What I don't understand is why apparently intelligent people (the Hollywood stars, starlets, etc.) didn't see Ron Hubbard's son suicide and subsequent cover-up, in the early days of the cult, as a warning that something rotten was taking place amongst Scientology cultists. As to the "common" people the "brain-washing" it's kind of understandable, but the others? Totally incomprehensible.

@infernocanuck I agree with you, and know that, unfortunately from personal experience, it's easy to get fooled if we allow ourselves to be fooled - my rhetorical question had more to do with the fact that information regarding this dangerous cult was widely available in the internet, a long time previous to Sweeney's docs... I was just wondering if the "smart" scientologist people preferred to overlook, ignore that data in spite of all the obvious warning signs.

@xklamation Well, the good news is that the evidence, the backlash, and the criticisms of this so called "Church" is piling up. This information -has- been told, over and over, but it takes a while for a significant portion of the population to actually get exposed to it. Scientology, as a "religion" is dying and imploding, because more people are getting this information.

@infernocanuck you're absolutely right, I'm trying to divulge another case, with a smaller scale and different circumstances - independently of the efforts made for the last 3 years at great personal cost, I realized that only very few people do care, enough, to act or to expose the lies of that case. I became a Christian when I was at my lowest ebb, and joined a Church in which most of the people were whacky, born-again Christians who believed everything the Church told them, and considered any opposition to these teachings to be a product of the devil. If you questioned your faith you were told not to entertain such thoughts, as they were put there by the devil. Craziness. You're told not to use common sense, because it will lead to the realisation that it's all bs

Scientology is not a religion nor should it ever be considered one. In order to "fix" Scientology all those buildings need to be sold and razed to the ground. It should be reformed as a non-profit support group that only meets in public buildings where anyone is welcome.

@fzappa007 If you look at the definition of 'cult' , all religions are cults. 'Religion' is most commonly used as a word for a really big, "socially acceptable" (quotes because they shouldn't be) cult.
Likewise, going to church is a catholic cult practice, as is baptism. This is even more apparent in French, where the expression 'culte' still has that meaning more or less commonly used for any religious ritual, including prayer.
