I've been to China many times. And I've seen kids like these on the streets, and I agree it's sad that it's happening, but what's even sadder is that these kids are taught to be like this. To try to squeeze out penny from foreign tourists if they have the opportunity. Why is it the kids begging and not the parents or the guardian (many of the kids have an older guardian to make that clear)? Because foreigners like to sympathize with the situation and would most like give money.
We did - but he kept bugging us for more and more. He is obviously a veteran at playing tourists on a break - you can see he is giggling and laughing a lot of the time, and he followed us continually for about six blocks until some older chinese women told him to go home !

I've been to China many times. And I've seen kids like these on the streets, and I agree it's sad that it's happening, but what's even sadder is that these kids are taught to be like this. To try to squeeze out penny from foreign tourists if they have the opportunity. Why is it the kids begging and not the parents or the guardian (many of the kids have an older guardian to make that clear)? Because foreigners like to sympathize with the situation and would most like give money.

We did - but he kept bugging us for more and more. He is obviously a veteran at playing tourists on a break - you can see he is giggling and laughing a lot of the time, and he followed us continually for about six blocks until some older chinese women told him to go home !

@cactussandwich44 - In a nutshell, my friend (the one getting tackled) first gave the kid 2 or 3 yuan - then when the kid saw my friend give an older woman & her child 10 yuan, then he started following us asking for more money and playing games like running around parked cars and jumping out at us etc - I'm sure he's done this sort of thing a million times before with western tourists playing up the "cute kid" angle - in all, I think he scored about 15 yuan.

I lived in China 6 years. Beggars are some of the richest people in China. A walking street in a large city sees about 2 million people a day. If 1% of those people give, a family of 3-4 that are begging, 1 RMB that is 20,000 RMB per day.

I've been to Xi'an to see the terracotta warriors....but I don't think there was a million of them ?? Bloody brilliant place to visit though....there is an enormous fountain in the city square next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. One of my favourite cities to visit in China !
