... or they could just rewrite the simulations and run them on GPU rigs as they are much better for stream processing with an AMD/ATI GPU containing as much as 1600 cores, all one needs is a decent overclock and memory to suit. Granted, FPUs are probably not on the menu, but simulations on a FirePRO will probably be more efficient than ones on 10 Phenom II hexes or even Opterons. That's my opinion and I'll stand by GPUs for a long long time when it comes to these things.
using 15000 cores in a room does not make sense to me , i believe seti@home project is much more interesting because the project uses the members computers cpu power for calculations whenever the computer is idle, so it can exceed 15,000 users (and cpu's) easily.. I believe the computer is huge but not practical to use, lots of radiation would occur.
i never had 15000 cpu's nor 15000 desktop PC's to experience that kind of performance.. so i will keep swimming in smaller lakes with my pentium IV 2.4 :-)
just thought I'd update people, The latest (fastest) supercomputer is the new Jaguar model (And it uses AMD CPUs!) and just for you who want to know, I heard that it could play crysis at upto 65fps!! :P
Roadrunner is the number one supper computer today, which can mimic human cognitve functions. It was tested using "Petavision". Still, human brian is the mother of all supper computers.
None. Cause you can't build exactly this shit with Core2. Intel lack the i/o technology until Core3 debuts. Core2 lives on their cache. Great for running anandtech's selection of desktop benchmarks but that's not what this computer is intended for.
You can build a supercomputer with Intel. But it will have to be a different architecture. And it won't be anywhere as good. Until Core3, that is.
Ranger has computational power of over 500 Teraflop, 504 Teraflops to be exact, which makes it the most power super computer today, twice tthe power of the fastest Blue gene/l which is around 250Tflops. With half a petaflop of computational power it indeed has opened the doors to era of petascale computing. Kudos
um no there useing Quadro fx those have 1-5 gpus in side one machine The new quadro Fx are use for Weather and high time loading like few hours of showing high powered videos, but the quadro will such on games there not for preformance their for graphics, artecuclar
AMD's Multi-Processor platforms (especially the 4S ones) are much faster than an equivalent Xeon based server. Due to the multiple memory controllers on each board the memory bandwidth is significantly higher than Intel's (which has the memory controller built into the north bridge.
And then new Phenom processors have HT3.0 so the data transfer between processors beat down Intel's fastest FSB (1600MHz).

Is there anyway to play game on one of these supercomputers?

Bet you that would be a HELL of a gaming pc : D

Hopefully in the future AMD will release a type of motherboard that will support two processors. That would be very nice.

I think that's already been done mate

Trust me, this is far more powerful than 15000 desktops...
It allows large scale, real time computing - the seti/FAH model does not allow this.

lol, check out some of trubritar(channel name)s crysis benchmarks. full graphics settings one of his computers got in the 80s range for fps!

Fun but it's not designed for games. Games are not designed for supercomputers. You should say, it could run crysis 15000 times simultanious :P

will this run Sims2 at maximum setting?

I wonder how much power they'd save if they switched to 45nm core 2 duos. 10 watts idle, 54 watts full load (check anandtech for details)
