I still remember seeing this just minutes before the finale aired. The 90's may have gone on for a few more months after this, but they truly felt like they were over once MST3K ended.
I truly wish they could all do this show again, but I doubt they all would want to. No clue why they cancelled this, and why no other channel picked it up... Comedy central just has sucky programing now. Both channels are beyond stupid for cancelling it.
And I'll bet now that no other channel will buy rights to air the reruns 'cause they're afraid when their rights expire they'll have to fill the slot with something that cannot compare with this show!
@Herr12 I'd put my money on Mr. B as the current owner and probable MST3K axe man or woman ummm... i think "he" had it in for the show ever since Jack Perkins sexually harassed him at the company party. Not to mention he had the money to buy Sci-Fi back then from all the royalties he got from Conn instruments. Either way I'm sure as hell not a happy king these days!
MST didn't die. It just went into hibernation, and woke up as Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, Incognito Cinema Warriors, Quiptracks, and a slew of iRiffers. SciFi changed their name to SyFy as well as produced movies so bad, they're destined to featured on on of the aforementioned riffing programs. They can barely sustain a rating for any of their shows. I say, the riffers had the last laugh.
The only thing on SyFy (because poor literacy is KEWL) that gets good ratings is their wrestling programs. Y'know, stuff that has nothing to do with science fiction.
I suppose wrestling could have to do with science fiction, but it has to be written that way. And not a lot these days is. As for MTV, yeah. They only run music videos for like 3 hours in the very early morning, just in time for the late shift guys to come home.
@skull902 Assuming you watch wrestling like me. Have you ever seen HUSTLE from Japan? They billed themselves as "Fighting Opera" with a huge sci-fi angle. Including giants with satellite dishes on their heads, gay robots, and laser blasters. Unbelievably fun wrestling.
@skull902 Same here. WWE and TNA haven't interested me in years. I just keep up with results and youtube clips to stay up to date. Hustle closed down in '08 but their stuff is still worth checking out. I'm still trying to figure out a way to do an iRiff on them. They're perfect for it.
@skull902 Same here. WWE and TNA haven't interested me in years. I just keep up with results and youtube clips to stay up to date. Hustle closed down in '08 but their stuff is still worth checking out. I'm still trying to figure out a way to do an iRiff on them. They're perfect for it.
Gee, way to go Sci Fi Channel... making light of the fact that the best thing TV had to offer was getting cancelled. I guess they had to make room for wrestling... naturally on the Sci-Fi Channel! This still makes me ill. Thank GOD for the DVDs, and my very own, home-made Tom Servo.
No matter who hosts it. No matter what channel its on, no matter what movies they feature, it's a part of all of us.
-----------------------
Weird thing about the promo, while it's for the last show in production, the last episode to debut was "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders" (From what I've read anyway)
A nice, warm thanks to the friggin' Sci Fi channel for canceling this gem of a show! Now, all we get are some cheap, sleze-ball Sci Fi original movies! THEY FRIGGIN' SUCK! ''Every tv show gets canceled,'' well, that will soon be you, Sci Fi! THIS SHOW ROCKED!
For the 20th anniversary, Sci-Fi Channel, Best Brains Inc, and Comedy Central should do a special broadcast showcasing 20 years of
MST3K: interviews, the history of MST3K, the B-movies, and also, interviews from the executives at KTMA (now WUCW), Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel. Ratings will go through the roof, and they'll start airing re-runs of MST3K Mondays-Fridays 3-5 PM. I think this will help the broadcasts for Thanksgiving 2008. What do you think?
They should bring back MST3K to make fun of all the shitty movies the sci-fi channel produces... hopefully they are geniuses and that has been their plan all along
Yeah, bravo Sci-Fi Channel, cancelling the greatest tv show on earth for make loads of shit like that movie of a Mosquito Man, and the other, The Attack of the Stock Footage Bears. Who owns the network? Sandy Frank? Mr B Natural? Ortega? If you are reading Sci Fi execs: Burn in the deepest pit of Hell.
I'd just like to say a big, hearty "Thank You" to SciFi Channel for cancelling the best show in television history and replacing it with crap like "Pterodactyl" and "Attack of the Sabertooth". (Yeah, I know they have Battlestar Galactica too, but that doesn't begin to make up for their atrocity.)
While I've always loved MST3K and would watch it today if it were still on, I think it was coming to its end when it was canceled. With DVDs getting big and every DVD having commentary, MST3K wasn't really as unique as it once was.
Also, the show was never really as successful as most networks would want it to be. Yeah it had a cult following, but I've known people who refused to watch it because of its premise/basis. Of course, those same people ended up loving the show after seeing it.
Ratings were always very good on Comedy Central and Sci-Fi but the show also needed execs with the patience for complicated rights negotiations with third parties. It was a bona-fide hit when it was cancelled. A typical souless exec would say 'why run a show with great ratings but with all that hassle when we could make our own really bad movies that we would own free and clear?' The fact that we nevertheless did get 10 seasons of MST3K shows that there is good in the world. Long live MST3K!
I think I read it was a decision made by the network, something about how single episodes were too long and the network could fit 3 half hour shows into the slot for one MST3K episode.
Of course! Sci-fi channel makes these "final episode" promos as soon as they sign a show--any show. The probably make them for shows they'll never even run.
I'm fairly new to mst3k and i gotta say that I'm A HUGE FAN of this show!!!! The Mike Nelson era was the funniest ever and now thanks to You Tube I'm Addicted to the show. An Addiction I wouln't mind if it catches on!!
most mstie-newbs have usually only seen the Nelson seasons, Joel and Mike are one of the most argued in the world on who was better, i believe that joel was a better host, but mike is a better writer and comedian, thus why he moved on to rifftrax but Joel was some great ones too, check out manos
The fact that MST3K is still relevant and brilliantly funny is testament to the fact that the Sci-Fi Channel totally f*cked up here and no one was smart enough to bring the franchise back. But then, maybe I shouldn't wish for its resurrection, after not being able to find Family Guy funny anymore.
The only Sci-Fi episode I ever got to see when MST3K wasn't relegated to early Saturday mornings was "Agent For H.A.R.M.", because I didn't get Sci-Fi until after the last episode was aired. The last time I saw Agent was during a marathon (also the only time I got to see "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies"). Luckily, I taped as many of the episodes as I could.
It's strange. I only remember watching MST3K from it's... Comedy Central days. Then stumbling upon finding it on Sci Fi. Was 10...11, 12 then? Now 21, i'm a greater fan of MST! So SciFi was straightforwardly blunt...
It's nothing to be sad about. It's a glorious end to a magnificent show. It will never truly die until the last MSTie bites the dust. And judging from how it's popularity has gone on to the next generation, that won't be for a long time. Rock on MST3K, rock on.
I wish I would have had cable at that time. Just so that I could have had my soul crushed and been force to face the harsh reality that is life at a slightly younger age.
Let's see...When did all that is good in the world suddenly dissapear and life as we know it would forever be without merriment and mirth?...Yeah, it's been about 7 years now.
I still remember seeing this just minutes before the finale aired. The 90's may have gone on for a few more months after this, but they truly felt like they were over once MST3K ended.
