once and repeat. Do the math niggas
I think if I try really hard (like practice 6 months for 1 song) I can mimic the piano. I know a bass player that can do the same with the bass in these Avishai's songs. But the drums!? Seriously, what on earth!? I don't think I know anyone that is able to play that.
new avishai cohen live from cully (switzerland) will be presented thurdsay 21.20 cet on MEZZO. Awesome live from the seven seas tour, I know what I'm speaking about, I was in the audience !! Enjoy guys !
@drufuss2006 Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pat Metheny, John Zorn, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Soni Rollins, Irakere, Sacbé, Bill Evans, Hector Infanzón,John Patitucci, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, John Scofield etc...
@drufuss2006 yes, EST is nice. If like mellow piano, try: Marcin Wasilewski Trio /watch?v=6K5wDvzFo4U&NR=1, or Leszek Mozdzer /watch?v=uIN71J3tahM If like trumpet, too, must try: Tomasz Stanko /watch?v=94dkiKOa6kk . I'm new to jazz, too. So have fun, like me :)
it is 5 5 5 5 6 5 3. or 5 5 5 5 6 8 as you prefer:) That is why it is written: 5/8 (2x) and 6/4 bcs there is the long G lasting 16/6 and it is easier to write it down
Well Ive thought about it..and by the way about what I have said...and I see that has said here,by some people that this part is 7/4 .. well.. If you combain those (6/8+6/8+6/8) as trills like I said and the 2/8 , youve got 6/4 ( every 6/8 = 2/4) + 2/8 = 14/8 = 7/4
So I am VERY confused about what time signature it is !!
My musical writing range does not exceed 4/4 or 3/4 so I'm not even going to ask how technical this music is, i'm just going to enjoy it for what i'm hearing. Is that ignorant?
god since hearing this song i cant stop playing jazz!
usually i am a teenage metalhead, but since i was introduced to jazz by my music teacher in my school's music department i have been thinking jazz, improvising jazz, and just listening to jazz. ofcourse im not going to stop listen to rock and metal music, but part of being a musician is getting to know new styles of music.
Undeniably, Avishai Cohen is one of bass legends. His style of playing is somehow very interesting; it sounds so simple, yet complicated. It just took me his Ever Evolving Etude to get addicted to his music.
i see you bought the transcription ;) i think it's only written like this to make reading easier. but it's not really possible to feel it like that. i gotta stay in the subdivision to improvise over it (check my vid ;) )
Sounds like it is in 9/8 then 11/8 repeating. Avi's songs are the exact direction jazz needs to move in: complex harmonies, super rhythmic, and groovin!!
i've tried to copy his skill, matrix style you know, to become my own. No succes though, big surprise heh.. will keep on trying because as you said, he gives me the chills.
some friend of mine introduced this wonderful trio to me about 2/3 years ago. took them about 6 months efter that to visit sweden and have a concert at one of gothenburgs jazzclubs called nefertiti. I count that as my no. 1 musical experience ever and i dare say you wouldn't disagree with me on that one if you´d been there to see them.

well,when I count like this way I also succeed,but I also succeed to count in 13/8 - 10+3
I really think you are counting the 3+3=6/8 in trills- listen to the bass notes are played by the piano, you get the quarters of this part.
MaroMeshuggah 8 months ago

if you count the left hand of piano (on original song) it goes like:
5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4
makes 34. so it's 34/16 or 17/8
if you are a drummer do it with your hands:
RLRLR LRLRL RLRLR LRLRL RLRLR LRLRL RLRL
it cerainly fits :)

from Babylon:
Chutzpa is: impudence, effrontery, presumption, forwardness, gall, immodesty, impertinence, impertinency, insolence, liberty, mouth, neck, nerve, perkiness, pertness, presumptuousness, rudeness, sauciness...
i think rudeness is the most exact word to my eyes. being "Chutzpan" means someone that is rude. very simple and precise to my eyes...
