Too fast but I'm guessing Monte is all about speed and accuracy. It would sound much better off the meth or whatever has him going at light speed. Any ideas what kinda guitar besides beat-up he's playing? Reminds me of my Martin DC-15E.
The thing with Knopfler is, he does not sing and play music over the top of it, his guitar playing blends in with his singing, the music changes to the words, like the bit with the honky tonk, perfect example, great songwriter.
Excellent guitar player, but please, never, EVER, sing. Also, this is a bad choice of songs to cover. You can't possibly add anything to it. Some songs are better left alone, and this is one of them.
@ReverendTFunk I don't play anywhere, I don't even play guitar, but that doesn't mean that I don't know anything about music. There are certain songs out there that deserve to be left alone. Nobody could add anything to them over what the original artist had done. Mark Knopfler(Dire Straits) and Sultans of Swing is an example of this.
@howlingmine exactly you don't play guitar. i bet if you ask the makers of this song to play this shit like this and sing all at the same time they would bow down. its not about sounding the same or over doing the original. its about doing it your way because your supposed to stand out. people don't want to hear the same thing by someone else anyways. just stupid.
@jdavidson1012 "i bet if you ask the makers of this song to play this shit like this and sing all at the same time they would bow down." What? That doesn't make any sense. You obviously know nothing about music, talent, punctuation, grammar, or spelling.

@UKToneKing SRV had something to add to Little wing, Montgomery added NOTHING to Sultans of Swing. See the difference? It doesn't take a Master's Degree to figure it out. But it if makes you feel better to lose an argument on the internet, congratulations. You just lost.
@howlingmine I can tell your not a musicians strait away, ( he did not add nothing to sultan of swing lol ) are U deaf and blind, he took the song and turned it into his own, he dropped his style on it from start to finish, if he would have played it the same as knopfler, your comment would have been just, but he totally transformed the song, U the only one that lost this argument, say what U want, but U know I am right, and thats all their is to it.

