Also, the weapon is a Staff, not a sword or a stick (by staff I mean it is heavy).
This also affect the combat distance, since we dont have hand guards, the distance is a way to keep the hands safe even from indirect bouncing hits. Only at a very high level you can block at close distance, Luis does something like that at 0:57
the long distance is kept to avoid the thrust situation(like at 0:05), some times he points the weapon at me, doesn't actually hit me, but you can clearly see i just stop in recognition that I would have been hit if I continued or if he moved forward(we don't want to get hurt but if we have conscience of what we are doing we dont need to go all the way with real weapons just to practice).
Hi zienit, we tend to keep distance, moving back to not get hit, so, some times we end up blocking at a distance the strike would not actually hit us, because we moved back from the beginning of the strike(to be safe we block most of the time anyway). Some times, when my strike is shortened, Luis does exactly what you say, and just moves back and counters, that is the best thing to do as you say since I'm compleately beat if that is done at right timing.
thanks for sharing this, and say hi to Luis and thank him again for coming to Swordfish last year!
