I can't say what is going on in Jack white's mind but he respects the roots of music and he is a big fan of Beefheart, I think it's more of a tribute and pointing the way for his fans that don't know Beefheart to go check him out. What really breaks my heart/makes me wonder if people have F'in ears though, are the comments that say White's versions are better. Ouch! The Tom Waits Mule Variations I found to be the bad version of copying...

Jack didn't even own any expensive guitars at the time of this recording, it is more than likely being played on his old Kay or Harmony which was sold at sears. I am willing to bet the gear they were using to record is way more valuable than his guitar, and still not as good as all the crazy digital shit we have to use now a days. If anything it sounds eclectic because of the mic being used, Jack has one hell of a collection of mics.