@UKToneKing Yes, I am very serious. I get it, "most" of the people on Youtube like Eddie and Chris. But if you take a look around, "most" of the people on Youtube also think Justin Bieber is the best singer in the world. It just goes to show that the majority of people that post to Youtube are idiots. These two guys attempt to over-sing everything. The only thing I could really give them any credit for is the fact that neither of them use autotune. Although the more I think about it, they should
@suitabledude Thank you, that means so much coming from someone whose YouTube channel shows support for Ron Paul. If you really want to call someone an idiot, go stand in front of a mirror, look deep into your own eyes, and repeat "You're an idiot" 50 times. Maybe it will sink in.
@howlingmine non-sequitor. look it up. I presume you voted for our great and mighty leader his majesty Barack Obama? Or rather you voted for RINO ferret John McCain? In either case, go look at yourself in the mirror and slam your head against it really hard until you start to see red dripping from your forehead.
@suitabledude Actually, it's non sequitur. You may have known the meaning, but you spelled it incorrectly. Thank you for proving my point that you, sir, are the idiot.
I produced this clip. (You see a reference to one of my websites at the end.) The video was weak and I had to enhance it to make it visible enough to watch Monte play. The audio from that show was so poor that I took a sb recording from a different show and match up with slight sync adjustments.
There are a few hiccups. Some complained that Monte's timing was off, but it was just my editing. Monte asked me to remove this clip from YouTube, so I did. suizo92 did not have permission to post this.
The speed in which the song is delivered is not about "showing off," it's about adding a tremendous amount of technical detail - built from the original riffs - but nearly impossible to replicate. It's artistic, and I'd be willing to argue, genius.
Truly a master at his guitar but, for me he's lost the soul of the song, its fine to shred, occassionally, but it almost seems as if he's just showing off because he can. Tommy Emmanual for example is a master of light and shade, soft and loud. He makes the guitar tell a story like Les Paul or Chet Atkins did with their beautiful melodic runs even at speed but Monte just drives like a teenager in a hot car. What do the old masters say (& even Jeff Beck)? Less Is Best
@Chris51" Less is Best " is a luxury that real working musicians like Monte sometimes can't get away with. Monte is one of the most musical people I've ever met or known of for that matter (MUCH better than Tommy in my humble opinion). but If he played slow and pretty like Jeff Beck does in the Bars he has to play - people would just leave. Much like eric johnson his big Selling point is the technical pyrotechnics he pulls off for you-- but believe me, he's much more than that.
This cover has been a regular part of Monte's playlist for over 20 years, and at times he mixes things up a bit. This video is not even close to representing how awesome Monte can shred this song live -- when he wants to !!! When he mixes it with Pinball Wizard and plays them the way he used to 20+ plus years ago, you fully understand why he's been voted one the 50 greatest guitar players of all time by the top guitar mags. That is an understatement in my opinion. Best live guitar anywhere.
@LochlanachViking How can you judge somebody's soul? You can't measure the emotion someone is putting into a song by listening to a crappy youtube video in 240p.
@LochlanachViking Yes, it appears that he has 100% of Monte Montgomery's technical skills, and 100% of Monte Montgomery's soul. He's very good at being himself :)
Pretty much agree with Lochlanach, beginning with his first comma.I wonder if Montgomery is actually trying to flow, or if he's (as it appears) merely punching the clock.
@RareBird0 lol. . . thinking the same thing as you. :-) Timing? You mean, the fact that Monte is playing lead guitar, bass, drums and synth. . . on his Alvarez? Nope, timing seems ok to me.
It's almost flamenco at some points. Monte is amazing.
Had someone argue with me today that Joe Bonamassa was a better acoustic player than Monte............really? Well l shouldnt make fun, maybe they were retarted.
His timing is impeccable ! It would be much more difficult, to slow down the progression, and still play all the parts...........I've watched all his video's on YT,and I will say,I'ev never seen, or heard, a better guitarist,or musician, for that matter !!! Thanks Monte, for sharing the talent that "GOD" gave you...................................
Talented but he makes the songs too technical and that takes away from his playing. I am in no way saying he is not amazing (He certainly is). Not a fan, but respect his ability. I enjoy Joe Bonamassa far more. I do not know what Monte is trying to prove with his fast style? he would astound people if he simply cleaned it up and slowed down. Sounds like Esteban on a dozen 5 hour energy drinks.
Monte is truely a phenomenon. As far as being played too fast, I agree but it only shows how good he really is. To be able to play something so intricate this fast and stil pull it off is amazing. Most of you haven't been watching Monte for more than a couple of years and didn't get to see him mature as an artist. I had the priveledge to have seen him since the early 90's starteing with a band called "The Distance" with Dale and Scott. He played this song slower but still put his own style in it.
Monte's great but he's such a douchebag. I met him twice and he was all over the girls like some creepy old man at a junior high cheerleading competition. He wouldn't give one guy the time of day and this just in, we're the ones that paid to see you, without us, you have no audience. I bought his CD before I met him and wanted it autographed and he wouldn't even look my way so I handed it to a waitress and she got the auto right away for me.
@vaibanez17 I met Monte in probably '04 or '05 and he was really nice, I met him again the next day lol and he was still really cool and nice and not creepy, so maybe you're just jealous. :P -- Either way, people have their off days.. no reason to hate.
@vaibanez17 Liar! You're just a jealous tool, that's probably why he didn't sign your F'n poster. Funny because when I met Monte he was the nicest guy, signed two posters, all of his CD's for me and couldn't be more unlike what you've described. you were probably drunk & causig a scene, memories can change when you're under the influence.
@suitabledude It's hilarious because I don't drink. I was probably in fact the only person there who had not had a drink. I waited patiently to meet him & when i got up there he blew me off. I did nothing to cause that. Then he went behind the stage and came back out again and that's when my waitress was like "i bet i can get it for ya" went right over & got it. No jealousy at all, I respect the hell out of his guitar playing. I just didn't understand why he didn't respond to my question.
There 's not one of the top ten guitar players in Rolling Stones last list that could play this song this way. So who's the best guitar player i the world.? Monte Mongomery.!
@robertmacisaac - "Trying to figure out what he is doing is like reading the white letters off an indy cars wheels during the race. I'm an atheist and all I can say is HOLY JESUS!!." .... this really sums it up ... 8?). Tks for suggesting him.
@rondorosa1 I'd pay big money to see a playoff between Monte, Yngwie, Knopfler, Frank Marino and Paul Gilbert. Hell Billy Sheehan can play that well on a friggin' bass!
It's called a niche', and this guy has found his. Definitely unusual and unique. I'd love to play electric like that, with a pick though. Awesome! can probably rip the bass/electric guitar too.
I wish I could see the guitar the way he see's it you know what I mean? When he look's at the Fret board because I don't any of that stuff he was playing!
Watching him is like going to a finger picking seminar. The one where everyone sits there mouth open and studious look that morphs into the confused looking around as if to say did anyone get that?
Hey Kobe, no need to call me an idiot. Get a metronome, start it, and watch Monte lose it more than once. No knock on his technical ability, no shot at his talent...just this is a groove song, and he loses that groove a number of times. No need to get personal it's simply a matter of fact...young man.
WOW makes me wanna burn every guitar I have ever touched. Seriously The MASTER and as always Monte.I have been a fan for 10 yrs. and I still can't get over how Awesome his talent is. Some were born to play.......
eres un hijo de perra!!!! genial pero el riff caracteristiko de la kancion lo cambiaste totalmente es como kitarle a la pizza el keso mozzarela eso es un pekado no puede ser
@ronaldreika Monte plays with none of the feeling that Mark Knopfler plays with. Monte is obviously technically proficient, but he really butchers the song as if it's some sped up exercise.
Mark Knopfler can writes and plays amazing songs. Monte does his own things.
To anyway imply that this performance or Monte's talent is in anyway better than Mark Knopfler's is ridiculous.
@MattRadioheadhead you're either jealous or incompetent...how can you say monte plays with no feeling? this is just an assumption by you derived from some weird belief that technical skill and feeling are incompatible. there's nothing that requires this to be the case. maybe you're inability to process information is hampering your ability to appreciate higher order cognitive abilities in such a way that you've become biased in such a way and this is unfortunate. of course monte plays w/ feeling
He is so bad ass, but his original stuff is horrible. If you go to his show, just admire his talent, and hope he plays a cover, and don't dare to ask him about them.
He is a freak, kind of like Lebron James only with a guitar instead of a basketball. For those of you that have negative comments please link your videos. If I could play like Monty I would entertain myself around the clock. You haters are just stricken with envy.
I've seen Monte Montgomery at least 20 times at the Saxon Pub, and there's nothing fake abou this guy. He's one of the best acoustic shows you'll ever see anywhere.
As a guitarist/songwriter I can appreciate what's happening here. If he were "mailing-in" a song he wrote, I would be concerned. But, in this case...Monte is showing his virtuosity and interpretation of a classic. That I, for one don't want to hear the same way it's been played for the millionth time! He gets a pass, and a cudos from me on this one! And, there is no "best" guitarist...only better! If there were a best, there would be no need for us to play anymore!
he's a good guitarist, no doubt about that, but he seems to be flat and lacks feeling (or depth) playing this piece from Mark Knopfler. Watch Knopfler and you'll find out what i mean.
Is it just me or do you feel like the asian getting shot by a machine gun in one of those cheesy action movies where your body convulses to every round in the beginning of this song because every note is so freking insane? And shut up to anyone who makes a sly remark of racism. I love all races.....that's just what popped in my head.
Is it still good of you sacrifice rhythm and musicality for calisthenics and pyrotechnics? He's mastered the guitar, but not the music. Less is more here for sure.
That's not very nice bootryfly, how I play guitar has nothing to do with the fact that the guy loses the groove a handful of times and over plays. Check out Monte at Live From Daryl's House, where you can see some great veterans holding down a great groove...some of Monte's best on line playing.
Careful pick-up placement and amplification set super hot can turn a guitar into a sensitive percussion instrument which only the most delicate touch can render pleasing. When the dynamics of both the instrument and the player are demonstrated in this way it is highly educational too.
Exactly that, he's in the zone alright, the whole time. He's in his own magnetic circle not many guitarist have even been in. He's in with the few very best.
So..how the h... did he do that ???? Playing with one hand-and then two hands.. you cant here a difference....How can you bend a note about 5 tones so close to the guitar head??? i dont get it.. FANTASTIC PLAYING !!!
amazing! if only i could play like that

