Anyone who criticises the guy for cutting the rope is frankly an idiot and has no concept of the situation.
At that point he had no other option but to cut off the weight dragging him down the mountain, there was literally no other option available to him; if he hadn't both men would have probably died, any real climber or human being would do the same.
Mountain climbers are actually taught in dangerous situations like this to cut the rope, it's better to have one die and another survive.
