  • mfw my taskbar on my windows machine is exatly like yours(exept i have mine set on autohide)... i always have tons of windows open and i also have mine docked onto the left side of the screen. i'd bet in your chrome browser you have tons of taps open like i do too...

  • @zedomax Thank you very much! That's extremely kind of you!

  • @itsanameisntit will this work on motorola atrix using the darkside rom v4.4?

  • @DarkEmoE Sorry, but you're asking the wrong guy. This is my first Android. You may want to post in the main comments section. Good luck!

  • I'm not able to get apt-get update to work for some odd reason

  • I got everything working, but I had to upgrade from Karmic to Lucid because Karmic is no longer supported. So apt-get update and apt-get install OpenSSH would not work. (404 error)

The problem is, upon upgrading to Lucid, it tells me that I do not have enough disk space, even though my phone has over 15gb free.

How can I increase the space for ubuntu? im assuming its like a virtual space almost like a partition within my sd card. But I need to increase that space somehow?

    Please help!

  • Never mind flashing the kernel on your HTC, I just got arrested for flashing the Colonel in my local KFC.

  • It seems as though everything works, until updates and installs...

    apt-get update don't work anymore

apt-get instal openssh dont work anymore

    etc...

They are all trying to fetch old files that don't exist anymore. According to my web searches, this happens with the version of linux is old and no longer supported.

Looks like somebody has to make a new ubuntu.zip for us to use....

Damnit, this blows. I really wanted to run this.

  • Sorry, my English is bad. I could not understand what you said. I wanted to know, Ubuntu is running on the smartphone, right? VNC does not seek to another computer, just brings up a screen that Ubuntu is running with the correct resolution. Right? Another little question, you do not know if by chance I did this on my Acer Iconia A500 Tab Ubuntu could use the USB Host? I'm from Brazil.

  • I have ubuntu installed, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet to update. Are there ports I have to open? ifconfig says I'm connected...

  • Ok, I can get to the "get-apt update" part, but it tells me that it can't download. Any help? I'm trying this on LG optimus C btw

  • Hello I was just wondering exactly how much of the hardware does Ubuntu have access to? Does it have full 3D axcelleration?

  • Hi, does USB hci works? If so and could drive an external hdd, would be pretty cool to have it as a wireless home media centre on a docking :P

  • @makaroka might be able to, I havent dug that far yet.

  • it wont let me install openssh... it says failed to fetchports.ubunto.c 0 m/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/o/opensshh/openssh-server_5.1p1-6ubuntu2_armel.deb PLEASE HELP

  • Will this void the warranty?

  • @FieldxMarshal not this but rooting ur phone but u can always unroot your phone so...

  • Can you use the phone's front camera within ubuntu's webcam applications? real cool nonetheless.

  • using vnc is a nice touch!

  • i've been using android for about a week or two & i've got a txt mode root prompt @ an ubuntu host which is running in a chroot environment... i try to startx & i get errors.. is vnc necessary? makes some sense considering there is already an x server running for android .. i'm not an ubuntu user i go w/ enterprise style linux as it seems far, far more stable. I'm also curious how well gtk-3 will run on this 1GHZ LG Revolution

  • Do you know if it would be possible to run the latest version of Ubuntu on android devices?

  • i keep getting ....

chroot: cant execute '/bin/bash' : No such file or directory

    shutting down ubuntu

    failed

losetup: /dev/block/loop1 : device or resource busy

  • I need help!

Im trying this on my G2 with Cyanogenmod 7. I get a bunch of errors, such as:

    "modprobe: module 'ext2' not found"

    "chmod: fsrw: Operation not permitted"

    "chmod: mountonly: Operation not permitted"

    "chmod: ubuntu.img: Operation not permitted"

    "chmod: ubuntu.sh: Operation not permitted"

    "chmod: unionfs: Operation not permitted"

What do I do? I followed your instruction exactly as you said them, and even double checked on your website. I even changed the loop to loop299, didn't fix it.

  • @supermario12312 You have to install busybox!

  • @zedomax I was pretty sure I already had Busybox, as typing cp gave me the version that was installed, but just to be sure, I downloaded Busybox installer from the market, installed the latest version, and tried it again. It still didn't work. And now whoami gives me "unknown uid 0", where before it said "root". The shell is still root, though, as I have the # sign. What should I try next?

  • @supermario12312 try just chmod do you still get busybox syntax?

  • question.. does Bluetooth/WIFI work within the Ubuntu or does it not have the ability to do that??

  • @BloodshedRomance wifi works within ubuntu obviously since I can browse internet, you can make bluetooth work too although I haven't tried it, might have to edit the script a bit.

  • HEY YOU SHOULD TRY AND GET IOS ON ANDROID DEVICES!! THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!

  • connection refused for vnc server :<

  • Would this work on a tablet? I have an Acer a500

  • Is there a way to add ubuntu on the motorola droid x

  • How do you ensure it is not running? I dont want it running in the background

  • Wow, amazing! got it working on my motorola atrix, the VNC client isnt very good though, I get a much better connection when connecting with my computer.