IsaacB5679 1 year ago
@vaibanez17 I met Monte in probably '04 or '05 and he was really nice, I met him again the next day lol and he was still really cool and nice and not creepy, so maybe you're just jealous. :P -- Either way, people have their off days.. no reason to hate.
BiggaBMusic 1 year ago
@vaibanez17 Liar! You're just a jealous tool, that's probably why he didn't sign your F'n poster. Funny because when I met Monte he was the nicest guy, signed two posters, all of his CD's for me and couldn't be more unlike what you've described. you were probably drunk & causig a scene, memories can change when you're under the influence.
suitabledude 11 months ago
@suitabledude It's hilarious because I don't drink. I was probably in fact the only person there who had not had a drink. I waited patiently to meet him & when i got up there he blew me off. I did nothing to cause that. Then he went behind the stage and came back out again and that's when my waitress was like "i bet i can get it for ya" went right over & got it. No jealousy at all, I respect the hell out of his guitar playing. I just didn't understand why he didn't respond to my question.
vaibanez17 11 months ago
There 's not one of the top ten guitar players in Rolling Stones last list that could play this song this way. So who's the best guitar player i the world.? Monte Mongomery.!
robertmacisaac 1 year ago
@robertmacisaac - "Trying to figure out what he is doing is like reading the white letters off an indy cars wheels during the race. I'm an atheist and all I can say is HOLY JESUS!!." .... this really sums it up ... 8?). Tks for suggesting him.
EarCandyJar 1 year ago
@robertmacisaac Yngwie Malmsten could play it note for note and probably faster while singing the lyrics where you could understand them.
gunslinger5854 1 year ago
@gunslinger5854 Yngwie Malmsten is awesome....but he can not nor ever will be as good as Monte..... but Monte can play anything Yngwie can play !
rondorosa1 1 year ago
@rondorosa1 I'd pay big money to see a playoff between Monte, Yngwie, Knopfler, Frank Marino and Paul Gilbert. Hell Billy Sheehan can play that well on a friggin' bass!

