@lindamon8: Ah. I know that as "Bobby Casey's" and played sort of as a slow reel, though many would say it is a hornpipe. Most of the sources put it a third higher (in A Dorian) than I picked it up (in E Dorian), so I'm not sure how helpful me doing a teaching clip of it would be...... I'll bear it in mind. I still haven't done The Monaghan Jig!
Well, o certainly know The Monaghan Jig - grand 4-parter, super whistle/flute tune...... very nice on low D whistle; it's not "in D" though. I'll add it to my "to do" list but it may be a while - I'm up to my ears on other stuff just now, no time for tutorial videos, I'm afraid. I'll get to it eventually.
Just a thought, as this clip seems to be quite popular/folk find it helpful... if anyone wants to suggest other tunes they'd like me to treat similarly & post demo clips of, please message me with your request (not here, please use the direct message function). I can't promise how soon I'd get around to doing it nor that I'd do everything suggested (depends on how many suggestions and whether I already know the tune requested!) but I'll happily consider all requests and do 'em when I can.
cool! thanks for posting this! i normally learn tunes from sheet music cos most of the time these tunes are played too frantically fast to make any sense of XD you must have large hands by the way, you can cover the top three holes with fingertips! oh amd please drop by my channel sometime!
I'd say my hands are medium size. I don't have a huge span from thumb to little finger on piano for example (not that I play it, but for comparison), only a 9th clear over the keys & a 10th round the edge... but they are quite flexible and I have broad finger-tips. I can cover the bottom 3 holes easily too in terms of finger span (cf my flute vids), but the arm-reach away from the body strains the R wrist awkwardly on low whistle...
Great! Do you know where i can find the corresponding sheetmusic for flute? i kept searching and found a few but there are some differences. Yours sounds like the one played by Bothy Band in Out of the Wind.
That's the trouble with trad material! There is no "definitive" version and many settings you may find on the Web have been badly transcribed anyway! Plus players vary the way they play a tune through the repeats. You won't find this material specifically for flute - trad tunes are published with no specific instrument in mind, just any treble-range melody instrument, maybe with chords shown too. Send me your e-address & I'll zap you the dots for Leitrim Fancy that are the bones of my version.
Glad it was helpful/enjoyable. The whistle is by Dave Lymm, uillean piper and guitar maker from Manchester. He only made a few: I saw Mike McGoldrick playing one about 10 years ago, was impressed, tried it, (1st decent low whistle I ever got to play - wouldn't buy Overtons when they were the only thing - never liked 'em, still don't) got contact details and got one.
Cont. The finger tube is a self-made replacement. Made from black electrical conduit tubing, it's still one of the best whistles I've ever played. I made alternate finger tubes for it in Eb, C and Bb too.
Great! How about The Humours of Tullicryne?

...if you keep to the top parts of all three fingers. Hence the "semi-pipers'" approach, not for span but for wrist angle.