    Thanks for the video

  • does the same work on LG GT 540 andorid? thanks!

  • Err so you are running graphical environment as root and running totally unprotected ssh server. Those are the basic things you don't do on unix-like operatingsystem. Yes I know that it's just a chroot on a phone but I seriously hope that you take better care of your servers. :p

  • You installed LXDE but when you "login" to ubuntu you have GNOME...

    Why is that??

PS. Nice VM running on your pc :p

  • Se podra en mi galaxy ace

  • linux is amazing..

  • try CrunchBang

  • if u can still do this could u see if u can run a minecraft server off of it. PLEASE if u need help its really easy so i can help ya.

  • Whenever i succesfully VNC into my localhost ubuntu... everything works (minus correct key inputs) but when i exit VNC o noticed my mass storage wouldnt work until i rebooted my phone, after rebooting my phone, i could not get vnc to connect again, and this was beause when i went into terminal to start ubuntu, it would create a new localhost1, localhost2 and so on. so i could only use ubuntu once unless i recopied all the files over and redid the whole process... did you not that this problem?

  • Could you run wine?

  • hmmm I actually make kubuntu (not sure about ubuntu with Gnome but shall do the same process) to boot from my android device just with a simple boot loader (withoug GUI -> because there drops if any) and it runs as fast as the android os with slap, installed on ext4 and so .. and all this with 200mb ram and 20 free on my root drive (which is the most part of the android os / if anything bad happens with the ubuntu). So WHAT's the point of this type of connection that you show here ? I can't get

  • what is chroot

  • @SweetoBoyee chroot allows you to run other linux distros on top of another linux os, android is actually linux so thats why you can run other distros with chroot such as ubuntu here.

  • @zedomax if you dont have loopback device support can you not use chroot?

  • dont you need a loopback device supporting kernel? anyone know of that for the thunderbolt?

  • @SweetoBoyee I'm running Gingeritis 3D v1.0 Beta VI with the stock kernel that comes with the ROM and I was able to boot Ubuntu successfully using the provided instructions. Like zedomax says in the video, most custom ROMs support loopback

  • @mwheele2 downloading. thanks for the insight

  • so basically you have to be connected to your PC in order to run ubuntu ? its not running from the phone? if that's the case then what is the use? your better of using your pc when your at home...

  • @PhAsR It's the IP address you're hooking up to. You can switch to mobile when you need to. I'm not quite sure why it's required, but of course Internet doesn't require existance constantly, probably only on each boot.

  • could u put it straight onto ur phone via usb?

  • @sjarvis515 Yes you can you mean the files?

  • i get the $ too but ik for a fact its rooted

  • dose it support java

  • ok so if i want to get rid of it all what should i do??

  • hey quick question what class is ur MCSD card because i have a class 4 and it took maybe twice the time to transfer the ubuntu folder over to the sd card then yours did??

  • Hey after doing everything and going into android vnc viewer and connecting to 127.0.0.1:5901 it comes up with an all gray screen and an error message what does that mean? cant get it to work!

  • @zedomax please tell me hoe to do this: In VNC’s xstartup file: $HOME/.vnc/xstartup

You have to add the line export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1 before

/etc/X11/Xsession or gnome-session (in case you use GNOME)

  • I got all to work BUT KEYBORAD IS F***KD UP. please anyone who managed to fix this, answer me, I would be so happy! :)

  • Do you think I can put in DSL or Puppy Linux?

PLEASE RESPOND NONE OF THE OTHERS DO!

  • @wasitrealy Might be able to, will look into it as I am thinking about other distros too.

  • "Thanks to you all fool...eh...folks" xDDDD

And that's rly cool also you explained it GREAT !! (and simple).

I'm still thinking will I make it to my phone xD Probably YES if I get 2 GB xD on SD but I should delete :X

  • The tutorial was great! But you should like outline what you are going to read, using the word "UM" in your speaking is one of the most irritating for me lol. I only ask because I plan to use your tutorials often =P thanks again!

  • I got this to work but after i rebooted and tryed to connect via VNC, it said the port werent accepting connections, so i went into terminal ant typed

    "su"

    "bootubuntu"

then all the commands went through like a charm but i noticed it said there was already a localhost... and when i tryed to connect it was still a no go... if i run the command again

    "bootubuntu"

it just made another localhost3.... so how do i restart this correctly whenever i wanna run ubuntu through vnc?

  • Works like a charm. Thanks for the great tutorial!! Galaxy tab 7" (AT&T)

  • @dharmin007 Keyboard doesn't work though

  • cant wait to try on my prevail

  • Plz help me man plzzzzzz

  • When i run apt-get update it says can’t resolve ‘ports.ubuntu.com’ plus when i try to connect to androidvnc it says connection refused.

I have internet because i’m connected through wi-fi to my router and i tried this connected to other router as well with the same results. Anyone knows how to fix this? Galaxy S xxjvp 2.3.4 speedmod T5 kernel.