Hey Kobe, no need to call me an idiot. Get a metronome, start it, and watch Monte lose it more than once. No knock on his technical ability, no shot at his talent...just this is a groove song, and he loses that groove a number of times. No need to get personal it's simply a matter of fact...young man.
mantrop 1 year ago
@mantrop Nice playing here, but you are definitely correct - Monte loses his rhythm numerous times, typically speeding up a little too much.

mark knofler, please step aside
ronaldreika 1 year ago
@ronaldreika Monte plays with none of the feeling that Mark Knopfler plays with. Monte is obviously technically proficient, but he really butchers the song as if it's some sped up exercise.
Mark Knopfler can writes and plays amazing songs. Monte does his own things.
To anyway imply that this performance or Monte's talent is in anyway better than Mark Knopfler's is ridiculous.
MattRadioheadhead 1 year ago
@MattRadioheadhead you're either jealous or incompetent...how can you say monte plays with no feeling? this is just an assumption by you derived from some weird belief that technical skill and feeling are incompatible. there's nothing that requires this to be the case. maybe you're inability to process information is hampering your ability to appreciate higher order cognitive abilities in such a way that you've become biased in such a way and this is unfortunate. of course monte plays w/ feeling

I dig this dude. Mad skills. But he's on auto pilot. Kind of mailing it in. Too damn good no soul. Sorry brother but that's what I'm feeling.
dub2 2 years ago
As a guitarist/songwriter I can appreciate what's happening here. If he were "mailing-in" a song he wrote, I would be concerned. But, in this case...Monte is showing his virtuosity and interpretation of a classic. That I, for one don't want to hear the same way it's been played for the millionth time! He gets a pass, and a cudos from me on this one! And, there is no "best" guitarist...only better! If there were a best, there would be no need for us to play anymore!

His style kind of grows on me but I still prefer MK though undeniably he is a fantastic guitarist.
Wilde4Ever 2 years ago
he's a good guitarist, no doubt about that, but he seems to be flat and lacks feeling (or depth) playing this piece from Mark Knopfler.

MrAnghellic1 2 years ago
Is it still good of you sacrifice rhythm and musicality for calisthenics and pyrotechnics? He's mastered the guitar, but not the music. Less is more here for sure.
mantrop 2 years ago
said like someone who stinks at guitar....
bootryfly 2 years ago
That's not very nice bootryfly, how I play guitar has nothing to do with the fact that the guy loses the groove a handful of times and over plays. Check out Monte at Live From Daryl's House, where you can see some great veterans holding down a great groove...some of Monte's best on line playing.

Careful pick-up placement and amplification set super hot can turn a guitar into a sensitive percussion instrument which only the most delicate touch can render pleasing. When the dynamics of both the instrument and the player are demonstrated in this way it is highly educational too.
