I have figured out that the man who is rescued with his son Jimmy is voiced by John Stephenson. Stephenson is best known as the voice of Mr. Slate on the Flintstones, and as Dr. Benton Quest on about the first six episodes of Jonny Quest (Don Messick took over in the remaining episodes).

Why question how he grew up..during his trek to Earth or how he learned english or acquired his super costume? Let's just accept this radio interpretation of the character's origin.

I grew up with the radio show in the 40s. I've never forgotten Collyer's voice. It was perfect for both Clark and Superman (high and low), and it's still my favorite.
