A fortress is a stronghold. Nowadays, they contain End portals. However, their significance here is that they are the only places where there are chests with apples in them.

@Greenpois0nn my advice to you is try makin creations using mechanical items such as redstone, repeaters etc as you make more creations you'll in time get better but start out with some simple things.

I dont think gathering flint works like that, i think flint can only be gathered once from a block

@Swerdman55 It's not a feature nor exploit. When sand falls, it becomes an entity. Entities don't hurt you when they are falling (besides arrows) and you can walk through them.

@meincraftbros Were talking about gravel dropping flint more than once, not about the sand door as i think that is quite a cool idea. But i reckon notch will fix it. He always fixes things that people dont want fixing :p

@Swerdman55 Thats down to personal opinion. Personally i think it is an exploit because you can get multiple flint out of one block, and it also makes people have a purpose to grind to get parts they need.

On the other hand you may be one of the people that love the feature so you may not see it as an exploit but as part of the game

@aljowen Wait wait wait. You're not getting multiple flints from one gravel. You can repeatedly pick up the same gravel until you get flint, but in the end it's only yielding one flint.