  • giid ibe ;D did work i subbed D:!

  • also can this be uninstalled?

  • @SweetoBoyee yes, just reboot and erase the ubuntu folder and its like nothin happened.

  • i think i need to use droid explorers adb because i cant use cmd because when i open it it opens my user instead of the c drive

  • Use GingerBreak to root. Look up GingerBreak.apk on Google. Drag to SD Card, use ASTRO or EasyInstaller to install. Pull up GingerBreak and Select root. That's how to root! :)

  • Will this work on the Samsung transform?

  • @2dumb2care DSL is a bit outdated and stagnant but Tiny Core Linux is pretty good (and smaller)

  • You should do this with DSL since its super small

  • @zedomax but when i have superuser on my phone isn't it already rootet?

  • please help me. i get a "$" instead of a "#" when i typed "su". And after a few seconds it says "permission denied" what can i do?

  • @sukoremi That means your Android device isn't rooted, plz root it first!

  • @sukoremi I have the same problem but I know that I'm rooted. I used root checker and it says that I'm definetly rooted.

  • Its better and esier to install ubuntu on your pc... get ultra vnc and android vnc to use ubuntu on your android phone...All you need is wi-fi!

  • hang on isn't this just VNC??? Do you have to have ubuntu on your pc in order to use this? I was rather hoping it to be a standalone OS on my phone.

  • Hi, i have managed to get this working on my Incredible S...works really well, i was just wondering how to shut it down...i try via putty and terminal on the phone but it still seems to be running when i connect with VNC

  • Im on CM7 (Galaxy S) and it just wont find any drivers

  • Do you think this would work on a Ndivia tegra 2 tablet with android 3.0? Such a tablet would give ubuntu lightning fast performance and a larger/higher resolution screen to work with.

PS: Success on my 800MHz with 256mb of RAM Samsung Transform. Has the very minimum RAM requirements for ubuntu and runs very slow. Using LXDE or IceWM as opposed to GNOME but it makes no difference in performance.

  • This + laptop dock = no need for my macbook anymore :D

  • Hi! i got it working on my vibrant, i used CM7 because it has loop devices enabled and i did pretty much everything from the terminal emulator instead of on the desktop because sdk wouldn't recognize my phone. Pretty much from where you started using CMD i used terminal emulator instead. which is great! I have a problem tho, i used the resolution designated for my phone, but i switched the dimentions and now it looks really weird on my phone, do you know how i can change the rez? thanks!

  • Is this possible on my alcatel 980 with android 2.1 ???

  • Does it work with the Motorola Milestone?

  • LOL, I always wondered how to handle the GUI, I'm glad the solution were VNC, pretty clever... now, do you think it will work in Samsung Galaxy variants (I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace, It has a decent proccessor)...

  • I keep getting device or resource busy when I type bootubuntu. I even tried different loop nodes. my g2 is rooted and on stock kernel. any ideas as to how to fix this?

  • Do you think this will be possible on a Samsung Galaxy s2?? I've heard rooting it is quite simple and it should have an unlocked bootloader...

  • @qwattash Should work once u root it!

  • @zedomax Great! I'll tell you as soon as I get the device! However you did a great job with this tutorial!! thank you, man!

  • Does it need the stock kernel to run? I have huawei u8800 and i got overclocked kernel (1,056GHz) or do I need to put the original kernel back?

  • @HAILborgir No, you just need a kernel that supports loopback devices, most aftermarket ROMs do.

  • I would like to understend more about how it works, not how it is done. I mean, where is the ubuntu, virtual drive or what? And how do I remove it? Can I stop it, so it does not eat out my battery? There is somewhere we can discuss about this?

  • i dont understend. top command gives the process running by android?

  • someone should get windows xp to run on a android tablet

also will this work on a ubuntu tablet.

it has 512mb of ram and a 1ghz processor

  • someone should get windows xp to run on a android tablet

  • I only have a 2GB SD card :(

  • Is it possible to get this working with the HDMI out port? have a Dell Streak.

  • @GodoPPL Yes, if u have full mirroing on Dell Streak, not sure...

  • @zedomax u know what is the best device to do this?

the motorola atrix with it desktop app

  • will it void your warranty like rooting it

  • @bnichs51259 I could if you could loan me ur phone around SF bay area california.

  • on samsung galaxy ace?

  • Hey, iv'e followed all the directions, but when I connect to my VNC server it shows up black and white lines going diagnal. I did everything from Terminal emulator, can you help my problem?

  • can you do this from a terminal on your phone?

  • @imtifade yes, same thing as adb shell.

  • thanks for the instructions , got it to work on my evo. where can i find the code for the keyboard mapping?

  • Do you know if this works on the HTC Desire sim free UK/EUR version?

  • @ruhelahmed1 Yes, it does.

  • And in adb shell it shows $ instead of #

  • BTW I rooted my phone

  • Tried it on samsung galaxy s everything worked fine until i tried to enter super user mode by typing "su".

It gave me the following message "permission denied"

    Any solution?
